Well, Season Five is fast approaching Sanctuary, and the details are as clear as ever. A very complete Season Preview has gone up on Battle.net thanks to Nevalistis. The preview is a great primer for both veterans and newer players since Season 5 is totally reworked from previous iterations.

Patch 2.4.0 is live on the PTR for testing and headed soon to live realms, stuffed to the brim with great new features for Diablo III. For our Seasonal heroes out there, we’ve prepared this guide to Season 5 so you can roll right into a fresh start on day one.

Several changes are coming to Seasons with Season 5, including the removal of Season-exclusive Legendary Items, the introduction of new and varied rewards, and a whole new feature in the form of Season Rebirth. Let’s check it out!

Season Journey Updates

 

The Season Journey feature was introduced in Patch 2.3.0 for Season 4, and we’ve made a few updates in time for Season 5 to begin. The first major change is a direct response to popular player feedback, as we have removed Seasonal Legendaries from the game. All new Legendaries included in Patch 2.4.0 will be made immediately available to be found by players regardless of Season participation.

 

However, we still want there to be item-based rewards as part of the Season experience. We’ve introduced Haedrig’s Gift, a special bundle of Set items you’ll receive on completion of certain stages of the Season Journey. Starting in Chapter 3, three of the objectives in the Season Journey will reward you one of these bags, each containing two pieces of one of your class sets.

By the time you complete all of Chapter 4 of the Season Journey, you should be fully decked out in a full class set! Which set you receive will rotate with each Season and depends on which class of hero you open the gifts on. Each Haedrig’s Gift will be mailed to you and can be retrieved by opening the in-game mail icon in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Be careful, though; each step of the Season Journey will only reward one Haedrig’s Gift (for a total of three bags per Season/one full set of gear), regardless of how many characters you might play in a given Season. Make sure to claim these gifts on the character you want to receive their set!

 

The class sets offered in Season 5 are:

 

  • Barbarian: Might of the Earth
  • Crusader: Thorns of the Invoker
  • Demon Hunter: The Shadow’s Mantle
  • Monk: Monkey King’s Garb
  • Witch Doctor: Raiment of the Jade Harvester
  • Wizard: Firebird’s Finery

New and Updated Conquests

 

Conquests continue to be a staple of the Seasonal experience, and we’ve updated some of our existing Conquests and added some new ones based on features included in Patch 2.4.0.

 

If you’re looking for an entirely new challenge, you should try tackling the Masters of the Universe / Masters of Sets Conquest! Designed around the new Set Dungeon feature, this Conquest requires you to complete 8 different Set Dungeons of your choosing.

The Thrill / Super Human Conquests previously asked players to push the limits of their gear without equipping a class set. With the introduction of more powerful two-piece sets, we’ve decided to up the ante on this challenge by tweaking the rules. In Season 5, you’ll need to complete these Conquests without using a single set item. Save up those Ancients and well-rolled Legendaries—you’re going to need them!

We’ll continue rotating through different challenging Conquests in Season 5, and you can expect to see the return of a few favorites. Sprinter / Speed Racer makes a triumphant return, as well as Avarice / Avaritia. Finally, Years of War / Dynasty has been updated for the latest levels of class power, now requiring Greater Rift Level 55 Solo to complete.

New Cosmetic Rewards

 

Starting with Season 5 and moving forward, we will provide a variety of cosmetic rewards, and what type of reward you will receive will rotate with each new Season.

In addition to the usual exclusive Portrait Frames and pieces of the Conqueror’s Transmogrification set, you will also receive either a pair of wings, an exclusive pennant, or a non-combat pet. For Season 5, players who reach level 70 will receive the Wickerman pet.

Season Rebirth

 

Last, but certainly not least, is the addition of a totally new Season-exclusive feature called the Season Rebirth. This allows you to take any non-Seasonal character you have and instantly transform them into a Seasonal character, ready to jump straight into the action on day one.

 

Any of the gear or items equipped on your character or in your inventory will be automatically stripped from the hero and mailed to your non-Seasonal characters, similar to the rollover process that occurs with your stash space when a Season ends. In addition, your character will be reduced to level 1, ready to start the process as though they were freshly created!

 

Accomplishments like achievements, crafting recipes learned, artisan levels, or unlocked stash tabs will be left behind as part of your non-Seasonal progression. However, personal records like your character name or time played will be retained and carry on through your Seasonal adventures.

 

There are a few things to keep in mind when using Season Rebirth:

 

  • Gear mailed to your non-Seasonal characters will only be available for reclamation for up to 30 days from the time it is mailed!

  • You may only Rebirth up to three characters per Season.

  • Hardcore characters who have fallen are not eligible to use the Season Rebirth feature.

Q: When does Season 5 start?

 

A: Season 5 will begin Friday, January 15 at 5:00 p.m. PDT in North America, 5:00 p.m. CEST in Europe, and 5:00 p.m. KST in Asia. For assistance with time zones, click here.

 

Q: How long will Season 5 last?

 

A: Starting with Season 5, all seasons going forward will last approximately three months.

 

Q: When are the non-Seasonal Leaderboards being wiped?

 

A: Non-Seasonal Leaderboards are tied to what we call “Eras.” We currently anticipate the next wipe to coincide with the end of Season 4, although this may not be the case for future Seasons.

 

Q: Will Seasons be coming to console?

 

A: Some features on console are best designed for that platform, and the same is true for the PC version of the game. A large part of the fun of Seasons is the entire community rerolling heroes together at the same time. Because the offline and disconnected nature of console does not support this style of play, we do not currently have plans to implement Seasons on console.

 

Q: What will happen to older Seasonal records?

 

A: As we continue on into additional Seasons, we will no longer be able to store some personal Seasonal records. While Season 5 will store your personal bests for all Seasons to date, at some point in a future Season, we will begin removing old personal bests, beginning with Season 1. This will be true regardless of your personal participation in previous Seasons. We will have more information on this change at a later date.

 

Seasonal Leaderboard records are not being cleared, and will remain archived both in game and on our website.

      In December, Nevalistis did a live Q/A on Facebook with Senior Game Designer Joe Shely. Some follow-up questions were received for questions answered and after reading all feedback, the team decided to dig deeper into some of the topics.

      In December 2016, we had a short Facebook Live Q&A where we answered questions from players all around the globe. Some of these questions came from our social media or community forums, and they spanned many different interests.
      We received some follow-up questions for a few answers we provided. After reading through your feedback, we’ve looked at the top three most discussed topics from that Q&A and dug into them a little deeper.
      Question 1: Are we satisfied with the Paragon system and do we intend to make any changes to it?
      We’re generally satisfied with the Paragon system. It accomplishes two main goals:
      First, Paragon levels allow players to continue gaining experience after reaching level 70 and to devote that experience to offensive and defensive specialties for that character (for the first 800 levels). It is core to Diablo design philosophy that time played translates to character advancement, even if you don't get a new drop in a given play session. As your gear improves and item upgrades become less frequent, this becomes especially important. This is why Paragon is (essentially) uncapped. Even when you miss the 15-minute threshold on a Greater Rift, you're still rewarded with experience toward your next Paragon level. And each Paragon level earned makes that next rift just a little bit easier.
      Second, Paragon experience is shared across all your characters in the same play mode, encouraging you to try all the different builds and play styles Diablo has to offer while progressing your current main character. This also allows for some progress to be maintained when a powerful Hardcore character dies, taking a little of the sting out of that loss.
      We believe that the purpose of the Paragon system aligns well with the goals it’s accomplishing, so we have no plans to make further changes to the Paragon system at this time.
      Question 2: Do we have any plans to create new systems to compete with Greater Rifts as end-game activities?
      While we don’t have plans to add a new system that occupies the same design space as Greater Rifts, we do have some new features coming in the future that should offer alternative challenges or improve your existing gameplay experiences.
      For players looking to compete on a completely level playing field, Challenge Rifts will offer new builds and layouts to master on a frequent basis. They support leaderboards, so you can compare your time with your friends and players across the region. Challenge Rifts will be coming to PC, Xbox One, and PS4, and we’ll have more information for you once this feature is closer to release.
      We're also dedicated to improving the experience of Greater Rifts, as illustrated by the recent changes to density, tile sets, monsters, and populations (See the 2.4.3 Patch Notes for full details). Among the many changes, you will no longer encounter large areas devoid of monsters, get jumped by Elite packs at the entrance of a floor, or die to that Lacuni you killed in midair.
      Question 3: Why is it that changes we make do not heavily impact the meta game? Do we have the meta game in mind when designing new items or powers?
      Community Manager’s note: This question wasn’t explicitly asked in the FAQ, but it embodies a lot of the feedback questions we received after the Q&A.
      When introducing new Legendary items such as The Barber or increasing the damage output of the Barbarian's Wrath of the Wastes set in a patch, our goal is to increase the variety of builds and play styles seeing use in the live game. If we simply buffed Wrath of the Wastes to outperform the other Barbarian sets, or left The Barber in the dominant place it occupied for much of the 2.4.3 PTR cycle , we would simply be creating a new dominant set or item that players would feel pressured to use.
      By instead improving some of the lowest performing sets and introducing new legendary items, we aim to encourage new builds or rediscover the nuances of a classic set. This may or may not change the state of the meta; that decision is largely up to what the community decides is best—whether in practice, by theorycrafting, or some combination of the two. Our design choices aren’t made with the intention to determine the meta, and we strive to avoid making new additions feel too good to pass up.
      As always, we’ll be observing these changes in the wild environment of the live game and making adjustments as needed in future patches.

      These hotfixes should not require you to download a new patch. Some of the hotfixes below will go live the moment they are implemented while others may require restarting the game to go into effect. Please keep in mind that some issues cannot be addressed without a client-side patch. Also note that changes to certain abilities will not be reflected in its tooltip until a patch is issued.

      Rainbow Portrait is coming to consoles with the patch that brings Seasons, The rest blue posts deal with The Barber, Juggernaut affix and the duration of the Darkening of Tristam event.
      Rainbow Portrait on Consoles
      The rainbow portrait isn't currently available on consoles. The implementation of portraits will come with the patch that brings Seasons to consoles (Season 10 maybe). Until then, you can earn portraits through the Darkening of Tristam event.

      So, with the 1.15/1.16 patch, will this portrait drop now on the consoles?
      Sorry for the delay in response, but I had to do some digging on this one. On console, Sir William does not currently drop the Whimsyshire portrait. The reason why is because full portrait integration isn't actually active yet for the Ultimate Evil Edition on PS4/XB1, though a couple of portraits can be earned through the Darkening of Tristram event (see here for more information on that). Full integration will be coming with the patch where Seasons become available on console.

      If this is something you guys would like to see in the future once portrait integration is in, I'll be happy to pass along that feedback to our console development team!

      The Barber Nerfs
      A player has submitted photographic evidence that The Barber has been nerfed. Here's a blue post related to it.

      I'm using it with a build I'm working on and I like it even though it's not doing insane amounts of godly damage like on the ptr.
      Glad you're liking the revamped Barber! As more people play with this item, there will doubtless be interesting new builds they create that are worth trying out.

      It's also worth noting that with the changes to certain items in patch 2.4.3, we've seen players talk about how these compare to the most powerful Legendary and Set items available in the game. 

      To clarify, our goal when updating Legendary items is to open up new build opportunities for players to explore. Along with this, it's important to note that not every item is designed to push the current best Greater Rift level. Some will be better for speed farming builds, and others will simply be a means to create fun novelty builds (like Manajuma's Way, for instance).

      There's more than one way to compare an item's relative worth, and more than one way to incorporate it into various builds. Even so, I'm glad to see people trying the new items out and sharing their experiences. It helps, for sure!
      Is it really not guaranteed elemental damage though?
      As for the weapon not rolling the additional damage modifier, that does seem buggy - I will pass this on, and thanks for reporting it!

      Juggernauts in Greater Rifts
      They now have lots of health and resistance to damage, intended? The information below was taken from the latest patch notes.
      2.4.3 Patch Notes - Juggernaut
      Juggernaut New enemy affix Juggernaut monsters are permanently immune to crowd control effects, but move more slowly than normal monsters Along with this change, enemies with this affix take 30% more damage from all sources Only a rare Elite enemy can be a Juggernaut (Source)
      There may even be a visual indicator for affixes on elites in the works!

      OK I got it - immunity to cc means a whole bunch of procs that raise damage or debuff won't work.
      Just wanted to clarify for those who haven't seen the new Juggernaut affix in-game or read our recent patch notes that this is correct. As with all enemy affixes, some will be easier for certain builds to handle while the inverse is true for others. 

      One of our goals when adding new enemy affixes is to broaden the types of enemy variety you see in the game and the kinds of challenges you'll face. This helps achieve both of those goals while (hopefully) encouraging you to think more tactically in certain cases as a CC-dependent character.
      Damn! Will have to actually look at affixes now - it would be nice to have a visual indicator on the elite.
