Runecarving in Shadowlands

The official previews continue with a look at Runecarving, or forging Legendary Items in Shadowlands.

We looked at how we will forge Legendary Items in Shadowlands in Towelliee's preview.

In the Shadowlands, players will meet the Runecarver, a mysterious figure locked away in the very depths of Torghast. To find the Runecarver, players will need to go through the initial Torghast experience and defeat Warden Skoldus in Skoldus Halls, receiving a mysterious key which starts the questline that unlocks the beginning of the Runecarver’s story. Once unlocked, players will be able to call on the power of the Runecarver to carve ancient runes on their armor and imbue them with Legendary power.

For testing, we’re plan to add a teleport NPC inside Torghast that will take testers directly to the Runecarver, so they can begin crafting their own Legendary armor almost immediately.

Memories and Legendary Powers

To craft Legendary armor, you’ll first need to retrieve specific memories that contain Legendary powers. These memories can be found all over Shadowlands – from questing, running dungeons with friends, fighting against the enemy faction, or defeating powerful foes in Castle Nathria and the Maw, there will be plenty of work for the bravest of champions to do in order to collect them all.

Once found, players can take these memories back to the Runecarver in Torghast, who will then be able to imbue specific Profession-crafted armor pieces with this power. Not all powers can be applied to all armor slots. For example, some powers can only be applied to Boots and Pants.

The Legendary powers available to players in Shadowlands have strong ties to the history of Azeroth. As they are memories in their base form, these Legendary powers are new interpretations of Set Bonuses, Legendaries, and other powers that players have had access to in World of Warcraft’s history. In addition to these more historic powers, players will also be able to unlock a few Torghast Anima Powers as possible Legendary powers.

Crafting your Legendary

Before you can craft your Legendary, you’ll need to gather a few materials first:

  • A Base Item. These items are created by Blacksmiths, Leatherworkers, Tailors and Jewelcrafters and serve as the vessel for Legendary powers. These items are not soulbound, and can be acquired from other players, alts or the Auction House. There’s no requirement that a character has to have a crafting profession to make Legendary armor; crafting Legendaries is open to all players as long as you’ve collected the appropriate reagents.
  • The Legendary power of your choosing.
  • Two Optional Reagents. These optional reagents dictate the secondary stats (Critical Strike, Haste, Mastery and Versatility) of the crafted Legendary. Unlike normal Profession crafted items, these reagents are necessary for the creation of Legendary armor.
  • Carcerus. This raw source of power is used to fuel the Runecarver’s Chamber and is needed to craft Legendary armor. Carcerus is found in Torghast as a reward for completing sections of the Tower. As the item level of the Base Item increases, so does the required fuel to create Legendaries, so players will need more Carcerus as they start crafting higher item level pieces.

Somehow, the friendly Runeataur has found himself stuck inside the Runecarver’s chamber. He’ll be able to supply players with the base armor pieces, legendary powers, optional reagents, and Carcerus required to craft Legendary armor. But he’s not a big fan of being trapped inside the chamber with the Runecarver, so he won’t be around for long.

Additional Information and Updates

Players will only be able to wear one piece of Legendary Armor at a time and Legendary powers cannot be applied to Weapons or Trinkets.

To start, there will be an allotment of 4 Legendary powers for each base class and 4 for each spec. In addition to that, there will be a generic pool of Legendary powers available to all classes.

Not all classes currently have Legendary powers implemented. We expect to get all of the class powers in place over the next few weeks.

In the coming weeks, we’re planning on adding a system to allow players to upgrade the item level of their Legendary armor through the Runecarver. If they’ve imbued a lower item level piece, they’ll be able to collect more materials from Torghast and Professions, instead of having to imbue a brand new piece of armor.

Please use this thread to provide your feedback and discuss Runecarving and Legendary powers in Shadowlands.

Thank you very much!

My only concern is that some will be time-gated or rng based. I surely hope not because it would feel really bad for some classes where their best power is locked behind something as such where another class's best power is one that they start with.

It's been two days since the Slime Serpent has been discovered, and since this one requires players to solo Plaguefall Heroic (or Mythic), there's already been a couple of hints and tips to make that easier on lower geared players and specs that have trouble soloing! If you don't know how to get the mount in the first place, check out this article.
The big tip was discovered, of course, by the WoW Secret Finding Discord, same as the mount itself (as spotted by Wowhead), and it actually makes the solo a lot easier if you have someone to help you out. Now, you'll still have to solo the final boss yourself, but a higher geared player or a spec more suited for soloing can get you there, and considering Stradama is generally easier, especially for some specs, this is quite a good tip!
The "method" is pretty simple, basically you just can't be in the instance at the same time, but can be in the same party. So the strong solo/better geared player just zones in alone, clears everything up aside from Margrave Stradama, leaves, and then the player that needs the mount zones in - pretty simple really! Even if this wasn't intended it's extremely unlikely that Blizzard will change/fix it, as players are already somewhat upset that this mount is gated behind either having a strong solo class or really good gear.

Source: WoW Secret Finding Discord user Mat.
The second tip is for Mages specifically, as DallMit also acquired some help in order to clear the dungeon, but his was a bit more hostile. The Fungalmacer mob has some pretty useful things to share, despite trying to kill you, specifically the Wonder Grow buff which stacks up to 10. The trick is, you have to bring it along for the ride for the final two bosses and kept Spellstealing the buff, as its being castbuff as, as you can see from this video:
The method is a bit more time intense, as there's extra trash that needs to be cleared, in order to bring the big guns to the final bosses, but it's well worth it, if nothing else so you can be a giant green mushroom-hyped death dealer.
Hopefully these helped a little, and more players can get their hands on the mount!

As the PTR rages we're back to live and Castle Nathria to see what things are actually like right now, with some more DPS logs! This week our guide writers will be taking a look at the impressively performing and still rising Assassination and an incredibly stable, if unimpressive Havoc, which has been one of the only specs to stay in pretty much exactly the same place since the raid launched.
      Mythic Rankings
But first we're off to the high-end, where things remain stable, but we do have some movement, as Frost DK overtakes Windwalker, as the two seem to be alternating each week in 7th. Meanwhile, Assassination continues its rise, even in the high percentages, as it moves past Retribution, while Outlaw also jumps 1 spot, taking down Destruction.

95th percentile Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
All percentiles actually saw some more movement at the top, with Fire claiming 3rd from Shadow, as Elemental and Assassination trade places. Frost DKs jumped the most here, passing 5 other specs to get to 9th, while Arcane drops a couple spots, to make room for them, Fury and Outlaw.

All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.

      Spec Analysis
      Assassination Rogue by Seliathan
      Havoc Demon Hunter by Wordup

      Heroic Rankings, All Percentages
In Heroic things remain mostly the same, with the biggest difference from Mythic being the still very high placement of Marksmanship, as it's sticking to 7th place compared to Mythic's 14th.

All percentiles Heroic data by Warcraft Logs.

As always, if you want even more info on a spec, you can check out our class guides here, or for even more data, head on over to Warcraft Logs.

Do not waste your Polished Pet Charms on items that increase your maximum number of pets! The cap has been entirely removed in Patch 9.1, which means you can instead save and spend them on something meaningful!
In Chains of Domination, there is no longer a cap on the maximum number of pets you can own, which means you can have unlimited pets. However, they are still limited to 3 of each species.
This means you no longer need to buy Interdimensional Pet Portal and Pocket Pet Portal that cost 1,000 Polished Pet Charms each.
The useful tip comes from Reddit user Tyrsenus.

To make raiding gear best for raiding, Blizzard added upgradable Essence-like raid gems to the game in Patch 9.1 that can only be attached to Sanctum of Domination gear.
There are three gems and each comes with 5 ranks and unique effects which become more powerful with increasing ranks. These effects seem to work just like Essences. At this time, it is unknown how the upgrade process works.
      Grim Harvester
Shard of Domination - Grim Harvester - Rank 1 - Your melee attacks have a chance to drain a Soul Fragment from your target. Shard of Domination - Grim Harvester - Rank 2 - Soul Fragments from Grim Harvest now stack up to 10 times. Shard of Domination - Grim Harvester - Rank 3 - Reaching 10 stacks unleashes Chaos Bane, dealing Shadow damage and granting you additional power. Shard of Domination - Grim Harvester - Rank 4 - Chaos Bane's damage is increased by 100%. Shard of Domination - Grim Harvester - Rank 5 - Chaos Bane explodes again when it expires. Sanguine Rage
Shard of Domination - Sanguine Rage - Rank 1 - Your Critical Hits have a chance to spill your enemy's blood on the ground, which you can absorb. Shard of Domination - Sanguine Rage - Rank 2 - Your healing from Blood Patches is increased by 50%. Shard of Domination - Sanguine Rage - Rank 3 - If 5 Blood Patches exist at once, they congeal into a Blood Beast. Shard of Domination - Sanguine Rage - Rank 4 - When you drop below 50% health, your blood spills into 3 Blood Patches. Shard of Domination - Sanguine Rage - Rank 5 - When your Blood Beast expires, heal for all their remaining health. Unbound Pestilence
Shard of Domination - Unbound Pestilence - Rank 1 - Your helpful abilities send a Swarm of Locusts to protect your ally. Shard of Domination - Unbound Pestilence - Rank 2 - Your Swarm of Locusts now chains to up to 3 additional allies. Shard of Domination - Unbound Pestilence - Rank 3 - Swarm of Locusts casts automatically on a nearby ally every 60 seconds. Shard of Domination - Unbound Pestilence - Rank 4 - Swarm of Locusts has a 25% chance to cast twice when it casts. Shard of Domination - Unbound Pestilence - Rank 5 - When your allies with Swarm of Locusts are healed to full health, the Swarm damages a nearby enemy. You will be able to empower an item with a Shard of Domination by obtaining items called Boss Souls from bosses in the new raid. There's a raid quest, where you must collect 5 Boss Souls to create an item that allows you to empower an eligible item with a Shard of Domination gem.
[DNT] Shard of Domination Test Application Spell - Empower an eligible item with a Shard of Domination.

Currently, it is unknown how many pieces of gear we will be able to empower with a Shard of Domination. Blizzard mentioned in a BlizzConline interview that the effects would only work in the raid.

You can purchase two mounts from the Death's Advance quartermaster in Patch 9.1—Amber Shardhide and Soaring Razorwing. We preview both in this post.
Duchess Mynx <Death's Advance Quartermaster> is located in Keeper's Respite in Korthia. Currently, the mounts cost Stygia on the 9.1 PTR, but Blizzard said there will be a new currency in 9.1 and Korthia.

Amber Shardhide requires Revered and costs 5,000 Stygia (Placeholder Currency)
"The bright colors of Korthian wildlife indicate that they have either few predators, or are tough enough to fight back."

Soaring Razorwing requires Exalted and costs 7,500 Stygia (Placeholder Currency)
"The hide of the razorwing is light, allowing it to fly, but also quite tough, allowing them to survive passage into the Maw."

You can find more Death's Advance rewards here.
