Game Director Alan Dabiri Leaves Heroes Team

Alan Dabiri announced that he's leaving his current position as Game Director for Heroes of the Storm and he's moving on to another project at Blizzard.

Alan Dabiri has been Game Director ever since Dustin Browder stepped down in December 2016. He thinks the game is in the right hands right now, as developers continue to deliver interesting new Heroes and events. He's transitioning to a new team within the company. We wish him success in all his future endeavors.

In my 20-plus years at Blizzard, I’ve had the privilege of working on many awesome Blizzard games in roles ranging from software engineer to technical director to game director. Across my many roles and games, my experience working on Heroes of the Storm ranks among the best of my development career. I’ve witnessed Heroes’ evolution from a StarCraft II mod to the amazing game you see today. Heroes’ development has been fueled by the shared excitement of our team and all of you in the community, and the game we’ve built together is the game I play almost every night.

One of the best things about developing Heroes is the fact that this team is not afraid to try new things while always striving to learn and grow. It’s been part of our DNA from the very beginning, and it’s through years of experimentation that we’ve hit our stride both as a development team, and as a game. This is possible because Heroes has an exceptional development team of both Blizzard veterans and fresh faces who are all highly engaged with the game we’re making, and the players we’re making it for.

It’s in this spirit of trying new things that I want to let everyone know that a few months ago, I accepted an opportunity to transition off my role as Heroes’ game director to heed Blizzard’s call and begin a new adventure elsewhere within the company. The game director has always been one part of the overall leadership team that drives Heroes forward and it’s been a privilege to work among some of the best game developers at every level on the team all the way up to our production director, Kaéo Milker. Leaving a team and game that I love is incredibly difficult, but seeing the steady strength, creativity, and commitment that Kaéo and the design, engineering, and art leadership teams consistently bring to Heroes has given me more than enough confidence to make this decision. I trust that the game is in the very best hands and their work these past few months has only reinforced my belief.

They’ve released awesome new heroes like Yrel, Whitemane, Mephisto, and now Mal’Ganis, while building on the themed content drops that let the team do fun things that only Heroes can do. They brought the smackdown (plus my favorite mount, the Luchihuahua!) with Nexomania, finally brought an epic slice of Azeroth into the Nexus with the Alterac Pass Battleground, and joined the Raven Lord’s forces with the Fall of King’s Crest. On top of that, the team has also released awesome reworks like Raynor and Brightwing while adding exciting updates like third ban and Team League improvements. With so many awesome content and feature updates, you can see why I believe that the team has brought us the best year of Heroes of the Storm so far.

And they’re not done yet. Heroes has one of the most passionate and dedicated development teams I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and they have a ton of exciting new content in development. I can’t wait for you all to see what they have in store for the rest of this year and beyond. You can bet that I’ll be right there enjoying it with you as it’s released, too. I’m sure you’ll agree when I say that Heroes is in a great place and I promise that it’s in the hands of the best possible people to continue driving it forward. Kaéo and the Heroes team are people who play almost every night who also happen to get to work on making the game what it is today. With our continued input and support, they’ll keep doing what they do best by making Heroes of the Storm the most awesome game it can possibly be.

I just want to sign off by saying thank you to all of you. I’ve had an incredible time working on this game and seeing you bring the battlegrounds to life every day. I’m so grateful for the enthusiasm you’ve brought to Heroes and all the changes you’ve encouraged us to make. I think the games made a lot of headway since he took over.

With the exception of loot crates...oh jesus who am I kidding, I'm addicted to those things too.  They're effing poison.

He already left like 2 days ago. Probably moved to new Diablo, like some of other HotS/WoW/Diablo 3 people in recent years.

As far as mobas go this one is probably the bottom of the list for me. And if they cant even recognize it came from dota in wc3 thats pretty crappy. They even had a minor legal battle over it...

hots is actually one of the best mobas out there

 

i recently played lol again, and holy fuck is it boring

 

10 mins of braindead lasthiting and trying to gank, vs teamfights from min 2 on

hots just doesnt appeal to other moba players, cause they cant get fed and 1v5 the enemy team cause they are op if they have t lane against a weak opponent

I am not hating, I played a lot of HotS (200+ hours at least) until this Dabiri guy took over. What did we get after that? Faster reconnects, better balancing, better matchmaking? Hell no. We got lootboxes, nerf of stealth heroes, and no love for older heroes in general.

yeah thats true, all other games are in their worst state atm ...

bfa feels like legion 0.5 if not worse

ow has balancing issues all over the place and with so much stuns and oneshots just not fun to play

hearthstone has a balanced meta but like ow, is just not fun when 50% of the decks are otk ...

 

but heroes is just enjoyable atm, sure it has his flaws but it seems it gets better every patch 

the hero/teamleage changes are bs, but the hero design of the last heroes is just too good

I’ve plenty playing HOTS for over a year and I’ve really come to enjoy it as a social thing in casual play more than I did playing WoW PVP.

I tried watching an arena stream of WoW and could not get over the string/chains of CC, silence, interrrupt, blind etc.  I mean I remember it, I was good at it but wow did it just look so boring, so uninteresting and so CD/global timing as opposed to fun.

Say what you want about team fight combos but it takes a lot more than a macro to win one.

      Death Coil [Q] Mana: 40. Cooldown: 9 seconds. Deals 164 damage to target enemy. Can be self-cast to heal for 262 Health. Howling Blast [W] Mana: 50. Cooldown: 10 seconds. Root enemies within the target area for 1.25 seconds and deals 68 damage. Frozen Tempest [E] Mana: 13 per second. Cooldown: 1 second. Deals 36 damage per second to nearby enemies and Slow their Movement Speed by 10% per second, stacking up to 40%. Heroes hit also have their Attack Speed Slowed by 10% per second, stacking up to 40%. Frozen Tempest's effects last for 1.5 seconds. Army of the Dead [R] Charge Cooldown: 18 seconds. Consume all charges to summon an equal number of Ghouls that last 15 seconds and attack for 20 damage. Ghouls can be sacrificed to heal Arthas for 240 Health. Stores up to 6 charges. Every time an enemy minion dies nearby, reduce the charge cooldown of this ability by 1 second. PASSIVE: Each stack of Frostmourne Hungers increases Arthas' Maximum Health by 10. Icebound Fortitude Cooldown: 35 seconds. Activate to gain 25 Armor and reduce the duration of Stuns, Slows, and Roots against Arthas by 75% for 3 seconds. Each Hero Rooted by Howling Blast reduces the cooldown of this ability by 2 seconds. Level 13 Deathlord If Death Coil is used on an enemy Hero, launch an additional Death Coil at a nearby enemy Hero. PASSIVE: Death Coil deals more damage the lower Arthas' current Health is, to a maximum of 50% bonus damage. Deathchill Howling Blast's damage is increased by 2 for each stack of Frostmourne Hungers. Biting Cold Each second an enemy is damaged by Frozen Tempest, it deals 15% bonus damage, up to 75% bonus damage. Level 16 Remorseless Winter Enemy Heroes that remain within Frozen Tempest for 2.5 seconds are Rooted for 1.25 seconds and heal Arthas for 3% of his maximum Health. This effect has an 8 second cooldown per target. Frostmourne Feeds Reduce the cooldown of Frostmourne Hungers by 6 seconds. Arthas heals for 75% of the Basic Attack damage dealt by Frostmourne Hungers. Anti-Magic Shell Cooldown 60 seconds. Activate to make Arthas immune to Spell Damage for 4 seconds and heal Arthas for 25% of the damage prevented. Level 20 Legion of Northrend Reduce Army of the Dead's charge cooldown by 5 seconds. Each charge consumed spawns an additional Ghoul to attack nearby enemies. These Ghouls cannot be sacrificed. Absolute Zero Sindragosa flies twice as far.       Garden of Terror Classic The original Garden of Terror has returned to Custom Games! The name has been changed to Garden of Terror Classic to differentiate from the current Garden of Terror. Haunted Mines Haunted mines has returned to Quick Match! Map objective is now complete when one team collects 55 Skulls, rather than when all 100 Skulls have been collected. Hero vision is reduced while in the mines. Warhead Junction Cast time for Nuke increased from 2.5 seconds to 3 seconds. Cast time for Nuke now breaks upon taking damage. DoT damage from Nuke increased by 100%. Damage to Forts and Keeps from Nuke increased from 100% to 125%. Return to Top

      Arthas has been fully reworked! All abilities and talents will be listed below.
      Base
      Death Coil [Q] Mana: 40. Cooldown: 9 seconds. Deals 164 damage to target enemy. Can be self-cast to heal for 262 health. Howling Blast [W] Mana: 50. Cooldown: 10 seconds. Root enemies within the target area for 1.25 seconds and deals 68 damage. Frozen Tempest [E] Mana: 13 per second. Cooldown: 1 second. Deals 36 damage per second to nearby enemies and Slow their Movement Speed by 10% per second, stacking up to 40%. Heroes hit also have their Attack Speed Slowed by 10% per second, stacking up to 40%. Frozen Tempest's effects last for 1.5 seconds. Army of the Dead [R] Charge Cooldown: 18 seconds. Consume all charges to summon an equal number of Ghouls that last 15 seconds and attack for 20 damage. Ghouls can be sacrificed to heal Arthas for 240 Health. Stores up to 6 charges. Every time an enemy minion dies nearby, reduce the charge cooldown of this ability by 1 second. Takedowns reduce the charge cooldown of this ability by 6 seconds. Summon Sindragosa [R] Mana: 100. Cooldown: 100 seconds. Deals 230 damage and Slows enemies by 60% for 4 seconds. Also disables Minions, Mercenaries, Monsters, and Structures for 20 seconds. Frostmourne Hungers [D] Cooldown: 12 seconds. Activate to make Arthas' next Basic Attack strike immediately and deal 71 bonus damage. Dealing damage restores 40 Mana. QUEST: Killing a Minion or hitting a Hero with Frostmourne Hungers permanently increases its bonus damage and Arthas' Basic Attack damage by 1. Talents
      Level 1 Frost Presence Increase the area of Howling Blast by 20%. QUEST: Root enemy Heroes with Howling Blast. REWARD: After Rooting 15 Heroes, Howling Blast's range is increased by 20% and it hits enemies in its path. REWARD: After Rooting 30 Heroes, Death Coil Slows Heroes hit by 50% for 0.75 seconds. Borean Winds After Frozen Tempest has been active for 2 seconds, Arthas gains 10% Movement Speed. PASSIVE: Frozen Tempest's Slowing effects last an additional 0.5 seconds and its Mana cost is reduced by 4 per second. Rime Every 5 seconds, gain 75 Physical Armor against the next enemy Hero Basic Attack, reducing the damage taken by 75%. Stores up to 3 charges. PASSIVE: While Arthas is Slowed, Rooted, or Stunned he heals 24 Health a second. Level 4 Shattered Armor Enemy Heroes hit by Howling Blast have their Armor reduced by 15 for 4 seconds. Icy Talons Gain 3% Attack Speed for 2 seconds every time a Hero is damaged by Frozen Tempest, to a maximum of 60%. Frost Strike Frostmourne Hungers deals an additional 115 Ability damage in an area and slows Heroes hit by 20% for 2 seconds. Level 7 Immortal Coil Gain the healing effect of Death Coil even when used on enemies. If Death Coil is used on Arthas, it heals for an additional 75% bonus healing and its cooldown is reduced by 3 seconds. Rune Tap Every 3rd Basic Attack heals Arthas for 5% of his max Health. PASSIVE: Each stack of Frostmourne Hungers increases Arthas' Maximum Health by 10. Icebound Fortitude Cooldown: 35 seconds. Activate to gain 25 Armor and reduce the duration of Stuns, Slows, and Roots against Arthas by 75% for 3 seconds. Each Hero Rooted by Howling Blast reduces the cooldown of this ability by 2 seconds. Level 13 Deathlord If Death Coil is used on an enemy Hero, launch an additional Death Coil at a nearby enemy Hero. PASSIVE: Death Coil deals more damage the lower Arthas' current Health is, to a maximum of 50% bonus damage. Deathchill Howling Blast's damage is increased by 2 for each stack of Frostmourne Hungers. Howling Blast deals 100% additional damage and Roots for an additional 0.25 seconds against Heroes under 50% health. Biting Cold Each second an enemy is damaged by Frozen Tempest, it deals 15% bonus damage, up to 75% bonus damage. Level 16 Remorseless Winter Enemy Heroes that remain within Frozen Tempest for 2.5 seconds are Rooted for 1.25 seconds and heal Arthas for 3% of his maximum Health. This effect has an 8 second cooldown per target. Frostmourne Feeds Reduce the cooldown of Frostmourne Hungers by 6 seconds. Arthas heals for 75% of the Basic Attack damage dealt by Frostmourne Hungers. Anti-Magic Shell Cooldown 60 seconds. Activate to make Arthas immune to Spell Damage for 4 seconds and heal Arthas for 25% of the damage prevented. Level 20 Legion of Northrend Reduce Army of the Dead's charge cooldown by 5 seconds. Each charge consumed spawns an additional Ghoul to attack nearby enemies. These Ghouls cannot be sacrificed. Absolute Zero Sindragosa flies twice as far. Enemy Heroes are Rooted for 2.5 seconds, and then Slowed by 60% for 4 seconds. Death Pact Instantly double your stacks of Frostmourne Hungers, but it no longer gains stacks from hitting Heroes or killing Minions. PASSIVE: Takedowns grant 2 stacks of Frostmourne Hungers. Path of Frost Activate to instantly mount with 10% additional Movement Speed. Taking damage does not dismount Arthas from this mount. Lasts up to 5 seconds. When Arthas dismounts, Slow all nearby enemies by 30% for 2 seconds and deal 66 damage. Chen

Upon reaching 40 stacks, Fel Claws now steals 4% health from opponents and stuns for an additional 0.5 Seconds. Level 4 Vampiric Aura Moved from Level 1 to Level 4.
