Thrall Returns in New Safe Haven 8.2 Cinematic

Recommended Posts

Excellent cinematic.

I know Bliz has said repeatedly ol' Sylvanas isnt going to be evil Horde Leader V2.0, but i mean holy F, its getting to the point theyre going to have to Retcon some major stuff to fix all this and make her believably 'acceptable.'

It took several EXPANSIONS worth of story to make Illidan's change believable.

Nice cinematic, but the story is a bit...

I mean, Sylvannas decides to kill Thrall (who has been doing nothing this whole time and hasn't been a threat...oh, and she kind of owes him a LOT).

That aside...So she sends...2 rogues?    Against one of the most renowned fighters in the entire world?     Even if Saurfang hadn't come, the ease they were beaten down with speaks volumes.   Remember his wife is also pretty powerful (and unlike Thrall has full access to Shaman magic).

Also a bit sad we didn't get to see or hear a name for Thralls child/children, which suggests we never will.

Sylvanas went full moustached villain by now. She will kill anyone who might stand on her way (even considered slaughtering her sisters, as seen in "Windrunner"). She knows how honorable Thrall is, and how he could come back to right her wrongs, which explains why she sent the Rogues to kill him just in case he had a change of heart.

She didn't send the Rogues after Thrall and Saurfang; just Thrall. Saurfang says he was tailing the two Rogues. But I agree that sending just two is pretty underwhelming.

Regarding Thrall's children, maybe we will get to know them in a possible questline. Who knows.

Nope, he isn't with Blizzard anymore and hasn't written anything for them in a long time. I'm not sure I would like Metzen back, story probably would have been in similar state as it is now, he was the one who came up with Cataclysm plot after all.

Still disappointed how many characters in Legion went "missing". Final war against Burning Legion and someone as important as Thrall, who fought them before and played important role in beating them back, disappears (same can be said for Jaina and several others, who had personal stakes at that war).

As far as I'm aware the last true expansion that Chris actually helped with story development wise was MoP (for sure) or possibly WoD (unclear) both of which and including cata, were all better iterations of the current game and story right now. Anything he has contributed is far better than what we have now.

I can imagine Thrall and Aggra fighting Forsaken Assassins like that old couple in "Kung Fu Hustle".

Blizzard is obviously a HUGE fan of DnD.

Everything a character does seems to be decided by the throw of a dice.

Characters don't do what makes sense, what is sensible. There is no plot that evolves, everything that happens next is completly random.

Kill somebody? Befriend the same? Completly ignore him and do nothing? Decided by a throw. Oh, and if the character happens to throw a 1 - critical failure - he commits suicide.

Blizzard used to be good in storytelling.

It seems that the current writers of Blizzard and Game of Thrones graduated together.

I haven't seen an actual in-game or recently mentioned model of Sever, Garad's axe that Durotan wielded after Garad's death.  My money is on them naming this axe Sever.  No reason not to.  Change my mind.

This is what I hate so much. At this point despite saying "Nah she's not just Garrosh 2.0" they're basically just having her do thing to look evil. Like no rhyme or reason, just "Well, let's have her stab a baby purely to show how EVIL she is." TBH it makes me think of DMC  when a pregnant woman who's a non-combatant is just... shot in the back as a building point of "this villain is so bad!" It just feel really cliche.

One thing, there is some contradiction as rogues (along the likes of warriors and hunters) were described as non-magical (though they sometimes use enchanted weapons and equipment).

Rogues are not non-magical; All 3 Rogue Specs use limited Shadow Magic (Stealth / Cloak of Shadows).

Subtlety Rogues are balls deep into Shadow Magic.  Sub uses Shadow Magic to empower their Attacks and their Weapons.

Sub Rogues use Shadow Magic around the same level as Shadow Priests they just do it in Melee instead of at Range.  Sub Rogues have their own Void Form style buff in Shadow BladesShadow Blades  and they use Shadow Clones as a finisher in Secret TechniqueSecret Technique  in addition to the main ability being Shadow DanceShadow Dance .

Those are game mechanics, it was about how it actually looks in lore. If we were going by game mechanics, that means every warrior can charge at super speed, leaving flames behind and hunters conjure animals out of nothing and at one point everyone learned to create unlimited ammo, no point discussing this, it's just how game works. Shadow abilities existed long before that retcon "everything with shadow=void dimension", it was a literal shadow back then. Until this cinematic, rogues were just sneaky (even sometimes having trouble with moving unnoticed, wouldn't happen with full invisibility), so in case of this cinematic it was just a rule of cool or retcon. In RPGs rogues are among non-magical classes, the reason stealth exists as literal invisibility, because it's convenient from gameplay perspective, rather than creating a complicated cover system, which would have been useless in many environments.

I agree that in most RPGs Rogues are non-magical.

Rogue's use of Shadow Magic in WoW is a deviation from most RPGs.  The Cloak of ShadowsCloak of Shadows ability in general is a Rogue wrapping themselves in Shadow Magic to remove Magical Abilities; Again, almost everything a Sub Rogue does is Shadow Magic.  I played Sub for years and if you play Sub at max level for any amount of time you will not call Rogues non-magical.  StealthStealth is described as hiding in the shadows.  Hiding in the shadows when there are no shadows because you are standing in the daylight requires magic.

If you really want to go by RPG Rules, Hunter's shouldn't even be a class.  Hunter's according to most RPGs should just be a spec of the Scout / Rogue class.

The only non-magical classes in WoW are Hunters and Warriors.

But that's the thing, some of their abilities also look magical. Do they use magic themselves or just in-game representation? I guess it can be handwaved as them using magical trinkets, enchanted equipment etc., although it's also a common explanation for rogues (non-magical, some might have used specific enchanted items). This cinematic is the first canon representation of actual invisibility for rogues.

Subtlety (even specs are also more like game mechanics, since many characters don't fit them, like Thrall fighting as mix of elemental/enhancement shaman) used these abilities before void retcon and back then (outside of game mechanics) rogues were represented as non-magical, like this guy: https://wow.gamepedia.com/Brink_Spannercrank

Only used a magical trinket. But that's likely overthinking, they probably didn't care and thought it looked cool.

I wonder if it was Nathanos that sent the assassins and not Sylvanas...

I was thinking the same thing, either Nathanos or some other third party. With all her cunning I don't think the Warchief herself would make the obvious mistake of sending 2 low level rogues against Thrall. Some sort of elaborate trap would be much more or her liking.

Maybe that WAS a part of said trap? To lure Thrall, Saurfang and other resistance, clump them all together at one point and mana-bomb the heck out of it or something.

I'd love to see a full movie done with these BfA cinematic developers at the helm.

anyone else see Josh Brolin playing Thrall in a live action movie?

I just looked him up and I totally agree with your assessment.

And victory for Sylvanas? Victory for anyone who will OPPOSE her! I have always and will always hate that b**ch. My bloodknight even hates her. He only grudgingly does as he is bidden IF it isn't outright evil. Seriously, he will never support her and he and Nathanos have a healthy dislike for one another. All I can say is BRING BACK THRALL AND I WILL FOLLOW HIM LOYALLY!

I'm pretty sure WoW's hunters are based off of D&D' 'Ranger' class which IS a magical class in that it eventually gains access to Druid/Nature spells...and D&D's Ranger was surely a nod to Tolkien's Aragorn. And, initially, Ranger's were a sub-class/spec of Fighters.

Another thing that is bugging me about it is that how did Saurfang know and see to follow the assassins in the first place? When he first walked into Thrall's place, did anyone notice that he was looking around even before he spoke?

Also, those assassins were not that good because they were heard before being seen. Saurfang looking back, Thrall looking up to the roof...

Patch 8.2 is live for two weeks and we still have no signs of the Alliance Bee mounts teased at last year's BlizzCon.
Bee mounts were teased during last year's "What's Next" panel at BlizzCon, but we still know very little of them even after Rise of Azshara went live.
Datamining suggests that the acqusition questline is related to a NPCs named Barry the Beekeeper and [PH] Hivename Hivemother and it will take place in Stormsong Valley. Here are the entries we found for the Bee faction:
Tidebreak Hive A species of bee known for their unusual size. While newcomers to Stormsong Valley, they quickly made their presence known to adventurers and insect enthusiasts alike. Tidebreak Guardian Tidebreak Hivemother Tidebreak Harvester The following quests have been added to Stormsong Valley in Patch 8.2:
A Defender Emerges A New Queen A Royal Awakening Defender of the Hive One of the Hive The Usurper PH Bee Mount
You can find a bunch of recolors of the mount here.

      Fly Animation

For what it's worth, a pin in the WoW Secret Finding Discord suggests the mount cannot be obtained just yet. Did Blizzard forget to add it to the live version of the game?

Limit have done it after many, many low % wipes! Za'qul, Harbinger of Ny'alotha has fallen, opening the way to Queen Azshara, the final boss of the raid and we get to see what she looks like on Mythic. Obviously huge congratulations on the kill. Method have been doing Heroic splits all day

First off, let's take a look at that Za'qul kill from GM Max's PoV, which is actually tank Darkee's PoV, as Max isn't playing, but is actually just coaching. We're also starting at the exciting part a little later in the fight:

The timestamp is 03:13:10 in case it doesn't autoplay for you
The big thing here is that Limit prepared and geared 4 fire mages, which other guilds didn't gear up, which gave them a big advantage on Za'qul specifically.
And now let's move o to Azshara, with the very first pull ending in a wipe extremely quickly, with the new Mythic wall/laser mechanic causing chaos. Here's the second pull, which went a little better. While we technically don't get to see the Queen herself yet, we get a better idea of the new mechanic, and it's always great watching a guild figuring out new things about a boss for the very first time.

The timestamp is 03:23:48 in case it doesn't autoplay for you
And here's the third pull, this time from Red Bull's coverage with commentators:

The timestamp is 09:17:38 in case it doesn't autoplay for you
An amazing performance by Limit overall, but the race is far from over and we'll see how long it takes Method (or any of the other 5 guilds curently progressing on Za'qul) to catch up, as Limit is now generating a lot of advantage as they progress on Azshara!

Another big day in the race as a couple of guilds caught up to the very top, and plenty caught up on the earlier bosses, but the headline is Za'qul (very, very barely) lives! We've had some major progress on the penultimate boss of the raid, with Limit getting so close to the kill they could taste it.
The day started pretty standard for a Friday, with very slow going on progress for Za'qul and Method slowly learning the fight and what strats and comps to use, not really getting too far ahead of the previous day (36%) in regards to actual boss hp. Meanwhile we had a lot of guilds with a lot of catching up to do, with only Method and Limit having gotten past Orgozoa and Queen's Court.
This time Pieces did come through on their reputation and were the first non Method/Limit guild to break through that 5/8 barrier and downed Orgozoa World 3rd, EU 2nd. The next kill on the jellyfish was both expected and unexpected, as Aversion once again followed Pieces with only an hour and a half delay and grabbed the 4th kill, very impressively. That 5/8 very suddenly went from 0 to 3 guilds, as Ji Tian Hong grabbed that Asia 1st and World 5th, showing the power of the Asia server guilds once they caught up to their massive 2 day disadvantage.

We then had an interesting development in Limit's Za'qul progress, not necessarily in terms of how far along they got, as they were only 1.2% better than the previous day's best, but their GM and raid leader Max benched himself. Max continued raid leading from the bench, watching the new tank Darkee's PoV and calling all the shots, coach-style, basically becoming the 21st raider. Check out the video of this best try at the time with the very interesting dynamic of Max's raid leading:

Pieces were the next to make waves as they took 6 hours on Queen's Court to down her, finally joining Method and Limit on 6/8 and grabbing that World 3rd, EU 2nd on another boss. We then had a visit from best name ever contenders FatSharkYes as they moved to 5/8 and got the Orgozoa World 6th and EU 4th, followed by AFK R on 8/Asia 2nd and Club Camel on 9/US/OC 2nd!
Around 2:30 AM CEST it was looking like Limit had gotten both their strat and composition down and were comfortable with the execution part as well, as they moved the boss down a pretty big chunk from their previous best try, landing on 20%. The next 3.5 or so hours were filled with constant progression and lower boss hp, from 12% to 8, etc, with it all culminating in a 1.3% pull at 6AM:

This try was amazingly close and you can see the frustration on Max's face, but this made Limit determined to get the kill before they went to sleep, which they usually do around 8-9AM CEST. The next 2 hours went by with several sub-10% tries, with a 6% one being the closest, at least until the next HUGE disappointment. At 7:50AM Limit managed ti beat their previous best, which you'd think would mean they killed it, but no, they got the boss down to 0.9% before wiping.! They also reached around 170 pulls compared to Method's 106 and compared to Limit's Lady Ashvane at around 80. Unfortunately, all their post 0.9% effort was for naught as they didn't manage to get that kill by 9AM when they finally decided it wasn't worth pushing any further and went to sleep. Method will start raiding soon and pushing onward from the 27% best that they stopped at before bed. Whether Limit's new tries will give an advantage to Method in the form of using the same comp and strategy remains to be seen, as it all depends on which classes and specs are properly geared and whether a guild can even execute the other's strats properly depending on that. And just before we finish, let's take a look at the last few minutes of that heartbreaking 0.9%/2 Million HP try:

Limit are actually still going at it, so if you're interested definitely visit Max's stream and get into the crazyness live! In case they do get before they go sleep, we'll make a new post, as Za'qul deserves it (not to mention our first peek at Mythic Azshara)!
All in all, it was an incredibly exciting day (or, more specifically, night) as progress on Za'qul was truly great, with it going down very quickly at first, then a little slower towards the 30% mark, and finally being stuck in the 20-30% range as many, many strategies were tried out, only to finally become very killable once Limit found their winning strat. Whether Method can push forward while Limit sleep, as Limit did when Method slept remains to be seen, or more specifically, can they actually go that 1 very small step further and actually get the kill. The race is really heating up and the top two guilds are incredibly close to both each other and the kill, with Queen Azshara awaiting them beyond the 7/8 barrier.

The hotfixes have finally started shrinking significantly, as we get a relatively small batch today. The previously announced Purification protocol change arrives, with two more essence changes to go with it, we get a big buff to timewarped badge rewards for missions and a whole lot of quest changes.
      July 19 (source)
      Followers and Missions
Missions that reward Timewarped Badges now reward 50 Timewarped Badges (was 15). Items
Heart of Azeroth Purification Protocol ’s (Essence) Rank 2 Major Power’s effect no longer causes an annihilated enemy to trigger Bolstering, Bursting, or Sanguine affix effects when it dies. The Well of Existence (Essence) now becomes stealthed when its wielder enters stealth (e.g. Druids’ Prowl or Rogues’ Shroud of Concealment). Vision of Perfection (Essence) no longer grants Guardian Druids with its Minor Power’s Rank 2 healing effect at Rank 1. Quests
Fixed an issue that prevented some players from receiving a Call to Arms Distinction after completing the weekly “Call to Arms” quests. The amount of Construction Project materials needed for “Cogfrenzy's Construction Frenzy ” has been reduced. Additionally, purchasing access to the Charging Station from Flux now fills 50% of the quest completion bar. Increased the damage of Lord Hydraxis and decreased the health and damage of Zan’jir Scaleguards in “The Lords of Water ”. The length of the time to complete the quest has been adjusted. Fixed a bug where Deepwater Maw sometimes didn’t spawn when using the Hundred-Fathom Lure during “Let's Fish! ”. Clockwork Giants can now be scanned by multiple players in “The Other Place ”.
