Sylvanas Defeat and Sanctum of Domination Cinematic Memes

Recommended Posts

The new cinematic has arrived and, well, it's not exactly a fan favorite. As usual, the WoW community reacted with some pretty strong opinions, and we'll get to them at a later point as well, but for now let's take a look at the more creative criticism in the form of memes and funny images!

The "relationship" between Sylvanas and the Jailer is the critical miss in the cinematic, and players picked up on that and then some, with plenty of depictions of it:

But that wasn't all that was wrong with the cinematic, as players were sensing some serious déjà vu, for a couple of characters we might be familiar with, one very similar-looking:

Then there's the comparisons to other... not so great moments in ongoing series:

And some are already looking ahead to 9.2 by looking behind at this (unfortunately more than 0% likely) old prediction comic:

However, not all Sanctum of Domination cutscenes were controversial, as an old Warchief got to go out with a bang, and players seem pretty happy with the way it played out (especially compared to Sylvanas):

And finally, a bit of a downer, but pretty accurate nonetheless:

I don't know if it's because of the pandemic, but i have a feeling it doesn't matter what blizzard will do, people will be salty about it. There is always something bad. Bad cinematic. Bad story. Bad store mount. Bad transmog from raid. Bad lore. Bad set. Always something wrong or bad.

Sometimes i'm wondering if people can really enjoy life rather than being salty about everything in the internet

Sylvanas is at least interesting character, which i can't tell about Tyrande, Thrall, Saurfang, Tyrande, Baine or Jaina.

Half agree. But good points. Though there is a rumor on 4chan (so take it with a grain of salt) Untitled.thumb.jpg.62d22c3583c4a10d730ae076a0c3ecdb.jpg

Lol, I actually liked it a bit. Like ya she appeared to be serving him the entire time, but she clearly thought they were working towards something else and wasnt totally ok with mind controlling Anduin. To me it was the obvious "hes going to betray her eventually" but at least she kind if  stood up for herself and was just like "ya I dont serve". At least in her head they were working together towards something.

heh I remember when we used to praise the lore of the warcraft univese, its kind of sad how pathetic it has become.

I never thought I'd play wow and not care about the story but here I am, they made it so bad that it's pointless to care at this point.

People will always complain, that's true, though that's nothing to do with the pandemic, that was true before, and will be true long after.

There's also the issue that people will complain when somethings wrong, but unless it's amazing, won't praise it for being ok, or adequate. They might say it's good, but far less than something that's bad. Add to that the delay to 9.1, and the build up since Sylvanus took over to lead to... this, which has been predicted for a long time and generally the most hated path, and yeah, was always going to be a shitshow.

It's blatantly wrong already because there is no time difference in the Shadowlands. They retconned that and said that time simply passes there like it does in a dream, like how you're able to live out a full day in your sleep despite only eight hours passing. Azeroth will be unchanged when we go back, or at least it won't be like decades have passed in our absence.

On topic though, this is terrible and it's exactly what all of us predicted. Time for everyone to forgive her for genocide because she feels bad about it now.

Pretty dismissive to say that people are just salty, and not that Blizzard has been in this downward trend for awhile, not to say there's not some good with each expansion.

And I challenge you to tell me how Sylvanas is more interesting than Tyrande, Green Jesus, Saurfang, Baine, or Jaina.  Tyrande has this interesting storyline with Elune and vengeance, and Elune deciding to peace out before she gets it because she chose vengeance over her people's souls.  Saurfang fought in war after war, saw his son raised by the Lich King, and outed your waifu from the horde in one on one challenge.  Jaina got more story development in BFA than sylvanas, and is way better for it.  Haha.  The scenario in her head was really interesting.  On the other hand, we've been dealing with only half of Sylvanas this whole time.  A plot device they made up just to redeem her.  OoOooOoh interesting.

This went down as predicted and as it was set up to. People that are shocked or appalled really need to stop expecting World of Warcraft to be some high brow storytelling. It's a high fantasy steampunk playable comic book. It's always going to be big and cheesy, and to be honest, I'm not sure I'd have it any other way at this point.

I haven't been playing very avidly this expansion, but if this is the case, do you happen to have a source? I can't find one, and my Google-Fu is usually up to snuff!

"This is not a time dilation thing where time moves differently."
"Time is percieved differently. Think of a dream. You may sleep for 6 hours but you experience time and events that span a wider range of time, but when you wake up it's just been 6 hours."

I don't know why people keep talking about a timeskip because Blizz have gone out of their way to say this isn't happening and there's no weird time stuff.

this has nothing to do with the pandemic.
The quality of the storytelling has been steadily degrading ever since mid Mist of Pandaria.
And saying that Thrall, tyrande and Jaina are not interesting characters is an absurd statement.
They have such a deep connection to the entire world of warcraft, both through the game and the books!

After content drought, it's not surprising people have expected much more. Sylvanas' story line turned out exactly as many have expected.

And apparently Kel'Thuzad has been serving Jailer all along? Then how Ner'zhul didn't find out about this, he had telepathic link with his minions, also he was the one who called KT to Northrend. There are many problems like these when changing previous lore. Not to mention how they've made Jailer a mastermind behind it all.

ESPECIALLY Thrall above everyone. The others are easily equally developed.

Just in game, his involvement in Hyjal against Archimonde. The original founding of the Horde. How he related to the Alliance like Varrian and Jaina. He literally became the world shaman uniting the forces against Deathwing. Among many other smaller items that he's been woven through over decades.

This is all taken as a nearly life long alliance player! So you can even get all that from the other side of the coin!

I've played since the start of Cataclysm non-stop with just a small break every now and then. I've been completely into the story for all that time and wanted to know everything about everyone. I didn't skip any raid and always had something that I wanted to go for. Now a few months after Shadowlands I just started to lose interest. I didn't enjoy playing anymore and didn't care about the story anymore. I took a long break. Now 9.1 is released and this is the very first time in all those years that I'm not bothered to return to the game and don't even care that this is going to be the first raid I'm going to miss. I'm not complaining everywhere and not suddenly shouting that the game is terrible and stuff like that. But just the fact that this happened now for the very first time in all these years (didn't even happen in WoD) tells me there's definitely something going very wrong right now with WoW. It's not just salty people.

Do you honestly believe this current dev team has the ability and talent to pull off something like that? I think you forget who we are dealing with here. All of the devs that made old WoW so good are long gone, and were replaced by blue-haired diversity hires that have absolutely no clue. This "J-just wait, they'll fix it in the NEXT PATCH" stuff is peak copium. Dead game is dead. That's fine though, because FFXIV is thriving and it is objectively a better game in every aspect (gameplay, STORY, QoL, everything).

That sounds like absolute nonsense. So they will kill off everyone and then revive some all during 9.2. Yeeeea no. The world revamp is almost definitely coming though, but anyone can guess that.

There's a difference between what you're talking about and what people are complaining about. Characters behaving inconsistently and suddenly becoming idiots to go along with the story has nothing to do with fantasy or steampunk or a comic book. It's just plain BAD WRITING. All of the things you listed can have good writing, even mediocre writing. This line of defense/thinking is just ridiculous, if you like the cutscene and the story that's FINE, there's no problem and you're absolutely correct for yourself. You don't need to validate your opinion with some outside "fact" or "this story is like this so it's totally ok for them to do that". If you're enjoying it i'm genuinely jealous of you. I gave it all the chances in the world on my end... it managed to shatter all my worst expectations. And that's just my personal opinion.

You know I kinda went with the whole Jailer is behind it all thing, but when they make him such a NOTHING character it's harder to accept that he had his bland, comically over the top villain with no character or properties, hand in the crafting of the ENTIRE Warcraft story. It just feels like bad fan-fiction and someone's self-insert, except it's not even an over the top cool character like they tend to be, just someone's buff bald dad with a "cliche villain lines 101" book at hand.

Right now my only hope, my ONLY two hopes that is, are "Denathrius was behind it all, Jailer dies by us, Daddy D smiles in a post-credits scene" and the whole "Sargeras' sword turned into a mourneblade and we fight Azeroth and usher the 10.0 revamp".

By making Jailer "behind it all" W3 campaign barely makes sense now. Scourge (with Kel'Thuzad, supposedly already serving under Jailer) fighting Dreadlords, both forces related to Jailer. And it was in Frozen Throne, after Legion's defeat at Mount Hyjal, so there wasn't another Legion commander present besides Dreadlords. Yet they were all concerned with Legion's defeat, why they would pretend to work for them? There was no one nearby to deceive. The answer is obvious - it was never planned to turn out like this.

Not sure if they would make Denathrius that smart, he's more likely just a high ranking servant. And of course Jailer makes typical mistakes, like letting his enemies go, because "he wants them to submit to his will". Pretty bad for someone who was the mastermind behind so many events. Once more with Diablo comparisons, just like Azmodan he's taunting and underestimating his enemies, and both characters were supposed to be great strategists with some grand plan.

We've seen the crazy Torghast speed runs with players just sprinting to the finish line in a mad dash to the sub-3 minute mark, but today we have... well a different kind of mad dash!
Gitoff has gone for speed AND performance in layer 12, not only going pretty fast in general (perhaps not as fast as the recent 2 minute 56 second run, but definitely faster than most of us can ever hope to go), but also getting the 5-star flawless score as well!   The immediate comment in the video description? "Wasted at least 30seconds on floor 1 :(" Granted, Gitoff did have a nice little 9-minute Momentum buff ready before entering the run, but that's preparation for you!

The final hotfixes of the week focus on Shards of Domination tuning.
      July 30 (Source)
      Items and Rewards
Shards of Domination [With weekly maintenance in each region] Blood Link – The damage and healing amount has been increased at all ranks by 20%. [With weekly maintenance in each region] Winds of Winter – The amount of damage and healing stored by the Winds has been increased at all ranks by ~45%. Developers’ note: The difference between the three Rune Words for the Shards of Domination system is bigger than we want it to be. We have identified and fixed a bug in Winds of Winter which was preventing some damaging and healing abilities from counting towards its total, and we have retuned Winds of Winter and Blood Link so that the relative power between Rune Word bonuses is more balanced. Jotungeirr, Destiny's Call will now reset its cooldown at the end of boss encounters. Fixed an issue where Ticking Sack of Terror could trigger more than intended in the presence of multiple trinkets.

As the WoW team mentioned in their statement, they have been removing references "that are not appropriate for our world". While we've noticed the /spit emote change on the BCC PTR, most/all of the other content removal seems to be centered on references to Alex Afrasiabi, who was talked about in the Activision Blizzard lawsuit. Today we'll take a look at some of the things already removed from the game and some that remain, as the removal seems to be an ongoing process.
First off we have many references already removed, with the Fras Siabi and Foror names being replaced by Ezra Grimm and Nostro. There's many more items, NPCs etc. related to the two names above and others, which you can check out over on Wowhead. The most notable NPC change, however, is the one that received immediate retribution from players when news of the lawsuit broke, as Field Marshall Afrasiabi is now Field Marshall Stonebridge. For a longer list of some of the items that have been removed, check out Wowhead's article here.

      Source: Wowhead.
However, it seems the work is still ongoing, as there are some references that have not been addressed yet, or some that didn't quite go through completely, like the below. You can see the while the NPC's name remains problematic, it is actually changed in the chat window when he speaks:

      Source: MrGraffio.
While many references to Fras Siabi have been removed from Stratholme, like the mini-boss, quest etc, at least one remains:

      Source: Thekingchem.
And then there's this very specific one, which might have even gone completely missed if yuvalal hadn't spotted it, as Foror is mentioned in a conversation between two NPCs in the Escape from Durnholde Keep/Old Hillsbrad Foothills Caverns of Time dungeon:

      Source: yuvalal.

Clearly the removal of references is still ongoing, and even the ones missed above may already be removed from the game when you read this, as Blizzard have a lot of them to go through.

Blizzard announced some nerfs for Shards of Domination set bonuses recently. They even made it live briefly, but have been reverted, as the devs didn't want to proceed with the change.
Further Shard adjustments will be made in the coming days, but they don't want to nerf them now that many players have obtained and upgraded them.

Shards of Domination Earlier this week, a change to the power of Shards of Domination set bonuses (e.g. Chaos Bane) was briefly applied to the live game. We are no longer planning to proceed with that change at all. We may make further adjustments in the coming days, but we will not reduce the power of Shards now that many players have earned and upgraded them.
