As a new affliction warlock, I get told to turn off my pet occasionally. Is this because my pet aggros too much?

Infernal actually has two taunt like abilities so make sure both are off (look in your spellbook under the pet tab if they are not already on your pet bar)

If you're ever running your Doomguard try turning off it's Cripple spell (the one that makes it slow enemies) I was told this quite a while back and I believe it provides a small DPS increase to your pet.

Voidwalkers as far as I know should only be used for solo content, and just turn off your Infernal's taunts when you're using it during group content.

Felguards (for Demo), Voidwalkers and Infernals have abilities that draw aggro and make the mob focus on your pet. That can cause a lot of problems for tanks. Their job is controlling the enemies on the map and keeping them focused on them, and you cause them to lose control over them by using taunt abilities. You also risk having your pet die and losing a lot of DPS having to resummon it. They can't taunt raid bosses, but it's still a good rule of thumb to have the taunt abilities turned off by right-clicking them on the pet bar. They have keybinds so that they can still be used on an emergency basis.

Right-click off the abilities any time you are in group content that requires a tank, and don't use a Voidwalker at all because they will draw aggro regardless.
