This Month in World of Warcraft History

World of Warcraft turned 10 last November, and we’re well on our way into year eleven! A lot has happened since the game’s launch, and we thought we’d look back on one of the game’s most memorable bits of May-based history with you.

May 2007—Patch 2.1 introduced The Black Temple, one of the most iconic raids in The Burning Crusade expansion. Players entered the Temple to test out whether Illidan was right when he said they were “NOT PREPARED!”

As expected we're getting a daily dose of hotfixes after the BfA launch and today's feature Azerite Gear traits getting tweaked, end of zone dungeon quest XP getting a significant increase, as well as a lot more profession and quest fixes.
      August 15 (source)
      Azerite Gear
Fixed an issue where the Azerite Trait Reckless Flurry was incorrectly increasing ability damage, in addition to auto attack damage. 7th Legionnaire's Tunic and Honorbound Outrider's Vestments now correctly have an Outlaw Rogue trait. The extra Subtlety Rogue trait has been removed. Fixed an issue where the Azerite Trait Wild Fleshrending was not increasing the damage of Swipe for Guardian Druids. Dungeons
Experience rewarded from end-of-zone dungeon quests has been greatly increased. Fixed an issue where players couldn't complete “Ecological Research” in The Temple of Sethraliss on Normal difficulty. Items
Harlan's Loaded Dice now scales correctly with item level for its spells. Pet Battles
Francois can now be properly summoned and used in Pet Battles by Alliance characters. Fixed a bug that prevented Peachy and Winkle from battling as intended.
        Professions
Archaeology Fixed a bug that caused some digsites near Vigil Hill in Tiragarde Sound from providing fragments as intended. Blacksmithing Crafting the Stormsteel Spear recipe now creates the correct item. Mining Fixed a bug that prevented ore gathered in Kul'Tiras and Zandalar from being stored in certain bags, as intended. Quests
Fixed a bug causing one of the Shadra Betrayers to evade during "The Ancient One". Fixed a bug that caused the Ancient Gong to sometimes become unusable during “Punishment of Tal’aman”. Fixed a bug that made Taelia disappear under rare circumstances on “The Old Knight”. It should be harder to get separated from Rastakhan on "The King's Gambit". “Mine Sweeper” is now easier to locate and obtain. Goblin Mine Technicians aren't the tidiest bunch and may have left an extra Cracked Mine Sweeper in the Saltstone Mine. Players who disconnect before turning in "Dress to Impress" should now be able to properly see Flynn in the Dead Man's Tale. Fixed an issue where players could move during "Rest in the Depths", breaking the channeled spell. The Island Expeditions quest “Notched Coin” can now be turned in to Mili Wanderbrew. On “Return to Gloom Hollow”, players should no longer be able to get into a state where Titan Keeper Hezrel will not move. Previous Patch 8.0.1 Hotfixes

Gameinformer recently interviewed Game Director Ion Hazzikostas about how Blizzard maintains Warcraft lore. Did you know they had a team of WoW historians? Check out the highlights!
Check out Gamenformer for the full interview!
      Interview Highlights
Blizzard has a team of three lore scholars, Sean Copeland is the historian supervisor of the team. Their role is to field lore and research requests made by their internal dev teams, review publications, participate in creative sessions, and host lore seminars. WoW historians maintain language and pronunciation databases for specific phrases and terms. WoW covers plenty of languages: Eredun, Zandali, or Shath'yar (language of the Old Gods). One of the writers once requested pronunciation for the phrase: "Ak’agthshi ma uhnish, ak’uq shg’cul vwahuhn", which means "Our numbers are endless, our power beyond reckoning!" Alleria made a return in Patch 7.3 and it was up to the historians to track down every place where she was mentioned to ensure they don't do anything inconsistent. In Cataclysm, the final boss was Sinestra. They wanted a red dragon to come and join the players in the fight, ending with a sacrifice that would help players defeat the boss. It would have made sense to include Krasus in the encounter, but they realized he died in a book. Khadgar in the Warcraft Movie was much younger in the film than they had imagined him being at that point in time. In the Burning Crusade, he was depicted much older and had a long beard, so they decided to give him a new model. The goal with WoW Chronicles was to craft a cohesive and complelling guidebook that covers the entire history of the Warcraft universe. Copeland's team believes that continuity exists to enhance the story, not to tie the hands of creators.

Embers of War is a new cinematic released by Blizzard to go with Battle for Azeroth. It's a combination of all cinematics previewed so far including Bwonsamdi, Jaina's return to Kul Tiras, the Horde intro to Zandalar, and the final Battle for Lordaeron cutscene.
Lines have been drawn between the Horde and Alliance, loyalties tested, and the war between the factions has begun in earnest. The race is on to recruit new allies and gather a new powerful resource – Azerite. Will you heed the call of battle?

We have another interesting interview with Principal Exterior Level Designer Gary Platner and In-game Cinematic Project Director Terran Gregory by VG247. Check out the highlights!
Check out the full interview over at VG247.
      Interview Highlights
Alex Afrasiabi designed Battle for Azeroth like it would be the last expansion; they didn't hold back, went for the mega, and seized the day on design. Terran is really sad that gnomes didn't make an appearance in the cinematics, but CGI has its limitations to how many characters can be created. Siege of Lordaeron included more characters than any other Blizzard CGI film before. It's Blizzard's mission to tell the most compelling and emotional story that they can. Making everyone enjoy the story in the same way is an impossible goal. With the release of Warbringers: Sylvanas, Horde players started to show their discontent. There's even been one extreme case of targeted harassment aimed at Christie Golden. Creating a story that revolves around an all-out war required bold decisions. They knew the reactions to the burning of Teldrassil would be passionate, but they did exceed their expectations. Storytelling is about highs and lows. Old Soldier would not have resonated so well without Warbringers: Sylvanas. WoW is a living, breathing game. The team's always looking for ways to improve it. They'll support WoW for as long as the players continue to give them support. From a story perspective, they wondered how great an end WoW would need to have. It's an evergreen franchise that they've maintained like a "carefully-tended bonsai tree."
