wow Blackrock Foundry Item Level Change

A hotfix is going live this week that will increase the item level of every Blackrock Foundry drop by 5 item levels.

Item levels will now be as follows:

LFR - 650 655

Normal - 665 670

Heroic - 680 685

Mythic - 695 700

The original post is available here:

We are preparing to deploy a hotfix next week that will increase the item level of all raid drops from all difficulties of the Blackrock Foundry raid.

The main purpose of this change is to ensure that killing new bosses in the Blackrock Foundry raid feels appropriately rewarding. We are finding that groups coming out of a couple of months in Highmaul could often have an average item level that was just barely shy of the loot dropped by the appropriate difficulty in Foundry. A core part of the experience of progressing through a new raid tier lies in the sense that even if you didn't manage to kill a particular boss this week, the upgrades your raid group gathered along the way will make things smoother and improve your chances the following week.

This change will be retroactive, affecting existing items that players may have in their possession. Thus, instead of an item level range of 650/665/680/695 for Raid Finder/Normal/Heroic/Mythic Foundry, the loot awarded will now be item level 655/670/685/700 respectively. At the same time, we will be increasing the item level of the new highest-tier crafted and Apexis vendor items by 5, in order to keep their power unchanged relative to the Foundry raid itemization.

A few comments in response to some posts so far.

First, I wouldn't read much into the use of the word "tier" in the post - it's being used as a synonym for "zone" in this case. The point stands regardless: When you go through a series of learning attempts and wipes to defeat a new boss for the first time, you expect a commensurate reward for doing so. Many players coming out of 2 months in Highmaul were in a situation of having to work to learn and defeat new bosses that dropped loot of roughly the same quality as what they already were wearing. That isn't satisfying and doesn't allow for much power progression.

Second, the primary point of this change is not to nerf Foundry encounters. If that were the goal, it would have been much simpler to simply nerf the encounters, and we'd taken a more surgical approach to specific encounters. The aim is strictly to improve the reward side of the difficulty:reward ratio.

To use an example, consider a guild that primarily does Normal mode content and eventually progresses into Heroic. This guild may have been 6/7N Highmaul by early January; they ventured into Heroic and killed 2-3 bosses there, and then went back and finished off Mar'gok on Normal. Along the way, they also got some item level 670 loot from garrison mission caches. Now, Foundry comes out. Just because this group killed a couple of Heroic Highmaul bosses after two months in the zone doesn't suddenly make them a Heroic guild - they will, appropriately, begin in Normal Foundry. But their average item level with mostly 655 items (some 661 warforged), and some 670 items from Heroic Highmaul, is likely around 661 or 662 as a raid group. And that simply doesn't leave much room for meaningful reward. And replacing a 670 non-set piece with a 665 set piece is likely a power upgrade, but also does not feel particularly satisfying. You can change the difficulties in the example above, and we see the exact same situation with Heroic guilds coming into Heroic Foundry with an average item level in the 675+ range, which again didn't leave much room for improvement.

(Note that this logic really does not apply to Mythic Foundry, but once we're buffing loot from the other difficulties, we must also adjust Mythic in order to keep Mythic drops feeling like an appropriate upgrade over Heroic. Mythic Foundry is still plenty challenging and ranks among the overall hardest raid zones we've designed - an extra few item levels is not going to change that.)

Edit: And yes, the actual stats on the items are of course increasing along with the item level. The point is to improve the actual reward, not smoke and mirrors creating the illusion of one.

Zoopercat from Ask Mr. Robot posted this explanation and some details of what the effects of the item level changes will be over on reddit:

Hi. I'm from Ask Mr. Robot and we just updated all of the BRF items on our site for this week's hotfix. So of course, I've been playing with some cool data to get insights into how this BRF item boost really affects teams. I figured I might as well go the extra step to document how everyone can do this.

  • If you want to see how it affects your own stats, just load your character (you may need to click the green 'update from armory' button if you haven't visited recently). Right under your name is your new iLevel, and towards the bottom you'll see all of your stats. I have instructions & more info here.
  • You can also use our site to estimate how much of a DPS increase you'll get. I have instructions for that on this blog post. You can look everyone up for your team if you'd like too, and estimate the team's increase (with this worksheet).
  • I put some data together at various team iLevel increases to see how much it would affect people. It looks like for the average heroic team, with a 2 iLevel increase overall, DPS will go up by about 3%, healing required on tanks will go down 1-2%, and healing will go up by 2.5 - 3%. Note we have a special metric for tanks.
  • Lastly, there's one caveat - as your iLevel naturally increases, there is a higher chance you have a set bonus. So with this iLevel boost, when estimating DPS you won't magically have set bonuses, so your estimated DPS will likely be a smidge below what the data suggests.

edit: the BoE items (and filters) are now properly showing the +5 iLevels.

What do you think about this change? Are you glad to be able to focus on the bosses in Blackrock Foundry in a more natural progression curve?

For anyone wondering where the ilvl changes are. It's been stated that they are not happening today, they are just happening "this week".

Kinda irks me that guilds that raid tonight (mine included) might not have the ilvl boost which may very well be what is needed to push them to get the next boss or two killed.

Seems a bit odd really! Was wondering when it was coming into play!

The guide focuses on battle pets flipping across multiple realms. The main focus is to buy cheap pets on your realm and resell it for profit on a different one. You can either bring the gold back to your source realm or to a third server to build your own infrastructure.
      Requirements
Time to do the research Initial investment capital Creation of a character on a second server, it costs 1 silver to post a pet in the Auction House,  You can buy a Illustrious Guild Tabard and vendor it to have gold for auctions. Thanks to @Ammako for pointing out. Research
Conduct a research using the Undermine Journal Pick your main server and the server you decide to sell your pets on The best bet are populated realms Pay close attention to the Median Price Compare battle pet prices of your server and the target realm The goal is to find pets that you can buy cheap on your server and resell at a higher price on the target realm. Example: My source server is Illidan (US) and I want to sell pets on Tichondrius (US), so I'm comparing battle pets prices of Illidan and Tichondrius.
      The Guide
After your research's finished, you will have decided, which pet has the highest profit on your target realm and at the same time lowest investment requirements on your source realm Buy pets and learn them Create a new character on the target realm For posting pets in the Auction House, you need 1 Silver per pet auction, so it's a good idea to buy Illustrious Guild Tabard on your main serer and vendor it to have gold for auctions on the target server. Open the Pet Journal, right-click the pet you bought on your source realm and cage it There's an option "Put in Cage" Put the pets in the Auction House After having sold your auctions, you will start making gold on the target realm. This gold should be spent on battle pets, but the other way around Conduct another research based on your target realm This time, your source realm will be your target realm Buy pets on the target realm to resell on either your primary realm or expand to a third realm. You can now start flipping ("ping-ponging") gold between two or more realms. Example: I've bought pets on Illidan (US) and successfully sold them at higher prices on Tichondrius (US). Having aquired enough gold on Tichondrius (US), I can start buying pets, which are sold on Tichondrius cheaper than they are on Illidan and either bring my gold back to Illidan or expand it to multiple other servers.
      Closing Tips
Conducting the research is of vital importance Make screenshots of pets you buy, it makes caging faster The Undermine Journal battle pets page can be accessed from the menu bar on the right
