As the rumors predicted, we are indeed getting a 1 year anniversary themed event, and there's a Game of the Year edition on top of that! This time it was the Xboxes fault that the news leaked, via site Trueachievements, who datamined info on the two components of the upcoming festivities. The GOTY edition is set to release on May 23rd, a day before the actual anniversary and seems to include the current Origins edition, as well as 10 anniversary loot boxes and possibly some more cosmetic items.

The event itself is a little more mysterious, as all we know is that there will be the usual 100-ish new skins, sprays, emotes etc, but no word on what the general theme will be. Here's hoping for everyone in birthday decorations, or baby versions of the heroes, but it seems likely we might be seeing some of the old versions of the heroes as skins, like the old red Reinhardt from the header image above from the BlizzCon announcement of the game. What we do know is also a little strange as the end date is supposedly set at June 5th, which would mean that the event could start as early as next week, if it follows the same structure as all other events to date. This info comes from the 50 anniversary loot box package on the Xbox store featuring this description:

Quote

Celebrate Overwatch's anniversary with a batch of commemorative treats for your heroes during a new event: Overwatch® Anniversary! Kick off the celebration with a bang by picking up Anniversary Loot Boxes*. Every Loot Box contains up to four cosmetic items, including at least one Anniversary Skin, Spray, Highlight Intro, Emote, Victory Pose, Player Icon, or Voice Line. More than 100 Anniversary goodies are waiting for you! If your Anniversary Loot Box contains an item that is already in your collection, you will instead receive in-game Credits that you can use to acquire many customization options. *Anniversary Loot Boxes are available to purchase or earn in-game until June 5, 2017.

There's also the rumor of a brand new game mode coming, featuring attacking and destroying an objective, based on datamined voice lines (check out the reddit thread for more info), but it's not necessarily connected to this event, and considering how close together these events will be it seems unlikely to show up now.

In any case, this is pretty exciting news, as these will be the closest two events in Overwatch to date, with Uprising having finished very recently, with some impressive stats as well.

Just in case there's confusion, the header image is from the old BlizzCon announcement of the game, not from any leak of the event.

No, I don't think that's what it meant. Every even has about 100 new items between skins, sprays, emote, and so on.

Correct, it's 100 total of skins, sprays, emotes etc. all together. Usually it's around 10 actual skins per event.
