All World of Warcraft Expansion Durations: WoW Turns 18, Shadowlands Turns 2

World of Warcraft celebrates another birthday today, as it is now 18 years old! Its 9th expansion looming just around the corner and the current one preparing to depart, it seems Shadowlands didn't end up being the longest running piece of WoW content, despite many players expecting it to be prior to the Dragonflight release date announcement.

So let's take another look at the expansion durations and maybe even pick our favorites down in the comments as well!

1. Battle for Azeroth

1.jpg

2 Years, 3 Months, 9 Days (832 Days Total)

We see BfA at the top here once again, outstripping the long-time record holder Vanilla by quite a bit. The expansion was certainly a controversial one, and started the Sylvanas-centric storyline that lead us to Shadowlands. In my opinion BfA squandered a lot of potentially good storylines, Azshara and N'Zoth in particular (and even the faction conflict could have been done much better), but it wasn't all bad and some players are looking back at it more fondly after Shadowlands.

2. Vanilla WoW

2 Years, 1 Month, 24 Days (784 Days Total)

The one that started it all, was even remade as WoW Classic, and is actually currently running as the Season of Mastery (for a little while yet). If we added all of those together, Vanilla would still be the longest running piece of WoW content to date, and presuming Classic Era realms continue indefinitely, it will always be! We can't really compare this one to the others, as it's the one that started it all and will stand on its own forever. Happy 18th birthday!

3. Mists of Pandaria

3.jpg

2 Years, 1 Month, 18 Days (779 Days Total)

While it was a controversial expansion at the time (due to to the perceived child-friendly theme/pandas), today it is very much looked upon as one of WoW's highlights and even served as inspiration for much of Dragonflight. Throne of Thunder and Lei Shen in particular are still considered some of the best raid content to date, and the expansion's aesthetic was praised even when the expansion was not, only receiving more compliments since. I'll admit, I was one of the Panda-deniers, as it's one of only two expansions I skipped almost in their entirety (I'll let you guess which the other one was), but have enjoyed it very much since then.

4. Wrath of the Lich King

5.jpg

2 Years, 24 Days (754 Days Total)

Many players' favorite period in WoW, WotLK was the first expansion to push a very strong narrative, and focus on the final villain throughout the entire expansion, giving the final confrontation atop Icecrown Citadel a lot more weight.  The story is very tightly connected to the Shadowlands one, and the inspiration of the expansion-long villain arc is certainly very evident. WotLK will probably go down as the high watermark in many players' memories, and it was factually the time when the game had the most players - and you can even replay it right now in Wrath Classic!

5. Shadowlands

2 Years, 5 Days (735 Days Total)

Shadowlands did manage to end up quite high on the list, despite only having two major content patches, as the pandemic affected a lot during the expansion. The wrap up to the Jailer's storyline left many players... let's say disappointed, as the retconned single most important character in WoW history didn't have a particularly special ending and just died like every other raid boss so far. Certainly one of the game's worst villains, he and Shadowlands did seem to push Blizzard into somewhat more light themes and a return to the adventure-style narrative and less of the cosmic ending of everything/permanent war stuff we've seen in the past, well,  6 years or so. The final afterlife judgement of Shadowlands is yet to be determined, as we need some space to get a better picture, but it's not looking good for the Jailer and co. at the moment.

6. Legion

7.jpg

1 Year, 11 Months, 14 Days (714 Days Total)

Standing alongside Wrath of the Lich King, this is most players' favorite WoW expansion, as we saw the culmination of the Burning Legion storyline unfold. With its extremely generous amount of content, Suramar as possibly the peak of intertwined zone and story design, and a... ahem, "passable" ending (no, I can't forgive random Sargeras cloud out of nowhere, no matter how awesome the cinematic was), it's still definitely one of WoW's best.

7. The Burning Crusade

4.jpg

1 Year, 9 Months, 28 Days (667 Days Total)

The first ever expansion, it opened up so many new avenues for the game to go in, and showed us how to fly in World of Warcraft. It also opened the doors to so many retcons - space goats on spaceships and all. I still love it very much, as it was my favorite time in the game.

8. Cataclysm

6.jpg

1 Year, 9 Months, 18 Days (658 Days Total)

While revamping the old world was a brilliant move, the expansion itself wasn't/isn't that popular, with a rather anticlimactic ending in the Dragon Soul raid. Spine of Deathwing may be one of the most frustrating raid encounters to date as well (although it's also still one of the best ideas ever), and we might be seeing a lot more of Deathwing in Dragonflight, if nothing else in flashbacks/memories.

9. Warlords of Draenor

53358-warlords-of-draenor-cinematic-in-4

1 Year, 9 Months, 17 Days (656 Days Total)

As a large part of WoD was scrapped, we never got to see the expansion as it was intended, but the introduction to player housing through garrisons was very welcome, and is definitely one of the ideas that should be iterated on come future expansions. Warlords may be a little similar to Shadowlands in terms of major content patches, as both seem to have been cut short to make the next expansion better. Here's hoping that means Dragonflight is as good as Legion!

And so here we are at WoW's 18th birthday with its 9th expansion 5 days away and looking very promising. Here's to another 18 years!

What about BC (Burning Crusades)? that came out right after vanilla.

It's right there at No7 if that's what you mean.

WotLK was it for me. That was the first xpac where I dove into raiding and went from a casual player to a hardcore. I loved everything about it and look back on that time fondly. I can't say I hated any xpac but WoD and MoP were the lowest on my list. WoD just felt unfinished (which was apparently for good reason which I just learned) and MoP was very pretty but I just never got pulled into it like other xpacs.

Blizzard posted a new cinematic coming in patch 10.2.7, featuring the "radiant song" related to the Wat Within, Jaina, Alleria, and a certain Mage we haven't seen in a while. Of course the Dark Heart itself is at the center of the cinematic, so let's take a look.
    • By Starym
We have a big and mixed batch today, from 10.2.6's raid and dungeon improvements, to legendary item upgrade fixes, the Amber Skitterfly Trading Post mount working properly, as well as Cataclysm Classic archaeology site removals, Season of Discovery class tuning, and plenty more!
      May 1 (Source)
      Dungeons and Raids
Aberrus (Awakened) Fixed an issue that caused Thadrion to continually cast Unstable Essence after the encounter had concluded. Nokhud Offensive Addressed a Primalist Thunderbeast issue where Thunderstrike’s target is not correctly reflected in the unit frame. Items
Amber Skitterfly should now appear in the Mount Collection for players who purchased it from the Trading Post. Legendary items can now be upgraded as intended on the Awakened track. Fixed a bug preventing legendary item upgrades from receiving appropriate stone/crest discounts. Quests
Fixed a bug that sometimes caused the world quest “Zaqali Elders” to fail to start. Cataclysm Classic
Archaeology digsites that appear in Uldum, Twilight Highlands, and Hyjal once players hit 450 Archaeology should no longer appear until the zones are accessible on official Expansion Launch. Paladin Fixed an issue with Seals of Command where Seal of Righteousness could trigger too many procs when it hits multiple targets. Season of Discovery
Hunter Raptor Fury now increases the damage done of Raptor strike and Mongoose Bite by 10% per stack (was 15%). The Beast Mastery rune now increases pet damage by 10% (was 20%). Shaman The Burn rune now also grants a significant bonus to spell power when Flametongue Weapon is imbued on your weapon. Rolling Thunder now has a 50% chance to trigger (was 30%). Fixed a bug causing overload procs to not add a charge to Lightning Shield when the Shaman has the Rolling Thunder rune active. Warlock Invocation now also applies to Unstable Affliction. Invocation damage can now deal critical strikes if the Warlock also has the Pandemic rune active.

Here we are taking a look at the very first week of Season 4. Mythic+ didn't have quite the same level of upheaval as raids, but it did get a new dungeon rotation and some class changes, so let's dive into the results.
      Warcraft Logs Points
The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
Augmentation and Fire continue their ever-struggle at the top, with the Evoker coming out on top, just barely. The top 3 basically remained unchanged from last season, with Shadow sticking to bronze, but we do see a change immediately after that, with Destruction rising 4 spots. Outlaw remains stable as well, only droping  one spot, but we have a big change beneath it, as Frost Mage busts 10 spots up to claim 6th. Subtlety is climbing its way back from the very low 19th it sat in during Season 3, claiming the most-improved award with its 12 spot leap! Elemental gained 5 spots in 8th, while Arms is one of only two specs that remained stable in the top 10, followed by Demonology losing 3 spots in 10th. The two A's of Affliction and Assassination still find themselves down in the bottom 3, this time joined by a different Hunter, as Survival takes Marksmanship's place.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
Fire holds on to it's throne in the generalist bracket, holding both Augmentation and Shadow at bay. Subtlety sits even higher here, moving 11 spots up into 5th, just behind its fellow Rogue, which remains stable in 4th. The Warlocks join the Rogues in pairing up, with Destruction moving a huge 14 spaces up into 6th! Frost Mage is also much improved, and we find two Fyr'alath wielders at the end of the top 10.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Raw DPS U.GG DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks.
Destruction makes its way to the very top in the raw DPS charts, gaining 6 spots and eclipsing its fellow Warlock. Shadow makes a small one spot move up, while Beast Mastery makes a huge one, 10 spots up in 4th, followed by an equally impressive Elemental with 7 up. We find the former No.1 down in 6th, followed by a rising Windwalker and Marksmanship, with the Hunter gaining 11 spots. Frost Mage "only" gains 8, just ahead of Arms, which closes out the top 10. We have three A's at the bottom here, but that's just due to Augmentation's logging errors, so it's actually Frost DK that joins the bottom 3.
Mythic+ All Keystone DPS rankings by u.gg.

      All Percentiles Tank (Points)
The tanks are quite stable as usual, but we do see Blood take 2nd away from Paladin, and that's pretty much it. Vengeance pulls even further away, as it continues to dominate.
Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Healer (Points)
Healers actually got some class tuning with the new season, and we see a new No.1 as a result, with Druid coming out on top. Paladin and Preservation are also much-improved, both moving 2 spots up, which is a very big move with only 7 specs present. Shaman finds its way to the bottom, joined by Holy Priest, as both find themselves on the losing side of that 2-spot jump.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs and u.gg. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides, as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

Another Trading Post rotation has come, as May brings a lot of flower-themed items, two mounts, two pets, a butterfly back customization, and a lot more. MrGM dives into everything in the Trading Post, including the returning items that were skipped in the official preview.
The Amber Skitterfly is a little bugged in the game at the moment, as it throws up a Lua error when selecting it (with players even reporting not receiving the mount when buying it), but there's plenty more to get, from the Royal Swarmer mount, to a pretty cool cape, and plenty of returning cosmetics as well.
And if you missed it and prefer images instead, you can also check out the official preview here.

Grimtusk Fishing Hole, one of the requirements to unlock Taivan, is available this week on live servers!
Players who are working on unlocking Good Boy's Leash probably know the Grimtusk Fishing Hole has not been available since the first week of Patch 10.2.6. However, it is available now for the whole week, so you can complete it to get credit towards Taking From Nature.

Head to the Fyrakk Assault area in Azure Span (59 34) and complete the Net Worth quest offered by Gruff Fisher.
If you can't see the quest chances are you don't have access to Ice Fishing.
I'm not really an avid fisher myself, but one player suggests you should have the Secret Fishing Spots  first before completing this quest, but those farming Taivan will possibly know.
Ice Fishing (available at Renown 6 with Iskaara Tuskarr) requires you to craft an Iskaaran Ice Axe. To do that, you must loot Pickaxe Blade at 19 24 in Azure Span. If you're using TomTom here are the exact coords where you'll find the item:
      /way #2024 19 24
Check the Wowhead comments section for more details.
