From Vengeance(5 man content) to Havoc (raid content) transition

Hello my fellow Demon Hunters,

I have a small problem/situation that I have to overcome / solve during the first weeks of Legion. I think that there are a couple of people who also have the same problem, so I hope that someone has an answer for me.

So here's my situation: Me and 4 other friends are going to run heroic + mythic dungeons in the first couple of weeks in Legion together. We are all in the same guild/raid. In this dungeon farming period I am going to tank (V-DH). My plan was to tank in raid content aswell, but unfortunately the raid lead is in no need of tanks and therefore their only offer was a DPS slot in the raid. This was a no brainer to me: Either I'll play solo as a tank in another raid, or I'll play DPS together with my friends in the raid. So now I am studying everything there is about H-DH aswell. One thing which bothers me, and where I haven't found a specific plan for, was how to balance my gear choices so we as a 5 man group can advance in heroics + mythics quickly with me as a tank, without being handicapped (or at least minimize my handicap) as a DPS when the raids start. Please keep in mind that the raid isn't a hardcore progression guild, but plans to do mythic raids early on.

So my question is: How should I farm my gear? Should I run 50% of the time with Havoc Loot turned on (even when I am tanking) and the other 50%? What am I going to do with my artifact weapon? Get both at 13 first, then focussing on my Havoc Artifact weapons? Or just focus on them, since an unskilled Vengeance Artifact weapon might be enough? My goal is to minimize my handicap, have enough gear for my Vengeance spec in order to run all mythic dungeons and at the same time being prepared for the raids as a havoc. Is this even possible?

Kind regards

It depends on how much work you want to put into this whole thing. If your plan is to play 2-3 hours a day between launch and raid, then you're not going to be very effective in either role and need to pick one and stick with it. If you plan on spending 6-9 hours a day average then making what you want to work is totally doable (I think it will take less time - something like 5-7 a day, but I'm not sure.)

Personally I'm doing basically the same thing as you, Vengance for groups with friends and then Havoc for raid. I'm going to be doing my Veng weapon first and spending only enough points to get my Charred Warblades trait. This only costs 14 traits and should give you enough AP (as long as you do ALL of your dailies/random heroic/order hall stuff/mythics each week) to ALSO get 20 traits in your havoc weapon before raid is released, 20 is exactly what you need for your first two gold traits.

Gearing I'm going to be loot-spec'd as Havoc for 99% of my heroics/mythics. The only time I'll be changing is when the boss has a tanking trinket. If you get gear that is more survivability based for Vengeance then use it, otherwise your normal havoc priority gear will do good enough for Veng.

Again though, double check loot for bosses before you kill it. If the boss doesn't have anything you need for Havoc but does have something solid for Veng, loot-spec for veng. This is, IMO, better then fishing for WF/sockets that you will most likely not get.

Very solid advice.

Gear should be interchangeable between the two apart from trinkets and maybe one or two other items.  Suss out what raid bosses your planning to kill each week and have a note which drops which for yourself to allow for smooth switching of loot spec's.

I am going to play 7-8 hours a day on average, so this should be doable. Regarding the trinket: Are you aiming to get the tanking trinket BEFORE the havoc trinket? And then when you have the tanking trinket, you just try to get the havoc trinket?

Ye, very solid advice, I really appreciate it. And I think that a couple of demon hunters will face this situation (and even other classes / speccs ofc).

If your raid slot is for dps, then get the dps trinket first.  (it wont be bad for tanking, just not optimal)

If boss X drops a tank trinket and doesn't drop a decent dps upgrade for you, loot spec for tanking and cross your fingers.

If boss  Y drops both trinkets, loot spec for dps and fingers crossed.

Good luck with it

Safety not Guaranteed is an English speaking Alliance raiding guild on Emerald Dream. We raid 3 times a week and are mainly focused on mythic raiding.
      Current Progress:
      7/7M, 3/3M, 10/10M, 7/9M ToS, 7/11M Antorus
We are currently recruiting the following classes to progress with us through Antorus:

Melee DPS: DH, DK, Rogue, Warrior, Feral, Enh Shaman
Ranged DPS: Mage, Warlock, Priest, Boomkin, Ele Shaman
      Healer (1): Any class
      Our raiding schedule is:
      - Thursday: 20.00 - 23.00 (server time)
      - Monday: 20.00 - 23.00 (server time)
      - Tuesday: 20.00 - 23.00 (server time)
      Apply here:
Even if we are not actively recruiting your class, we will consider any exceptional applications.
      About us:
Safety not Guaranteed (SnG) was initially formed on horde side by a small group of friends in early MoP, raiding 10man heroic. Later during the expansion we faction changed to Alliance and expanded our roster to a 20man mythic team, where we cleared SoO mythic as a guild. Many of us have been playing together since as early as WotLK, and have friendships with each other that extend outside the game as well.
Our goal ever since the guild was formed has been to progress through content at a steady pace, without hardcore hours, while having a good time together. We aim to clear each tier before the next one is released. In WoD we cleared 7/7M, 10/10M, 13/13M when relevant, and have cleared each tier so far in Legion obtaining most mythic cutting edge achievements, and plan to continue doing so.
      What we offer:
A structured mythic raiding team and raiding times. We start invites 19:45 and begin to clear trash so we can have the first pulls at 20:00 A fair rotation and loot distribution via loot council. We keep spreadsheets! A steady guild with a good community and good guild atmosphere. You may encounter some trolling during your stay. A focused attitude during progression, and relaxed attitude during farm content. We like to chat and have fun, but focus during difficult content. A desire to raid. We often run an extra raid day on the 1st week of a new raid tier. This is 100% optional, but most people are excited to get into a new instance. Additionally we often run some sort of alt raids on fridays (100% optional), and do a lot of mythic+ content within the guild.
      What we want from you:
High attendance. We expect a minimum of 80% attendance, though most of our raiders have near to 100%. We run a small roster to minimize rotation, and want to be able to rely on you. Commitment. We don't want someone who is looking to join, get geared and then leave. We have a 2-3 week trial period during which we will control gearing while we get to know you. Honesty. If you're having problems within the guild, or have real life issues, we'd like to hear rather than you just disappearing. Talk to us. Be prepared! This means reading up on new fights, having consumables (flask, pots, food, runes), gemming and enchanting properly, and being on time! Communication. We want you to know how to communicate both verbally and in writing. We have a guild Discord we use for our raids and other games! Raiding awareness. We want you to not stand in fire, unless it's required... Progression oriented attitude. Everyone makes mistakes, but learning is part of progression, so we value people who continue to improve over time. Understanding. Sometimes, things don't always go smoothly. We may hit a wall on a specific boss for a while, or you may have to sit for someone else during a progression raid. This is part of mythic raiding. We try to treat everyone fairly, and are open to feedback.

      <Fepix – Magtheridon> - Alliance
Sick of pugging, looking for mythic progression, wanting to get into the guild raiding scene or just want an active discord to have a laugh in? Fepix could be the guild for you!
        About us:
Fepix is community raiding guild founded and run by a group of friends. Every Tier our main aim is to get the ahead of the curve and then to progress mythic in a calm and casual environment. Although we always seek to progress and improve as players, we like to maintain a lightheartedness and friendly atmosphere within our community. As a guild we are always eager to assist our community in gearing as well as to allow them to access content they wouldn’t otherwise be able to.
        Weekly Events:
Guild ‘Open’ Raid: (20:00-23:00 realm time Friday)
All guildies are able to sign up to a relaxed raid on a Friday evening - no commitment week to week, just sign up and drop in on any relevantly geared alt to have some fun!
Progression Raiding: (20:00-23:00 realm time Sunday and Monday)
These events are mandatory for all raiders. All raiders and trials are expected to turn up to every raid. We appreciate real life commitments are important however, so it is greatly appreciated for raiders to alert officers beforehand if they are unable to make a raid so that we can update the roster for the night as appropriate.
Guild ‘get shit done’ mythic keystones: (Tuesday evenings)
This is when all our guild groups tend to push keys or do our weekly chests, it will be easy to find a group and have a laugh! However we do have several members that are willing to push keys all week round.
Becoming a Raider:  Aspiring raiders should meet the following requirements:
Reliability – the ability to have high attendance to raids, to arrive promptly at raid time, and should something come up that would stop you attending, to let an officer know ahead of raid time.
Adaptability – the ability to learn from mistakes and to show a bit of initiative in encounters to make those small plays that go above the norm that could potentially aid in the raid's success.
A laid-back personality – the ability to remain calm when you make or others make mistakes.
An off spec or a geared alt – Although this isn't necessary, it will make you slightly more valuable to the raid if you can play an interchangeable role based on the attendance of that raid or the demands of the encounter.
Logs – We would like to see some evidence of performance before we start a formal trial of you, this can take the form of a log from any raid difficulty along with a description of what role you performed in the fight mechanically, or by simply attending our open raid events under the supervision of an officer.
        Loot distribution:
We operate on a loot council system which requires the ‘RCloot Council’ addon. Our loot council has a good knowledge of priority stats and trinkets for all classes as well as how large upgrades are to the overall raid performance, therefore loot will be distribute as best benefits the raid as a whole.
As a trial you won’t be prioritised for loot, however this doesn’t mean you’ll be completely disregarded.
        Application Process:
We are always open to applications from established raiders, people wanting to get into the raiding scene for the first time or people just sick of pugging and wanting a community of people to do content with.
In order to apply whisper one of our recruiting officers by one of the listed means. After a short exchange where they establish your aspirations within the guild, aspiring raiders will invited to a private discord room for a short interview with an officer and the raid leader Summer.
In this interview we will discuss:
      Any previous experience
      Logs (if provided)
Your knowledge of your class, role and raiding as a whole
How well you will fit into our guild community
Your favourite pizza topping (pineapple is an instant /gkick)
If you succeed in your interview we will gladly invite you to the guild as a raider trial. Our trial process approximately lasts 2 weeks or until we are confident you can reliably perform to an acceptable standard. Within this process you will have weekly contact with your recruiting officer and the raid leader to feedback on your performance and to ensure you are enjoying your experience within our guild.
        Recruitment Priority:
We are currently looking for dps as a priority for our mythic progression. Any Death Knights with a blood off spec would be very desirable  However this still means we are open to applications from all other specs and classes as well.
We are hoping to bolster our raid team in preparation for BFA where we will continue with the same aims and system.
If you are interested in applying please message one of our recruiting officers on either discord or
