Weirdest ban?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I got this 24hr ban, a ban that imposed BANG ON WEDNESDAY so I was made to miss an entire as my guild kills Archi that day.  I contacted Blizz to question my ban and asked that if I really had to take this ban then could it please start 24hrs later. My supposed Offence happened many months back so I really didn't see the difference if I took the ban months later on a Wednesday or a Thursday. However, they said the decision was final, this made it seem like a rather spiteful punishment!

I went to the Blizz forums to seek further opinions on my situation and explained it all politely, my posts were pulled down and I was banned from posting, I contacted Blizz again this time on live chat and was told "no more discussion, the matter is closed", needless to say, I started to feel like I was a Jew in 1940's Germany or maybe in modern day North Korea.

Now here's the worst part and the part no one believes when I tell them, my guild obviously believe it as they were seeing the whole thing as it unfolded. I was banned for having the word/name "Jim" as my name/part of my name, the character is a healer and irl people call me Jim so it seemed a great name to have Jim will fit it shortened to Jimllfixit. Now, there used to be a long time ago a TV show called Jim'll fix it (you can still find it on youtube I had to look it up) but anyway who cares, so what if your name is the same as some old TV show right?  According to Blizz one of the hosts was a man called Peter and Peter was ACCUSED of indecent behaviour. So I got banned for Jim, because of a man called peter..

I mean, how much digging and twisting did Blizz have to do to arrive at all this and then pin it on me and decide it was worthy of a rather spiteful ban? I was in a guild with a guy called Jackowacko, that seems more like a direct name connection to a man ACCUSED (never charged) with indecent behaviour.  In fact I see a lot of names that should be far more ban worthy compared to that. I was left feeling kind of singled out, like something personal.f3AkOmB.png

Firstly, I'd like to say that we can't really do much to help you here. I can only comment on what I am seeing.

Given that you, no doubt, have looked into this extensively since you were banned, I'm sure we can agree that your claim of being banned for Jim, because of a man called Peter isn't quite right.

The host of Jim'll Fix It was Jimmy Savile, a man who very recently has been at the heart of some of the most shocking child pornography and paedophilia charges the UK has seen, with him being a suspect in 100s of cases. Not quite the description you gave, is it? Also, I'm sure you're aware of this since, as the e-mail states, you live in the UK.

It's entirely possible that numerous people reported your name and this got you banned. I have no idea if this was actually the reason you were banned, since you have added a tiny snapshot of the e-mail, in which we can only see 1 line.

Anyway, it's a 24-hour ban, it's probably already over and there's nothing you can do to rewind time unfortunately. Blizzard won't give you a kill retroactively or anything like that.

I only linked the part of the email relevant. As for  "your claim for being banned for Jim, because of a man called Peter isn't quite right"  isn't that exactly what Blizz wrote in the email :/ ?  Just seems like a very grey area ban,  if David Hasselhoff was accused of indecent behaviour should characters called Nightrider or Baywatch be banned?  As far as I see, Jimmy Saville was never actually charged and with the supposed cover up it all seems like a conspiracy theory, generally, not just my view, so Blizz banned me based on their own theories and beliefs and decided he was guilty and it was all true :/ ? ~

A really bad ban in my opinion, too much grey area in my opinion, and if not, then around 6% of WoW players should also receive bans for any name that can even remotely be linked directly or indirectly to something or someone suspected of indecent crimes.

Very frustrating to lose a reset over this, totally uncalled for, very inconsistent penalties from Blizz.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about this, just be careful with your character naming in the future. Was banned for that as well once... had a Pandaren Monk named "Pedobeer" ...enough said biggrin.png

What you linked shows nothing though. They could be saying this and then stating underneath that you were banned for something related to the show, but not your name. Generally in the past, when people get reported for their name, don't they just get assigned a random name and are forced to change it, unless it is deemed extreme? Also, what realm-type are you on?

The email says what it says, not much else to add. I don't think the name was extreme at all, far from it, in fact it takes a specific point of view to link it to Peter who was accused... I am on a normal PvP realm (Ravencrest) no one in my guild and prety much all the players I know, don't even know who Peter Saville is and never heard of his show Jim'll fix it so I highly doubt it was due to a high number of reports against my name, Rolf Harris hosted a show called 'Animal Hospital', if that was a guild name, I doubt they would be made to name change it even though Rolf was actually convicted not just accused, that is why it seems quite personal.
