Once the Aspect of Wisdom, Malthael abandoned heaven after the Worldstone’s destruction. In secret, he had resolved to end the Eternal Conflict by becoming a Reaper of Souls and eliminating everything affected by demonic corruption, including humanity. Now he’s made his way out of the high heavens, and into the Nexus. Death approaches!

Malthael is going live next week and Blizzard introduced the Hero with a spotlight today, giving us information on lore and abilities of the Aspect of Death. Malthael PTR Patch Notes can be found here.

Strengths

  • Sustained Damage
  • %-based Damage
  • Punish Melee
  • Self-sustain

Weaknesses

  • Crowd Control
  • Burst damage
  • Poke damage

Looks like he's going to have a high skill cap, but I might have to stop maining Arthas anyway (at least until the hype wave wears off) :(
Any strong poke heroes in current meta?

I was really hoping this would release today.

Come to the PTR and play him ;)

I've had the opportunity to check him out in the PTR. After 3.5k seconds wait time I got into a game. First off: every PTR game now features a Thrall and a Malthael on both sides. May the best duo win.

There were no tanks present, so the niche that Malthael fills was nowhere to be seen. Anyhow, his lvl 4 trait quest talent and Memento Mori combined make for a strong damage output. But I've seen streamers testing different builds (more poke), and he seems to be somewhat viable. Not OP by any means. But with Tormented Souls and your lvl 13 defensive you can easily hop right into your enemies team and stay there. Slow, steady dps is what Malthael represents. It's hard to escape (unless you're Genji or Tracer).

DPS-numbers have varied to extremes (both in streams and my own experience). Some games Malthael is the top dmgdealer with 80k dmg at lvl 20. Sometimes he only sits at 45k.

Did you see any particular consistencies with this? Was he top damage vs. tankier comps? Lower because of facing multiple squishy heroes?

Yes, mostly it was. I found that there's obviously a skill-gap between the new Malthael players. But the differences in terms of damage output were caused by these things (in a rough order of importance):

- size of the healthpools in the opposite team
- amount of melee in the opposite team
- number of enemies Malthael was able to hit (AA or E) during teamfights
- amount of hard cc/silences on the opposite team (Alarak is a nice counter) and amount of burst damage (coördinated or focussed damage)
- amount of time solo laning/roaming
- map (teamfight oriënted/PvE map)

But overall it all boiled down to this: On how many targets did Malthael apply his trait, did he pick the right talents to sustain in de middle of the enemy team, and did he take his trait-enhancing talents? Also a good use of Ultimate 1 caused more damage than an average use of Ultimate 2. (c.b.a. to look up names lol)

Malthael can heal for about 15% life every 2 seconds if he can Q 4 infected heroes (and some minions perhaps). Do more damage on him as a team if he overextends (many of them still do) and he dies. Let him live and he tickles down every single player.

I assume people will be jumping straight onto him and focusing him down then as soon as they figure out he's the threat. Although... people still don't seem to focus down the mages sitting there destroying your team, so maybe I'll be surprised!

True, that should actually be the case. But as you say, focus is often hard to find. Eventhough, focussing a malthael who is in the middle of the teamfight seems easier than focussing that Li Ming waaaaay on the other side (unless you're valeera, zeratul, nova, genji or tracer)

I'm waiting to pick Malth, get focused hard and feed all game - next game, face one and nobody touches him. It's the circle of HoTS life!

Blizzard has fixed the issue related to placement matchmaking ratings. All players have had their placement matches reset and Performance Based Matchmaking has been turned off until further notice.
      Blizzard (Source)
      Hey everyone,

As mentioned in earlier forum posts regarding Matchmaking Ratings here and the follow up here, we have been working hard on a fix to address the issue affecting placement matchmaking ratings. After further investigation, we identified the root cause and have deployed a fix. We apologize to everyone who has been impacted by the rough start to the new ranked season.

Once the hotfix is live in your region, we will re-enable matchmaking for Hero League and Team League. And although the issues we encountered were unrelated to the Performance Based Matchmaking improvements, we are reinstating Ranked mode with the Performance Based Matchmaking updates turned off. We want to make sure we’ve resolved all of the issues and that the ranked season placements are in a good place before we reinstate any new features. We understand many of you are very excited about the Performance Based Matchmaking changes and we’ll update everyone once we’re ready to turn them back on again.

Additionally, to ensure the accuracy and fairness of this ranked season, we have decided to completely restart this season. That means all accounts, regardless of whether they were affected by this issue, will be reset. We understand that this is very frustrating, particularly for those who have already redone their placement matches. Once again, we sincerely apologize to our passionate and dedicated players who have been impacted by this unfortunate issue. Thank you again for your patience as we work to make things right. Ranked queues were temporarily disabled yesterday.

      Hi everyone,

As many of you may be aware after reading a forum post we made earlier this week, we’ve been working to resolve an issue affecting placement Matchmaking Ratings (MMR) following the Ranked Season Roll on Tuesday. After investigating the issue, we rolled out a fix that we believed would resolve it, and also reset the affected players’ placement matches.

However, it’s evident that there is still unexpected behavior from placement MMR and we have been receiving reports that players are still being placed inaccurately. These placement issues are unrelated to the performance-based matchmaking update and we are working hard to determine the root cause and resolve this situation as soon as we possibly can. We sincerely apologize for the frustrations this has caused for those of you who’ve already embarked on your Hero and Team League journey this season.

While we are working toward that fix, we also want to prevent as many players as possible from being placed incorrectly. As a result, we have disabled ranked matchmaking queues in all regions until we are confident we can solve the issue.

We understand that disabling the ranked queues is less than ideal, and want more than anything to get you back in the action as soon as possible. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with the best matchmaking experience we can, so we thank you very much for your continued patience as we work to ensure ranked play provides a fun and fair experience for everyone.

Until that time, feel free to jump into one of our other game modes, including Quick Match and Unranked Draft. We will keep you updated as we make progress on a fix for ranked play. Game Director Alan Dabiri took full responsibility for the issue. The latest update was massive and this bug persisted even after all internal and extended PTR testing.

      Hi guys,

I just want to apologize to all of you regarding the Ranked mode issues we caused with this release. This was a massive update that included many changes across many areas of the game. We had a lot of internal testing and an extended PTR, but we still fell short here. There’s really no excuse. We need to do better, and I take full responsibility for this. The team is hard at work on fixing the issues, and once we have a fix deployed, we will re-enable the ranked game mode as soon as possible.

I just want to thank you all for your feedback, passion, and most of all, patience as we work to make things right.

      Blizzard (Source)
      Rules:
Shuffle pick - Choose from one of three Heroes before entering the battle. Standard play - no talent or level restrictions. Blackheart appears immediately after the gates open, and accepts Doubloon turn-ins as usual. Skeleton Doubloon camps have been removed from the map. Doubloon chests spawn more often, appear at new locations, and drop more Doubloons. Forts and keeps drop 10 Doubloons when they die. Mercenary camps drop an additional 3 Doubloons (for a total of 5). The Boss camp drops a total of 15 Doubloons. While chests are active, Blackheart fires one cannonball every 2 seconds in an area immediately around the chest. Blackheart does not bombard enemy structures as normal (at 10/12/14 Doubloons, etc.). Instead, he waits for a team to turn in 100 Doubloons, whereupon he bombards the enemy core until it's dead.
