Legion Alpha: Holinka on PvP Changes

Holinka recently took to the US forums in order to discuss and explain a number of current and planned changes that might be hitting the Alpha servers soon.

The latest developer update is a new addition in a long line of constant feedback from the Blizzard team. In his post, Holinka goes through the new additions to the game, such as the honour system, as well as how they are planning on working with class balance. Take a look for yourself:

Blizzard Icon Dev Update from Holinka

Hey everyone,

First off, I want to thank you for taking part in this Alpha. Your participation and feedback has proven invaluable over the past week and we already feel things are moving in the right direction.

We want to share some of our thoughts about PvP and the Alpha process as well as some of the changes we've been making in response to your feedback.

The Honor System
The new Honor System is Legion's major PvP feature and so it is important to test the full experience during Alpha. We wanted to gauge what it felt like to earn honor through Battlegrounds and Arenas then unlock PvP talents over time. For the most part, we think it feels pretty good, but have definitely heard the feedback that people would like their first 6 talents faster.

Battlegrounds and Skirmishes
When we initially launched Alpha, Skirmish queues were disabled so that we could focus people in Battlegrounds. We knew that concurrency would eventually drop off a bit and Skirmishes would become a better option for people to PvP. Skirmish queues tend to pop very quickly because there are less people required to start them and they are not affected by faction population balance. Looking forward, it's likely that we'll temporarily disable Skirmishes when we expand the number of people in Alpha to once again focus feedback on Battlegrounds. But for now, Skirmishes may be the best way for you to play the game.

Class Balance
This is a tricky time for PvP class balance in the Alpha. At this time, the Class Designers are primarily focused on implementation and haven't had the opportunity to do a balance pass on many abilities, talents and artifact traits. We've been playing the Alpha right along side you and realize there are a number of classes that feel overtuned. The good news is that this gives us a great opportunity to try many of the new PvP specific tuning knobs we have at our disposal. Going through this process has been super valuable, calling out situations where these systems were falling short. We really appreciate you being patient as we sort them out.

Damage
Damage in the Alpha certainly feels high. We like fast paced gameplay, but some specializations feel especially bursty. In some cases, this extreme damage is caused by a bug, like we recently encountered with Assassination Rogues and their artifact trait, Surge of Toxins. But it could just be that a spec hasn't been tuned down appropriately yet. In cases like this, we may reduce a spec's overall damage by decreasing the amount of Agility, Intellect or Strength in their PvP stat templates. But It may also be the case that just one or two spells are a problem. If you encounter a spell doing an extreme amount of damage, please let us know and we'll correct it for PvP.

We've also started adjusting some of the healing spells on non-healer specs. We know this is a big point of concern for the community. We'd like to see the rate of damage slow down a bit but self-healing needs to be reigned in as well in order for that to feel good. We'll be adjusting individual self-healing spells where necessary.

Tanks
Tanks are certainly overtuned on Alpha right now when it comes to survivability and damage in PvP. We've reduced their damage and their health pools but we've also started to reduce the effectiveness of their mitigation. We'll continue to monitor tank performance and adjust them accordingly. We think making tanks a fun option in PvP has potential, but it means killing a tank in a reasonable amount of time must be possible.

Healers
Healers do not feel strong enough on Alpha to be fun. In the next build, we'll be increasing the healing capability of many of the healing specs to ensure their throughput can keep up with damage.

Again, we want to thank you for your patience and commitment when it comes to testing the game. Your feedback has been tremendous and we really appreciate all you've done to help make Legion an amazing expansion.

The Warcraft universe Cosmology chart is one of the of the most important pieces of art we have, as it showcases the basic and primal forces of everything, so it's no surprise it's gotten quite a few makeovers recently. AJT_GameArt is back once again, improving his previous rendition once again, with some better images and characters associated with the various cosmic forces, including new Shadowlands figures!
You can check out the reddit thread below for different versions of the piece, with and without the text, but it's

Raid buff scrolls won't be returning and Blizzard also nerfed class buffs down to 5% in Shadowlands, so the removal of the Engineering battle rez was something entirely possible to give classes with combat-resurrection capabilities more prominence in raids.
Fortunately, it is not going anywhere. Disposable Spectrophasic Reanimator was added in the recent Shadowlands Beta Build, and the item can be used by Engineers for combat resurrection. It still comes with the chance to backfire and kill the caster instead of resurrecting an ally.

Shadowlands comes with tons of new customization options, but some of them are locked behind specific skin tones, hairstyles, and more, which is an apparent downside of the feature.
Reddit user Nihux noticed that if you want to use Faces 16-30 on Human Females, you will be locked to a specific set of skin tones, and the games won't allow you to use those faces with other skin tones, and vice versa.

Faces 1-15 are locked to the first set of skin tones.

Faces 16-30 are locked to the second set of skin tones.

Faces 31-45 are locked to the third set of skin tones.
The restriction also applies to the new hair colors that can only be used with the new hairstyles, as pointed out by  Reddit user Katur.
The restriction is in place for other customization options such as scars tied to specific eye color options. When you pick a different scar, your eye color will change automatically, and vice versa.

Reddit user RlySkiz says it's due to age of the WoW engine that cannot handle texture recoloring while it is running, so every hairstyle + hair color or face has their own model/texture that loads. There isn't a blank model that gets colored based on what option you pick.

In the latest blog post, Blizzard outlined changes to the Recruit A Friend system coming in the Shadowlands pre-patch.
Starting with the pre-expansion patch, characters created by a recruited friend will receive a 30-slot bag (Extra-Spacious Knapsack) upon completing Exile's Reach, the new player experience. Note that characters recruited before the Shadowlands pre-patch will not receive Extra-Spacious Knapsack.
Experience Boosts that are currently active for recruited players and recruiters who party together will be removed before the launch of Shadowlands. Other rewards that come with the program remain unchanged.

      RECRUIT A FRIEND UPDATES
With the upcoming release of Shadowlands and the leveling adjustments that come with it, we’re making a few changes to Recruit A Friend. Beginning with the release of the pre-expansion patch, characters who are created by a recruited friend* will receive a unique 30-slot bag—the Extra-Spacious Knapsack—upon completing their adventure in Exile’s Reach as a part of the new player experience. The additional experience boost that currently exists for recruited players and recruiters who party together will be phased out before the launch of Shadowlands. All other rewards available with the Recruit A Friend program will continue to be available for recruiters.
*Players who are recruited prior to the release of the Shadowlands pre-expansion patch will not receive the new 30-slot bag, the Extra-Spacious Knapsack.

We're looking at some terrifying texture/model bugs from the Shadowlands Beta, shared by Software Engineer Matt Yan on Twitter.
The first bug makes the Worgen model look like a Trogg and second one is really difficult to describe, and I don't even want to know what happened to the poor Pandaren.
