Recommended Posts

J3IeTSQ.jpg

In this article, we go through all of Qhira's abilities and talents. The Hero is now available for testing and will go live next week.

Abilities

Trait

  • [D] Grappling Hook (Cooldown: 25 seconds) - Qhira fires a Grappling Hook that pulls her to any terrain it contacts. If an enemy Hero is hit, they take 36 damage and Qhira launches at them, dealing an additional 112 damage on impact. Can be used while Revolving Sweep is active.

Basic Abilities

  • [Q] Carnage (Mana: 40, Cooldown: 7 seconds) - Unleash your sword in the target direction, continuously dealing 30 damage to enemies caught in its path.
  • [W] Blood Rage (Mana: 35, Cooldown: 8 seconds)
    • Active: Qhira deals 32 damage and heals for 85 Health per enemy Hero affected. Damage and healing is increased by 50% per each additional stack on that Hero.
    • Passive: Basic Attacks and Abilities damage cause enemies to bleed for 44 damage over 4 seconds. Stacks up to 5 times.
  • [E] Revolving Sweep (Mana: 70, Cooldown: 16 seconds) - Attach your sword on the first enemy Hero hit, dealing 96 damage and Stunning them for 0.25 seconds. Once attached, Qhira becomes immune to all effects, swinging around the target for 2.75 seconds and dealing 105 damage to enemies between you and the target. Re-activate to send you to the target's location knocking them away, dealing 108 damage and Stunning them for 0.75 sec.

Heroic Abilities

  • [R1] Unrelenting Strikes (Mana: 60, Cooldown: 75 seconds) - Deal 44 damage to all nearby enemies every 0.5 seconds for 2.5 seconds as your sword grows outward. Upon expiring, deal 83 damage to all nearby enemy Heroes and Stun them for 0.75 seconds.
  • [R2] Final Strike (Mana: 45, Cooldown: 40 seconds) - After 1 second, strike your sword in a line to deal 415 damage to all enemies in its path. This damage is increased by 25% to any enemy below 50% Health.

Talents

Level 1

  • Maximum Effort - If Carnage damages the same enemy Hero 3 times, it deals an additional 108 damage and slows them by 20% for 2 seconds.
  • Fatal Wounds - While at maximum stacks, Blood Rage's bleed deals 50% more damage to enemy Heroes below 50% Health.
    • Quest: Damage Heroes with Blood Rage's bleed.
    • Reward: After 125 instances of damage, increase Blood Rage's duration by 2 seconds.
  • Finishing Touch - Basic Attacks against enemy Heroes below 50% Health deal an additional 25% damage and grant 35% Attack Speed for 2.5 seconds.

Level 4

  • Upstage - Damaging at least 2 Heroes with Blood Rage causes Qhira to Evade the next 4 Basic Attacks within 12 seconds.
  • Ensnaring Swing - While Qhira is attached to an enemy Hero, they are Slowed by 25%. Secondary enemies hit by Revolving Sweep's swing are Slowed by 35% for 3 seconds.
  • Your Pain, My Gain - Basic Attacking an enemy Hero grants Qhira 10 Armor for 3 seconds (stacking up to 3 times).

Level 7

  • The Thirst - Anytime Carnage damages an enemy Hero, Qhira's next Basic Attack within 4 seconds deals 12 additional damage and restores 50% of the total damage dealt as Health. Damage stacks up to 10 times.
  • Healmonger - If Blood Rage damages an enemy Hero below 50% Health, it heals for an additional 205 Health.
  • Siphoning Link - Damaging an enemy Hero with the initial impact or revolution of Revolving Sweep causes Qhira to regenerate 96 Health over 4 seconds (stacking up to 4 times).

Level 10

Level 13

  • Chainsaw - Carnage's cooldown regenerates 100% faster while an enemy Hero has maximum Blood Rage stacks.
  • Pulsing Pain - Each additional enemy Hero hit by Revolving Sweep causes the primary target to take an additional 115 damage.
  • The Hunted - Basic Attacking an enemy Hero increases your Basic Attack damage against that Hero by 25%. Stacks up to 4 times and lasts 4 seconds. This bonus is reset if a different Hero is attacked.

Level 16

  • Booming Kick - Increase the Stun duration of Revolving Sweep's reactivation by 0.25 seconds. Enemy Heroes around the primary target are also affected by Revolving Sweep's re-activation.
  • Lingering Ailment - Enemy Heroes hit by Revolving Sweep's initial impact and swing have their Armor reduced by 15 for 3 seconds.
  • Swing Life Away - Revolving Sweep's cooldown recharges 150% faster while Qhura is swinging around her target. She also gains 50 Spell Armor for 2 seconds after the re-activation impact.

Level 20

  • Silent Killer - The initial cast of Unrelenting Strikes Silences enemies who are within the area for 2 seconds and its cooldown is reduced by 3 seconds when hitting enemy Heroes.
  • Unleashed Potential - Increase the damage to enemy Heroes under 50% Health from 25% to 50%. If an enemy Hero dies within 1.5 seconds of being hit by Final Strike, then reset the cooldowns of Final Strike and all of Qhira's Basic Abilities.
  • Utility Belt - Grappling Hook's cooldown is reset when hitting an enemy Hero with the initial impact of Revolving Sweep and recharges 900% faster if Qhira hasn't taken damage within the last 5 seconds.
  • No Sanctuary - Nearby enemy Heroes below 50% Health are revealed and you gain 20% Movement Speed while an enemy Hero is revealed by you in this way. Additionally, you deal 20% increased damage to these revealed enemies.

I am extremely gutted at this release. Never have I more believed the sentiment that Blizzard is so wildly out of touch with their playerbase. The fact that the "team put effort into this hero" doesn't matter, I should hope they put effort into every hero. If I wanted to play a moba that has better game design, I'd go play League. I play HotS because I am a Blizzard fan, Orphea didn't sit well with the playerbase and that was with at least SOME build-up. This character is generic and has absolutely nothing behind it. She doesn't look right or fit into this game at all and "the kit worked on no one else" is a lie that I am happy to elaborate on if anyone disagrees. Imagine if Smash Bros. decided to say "hey we released random X character from Subspace instead of X beloved Nintendo character.", it would suck, and it DOES suck.

@leapingshadow: It's obvious they were trying to make a "Nexus storyline" with Orphea and this one.   Those plans got "gutted" when upper management, probably the financial types and possibly ones not working at Blizzard, decided Heroes was a dead end and took out most of the team.     The Devs that are left are doing the best they can with what's probably very limited resources.    If you're angry, take it out on the shareholders.

Why finish the Hero then? Orphea released to very un-receptive feedback because she wasn't interesting and for the same reason as Qhira isn't why people are interested in hero releases. I wouldn't care so much about this if hero releases were so precious now, it feels like 3 months have been absolutely wasted waiting for heroes that would be so much cooler. If you're about to say "it's your fault for anticipating new heroes" what kind of mentality is that? Don't get excited about future prospects is a sure fire way to kill off interest about your game.

She seems pretty fun in "try mode". They pulled together some mechanics from Malthael, Ana, Sonya, Falstad and Butcher. I guess this was the idea behind the teaser. Most of her skills are improved versions of the skills from the heroes I mentioned. Her Q is pretty much Malthael's W. Her W is Malthael's and Ana's traits combined. Her trait is Sonya's spear. She has a better version of Falstad's Hinterland Blast (+ a glimpse of Sundering) and the Butcher's Furnace Blast. No doubt she's going to be a great faceroll hero for ARAMs.

I haven't even looked at the video or her abilities. Ima have jump on that bandwagon with @leapingshadow. I play both ranked and QM and I rarely ever seen an Orphea. If I were to ratio the probability? I'd give it 3/10 in QM and 1.5/10 in ranked. Now I know these numbers don't really mean anything but people want to play fun inspiring heroes not makeup garbage to make a buck. And while I ended up liking orphea as a mage the thing is there's so many other heroes that can play better than her. So thats just my take on this.

Literally judging a book by its cover.

Orphea was really just another ADC/mage with a basic kit which could be argued as just a more aggressive Li Ming. Her place in what is left off the meta only truly exists in Qm because much like more Heroes in HotS a team must be built around X hero for that hero to be somewhat effective along with the factor of potential counters to X hero.

To be honest with you. If you prefer another game design and only play for the characters, you should probably switch things up. Gameplay is essential for fun.

LotR Conquest is hated by most players even though it has iconic characters in the game. The same goes for many other licensed games from Star Wars to Pokemon.

On the other hand Smash Brothers released irrelevant characters like the Mii Swordfighter and the Piranha Plant. But the great Gameplay makes the whole thing awesome.

Characters alone don't make a game fun and it shouldn't be the only reason to play. The same can be said about graphics. They can be breathtaking while the gameplay is flat (i.e. Avatar). It all comes down to the quality and personal preference in game design.

It's like they said, when they have lot of options, they could start design Hero first, abilities second. But now it's much easier to start off with abilities. Given current state of the game, I'm completely fine with Nexus Heroes as long as they can't be exchanged existing character.

What I'm currently more annoyed by is that her Trait should be her W and vice versa. W reeks of Trait with it's passive and simple click-and-do-something ability. Mindless.

Playing known heroes is what originally drew many people to this game, including me. But there are also others who may knew only one series or two. I've played with some people who only knew Diablo and Overwatch for example, so character just being from Starcraft or Warcraft didn't do much for them (yet played some of them, if they found their kits to be fun), and they probably felt the same like others currently feel about this hero. Several heroes were long in development before downsizing happened, this is likely one of them. There is demand for Deathwing, which is it's own meme by now, like Kel'Thuzad used to be and some people will complain regardless of what is being released next.

It's a game that you mainly play for mechanics, known heroes and skins add fun on top of them. However, if you don't like mechanics of HotS, then perhaps it isn't a game for you. What's superior to you, is bad for someone else. I do not enjoy mechanics like last-hitting, they feel very clunky to me. There is no reason for their existence, other than people being used to them (last-hitting is a remnant of WC3 DotA, due to technical limitation of editor back then).

Personally, I wouldn't mind to see another Overwatch character. We didn't have one for over a 1,5 year, but many would rage (rather stupid reason if they actually decided it because of that). Only Genji and Tracer had strong combination of mobility and damage on release (nerfed since then), yet people kept parroting "no more OW, they too mobile and op". There are some heroes with potentially interesting kits if deftly transplanted to a MOBA.

I have to agree with @leapingshadow to be honest. Orphea I could go with because they put alot of effort of building up to the character with background stories and character development, but for Qhira the only background we got was a 5 minute piece of a teaser video...

Liie stated by so many others, there are so many cool characters from the blizz universes to add but still they ignore their player base.

I never played overwatch or diablo but even for heroes of those universe I get excited because I usually end up scrounding the web for backstory and lore regarding those characters and I love blizz lore from ALL the universes.

On a side note her kit does look very cool so big up to the devs for that, but im just a bit dissapointed that there is hardly to none backstory for her. Even if its just some comics like with Orphea and yes I know its probablt because of budget cuts they werent able to provide set background but ye you know, better to go for a well developed existing character then imo.

Blizzard made Qhira just because they wanted to have a character with a chainsaw-like blade. There is no other character in the Blizzard franchise that could work with her kit. So rather than let a really cool idea and concept go to waste, they created a brand-new character in the Nexus universe. I'm perfectly fine with that. Her design is pretty unique, and so is her gameplay.

Sure, we didn't get the build-up we got from Orphea, but given the limited budget the HotS team has to work with, I'm inclined to say they won't be making a comic to show a backstory to Qhira. And that is ok too.

I understand your comparison with Smash Bros., but Qhira's addition doesn't mean we won't see Deathwing, Grom, or whatever the hell the whiny playerbase cries for; and even after we do get Deathwing and Grom, people will still complain and ask for the next character in the line. Qhira is not taking anyone's spot.

I think this was the last Hero they worked on before the game got gutted. I, for one, am happy that we get at least a new Hero instead of none.

That's a terrible standard to set for a company like Blizzard. They're still making a lot of money and getting something no one wanted or asked for because the developers thought they wanted to flex the fact "we can make an original character" is bad for this game.

I highly doubt that is the reason behind the developers creating Qhira.

That's what I got out of it.

It's a weapon. They could have given it to a number of Warcraft or Diablo characters. Even Overwatch. Not sure why they do these Nexus characters when any mechanic can be adjusted to strengthen their franchise.

The amount of people that play characters because of the franchises is quite large. This is actual laziness. A tie-in character would actually take more effort since it has to mesh with an existing franchise, but this one, nope, just random universe completely separate from everything else. Not even part of the Nexus like Orphea.

I wonder if Reptile or Chun Li are next.

The idea of expanding the Nexus with original characters was something the developers were always a bit unsure at first, but Orphea was a really successful character in my opinion. And working on original characters allows the team to be more creative with concepts that wouldn't work on existing characters from other franchises.

I really don't understand why people are so angry at Qhira. It is not like she is taking the spot of another Hero. It is not like her addition will prevent them from adding other characters.

Folks over on Reddit did a narrated version of the Spotlight, and it's way better.

It definitely is. But I wouldn't like an official narrated spotlight where the dude just tries to copy Kevin's manner of speak. Either we get a whole new person to do so or stay with no narrators.

I really don't care if they release ANY heroes.  I play the game for free, only puchased gems once.

All i care about is getting trolls out of ranked and making sure heroes are balanced.  Nothing else matters to me.

I'm noticing the anger here seems to be at the "character", not necessarily the gameplay around her, which IMO is the only important bit.

I think people are reacting a bit too negatively to the mere fact that she's a new character. The kit honestly looks fun, the kind of sandbox kit that allows for interesting gameplay to develop naturally. Any thoughts on stand-out talents? I have a worry that Revolving Sweep might be too slow to reliably hit multiple heroes, which would reduce the use of several of her talents.

I'm particularly impressed by her Basic Attack build. Testing it on the Try Mode seems to be quite powerful.
