Any particular reason why diamonds are recommended for gear socketing as opposed to rubies for an intelligence based class?

well, #1, rubies are for Str. hehe, obviously you meant topaz, of course.

since it's a zero-dps "support" build, it doesn't need the +int to improve dps, so the diamonds are taken for Resist All to improve survival.

Actually, I meant rubies. For high end content, armor is very valuable to Necromancers, and I've seen other intelligence based classes socket them as well. 

Resists for int classes are already very high, which is why non resist affixes are desired on their gear (barring certain exceptions)

You can run Rubies or Diamonds depending on your armour level and what secondaries you have. If you go for globe secondaries to help your barb, run Diamonds. If you go for normal secondaries, run Rubies and make sure you run Stand Alone, since it buffs the ruby contribution too.

It's also worth noting that Diamonds are worth more the faster your group is. If you can reliably beat your rift with your group in sub 3-minutes, run Diamonds. If you're slower than that, run a lower rift or run with Rubies. This is because the value of the armor falls as your %-uptime per mob of the LoTD freeze increases. If your group has high enough DPS, you'll basically never take melee damage, but affixes/ranged elemental damage can still hit you, meaning diamonds become more useful.

As usual, thanks for the build guide!  Was planning on using a 2 man team (both necros) with one being the zDPS...can we substitute nemesis bracer instead of strong arm?

You can but if you do, remember that you render the Halcyon's AscentHalcyon's Ascent useless so pick something else in it's place like a bonus passive perhaps from a Hellfire Amulet of IntelligenceHellfire Amulet of Intelligence

Most items are interchangable but you swap damage for speed obviously. 25% damage vs. more elitepacks so I would say the Nemesis BracersNemesis Bracers route is no problem at all for farming and medium GRs but for the 100+GRs you'll want to swap back for the extra 25% damage.

I don't get the eternal torment passive skill here. if   you're going to have an aura curse everyone around you that cost nothing and last for 30 seconds, then your going to have a passive skill that makes your curse that costs nothing cost 50% less of nothing which I believe is nothing still then it lasts forever which I'm pretty sure in diablo III 30 sec is forever. it doesn't make any sense to have a passive skill that  is useless. maybe this passive would be good if you had another curse passive or another curse but here useless

Notice: cube leroic crown (gets you perfect roll on afix)
Use pestilence head, RRG gives you 4th set bonus, results in a net 50% dmg reduction. same as the aquila you "lose"

Main advantage is the 100% roll on the crown afixe

Compensating for your scouting role in groups and the distance you create to your party at times, Eternal TormentEternal Torment ensures permanence of the FrailtyFrailty affliction on enemies you've passed through once.

This is an old post so hopefully someone sees it but what about using simulacrum for the 3 curses skill and make your aura hit all 3 curses on each mob while simulacrum is active.. you can definitely get more out of the permanent curse passive? You will have to remove a skill so poison or lance.

 

BTW.. just came back to D3 but was a decent ladder back when I played, D2 and D1 as well. Sorry if this is a dumb idea but sounds good on paper. I’d test this but I’ll need to gear up.
