Spec viablity for Tomb (new mage)

5 posts in this topic

Hey so as the title suggests I'm looking for a bit of information on the state of the specs for tomb as I have been asked to reroll to fill in some of the empty ranged spaces we have now found ourselves with in our mythic team and I'm curious as to which is going to be the overall "stronger" spec I know that is completely subjective
but a general guide line as I am presently working on my frost weapon but I feel as though I should be working mainly on my arcane one due to changes that are coming but both of the specs are being "buffed" and fire seems to be trailing behind still
I was just hoping someone with more experience as mage could run me through this so I can better decide for myself what I am going to do :)

I don't raid Mythic, but I main Frost Mage. My personal opinion is that if you're new to the class, Frost is generally more forgiving and gives you the shorter learning curve for getting up to the DPS levels your teammates will need. As you pointed out, the "stronger" spec is subjective and frankly, just depends on the player.

One thing that has helped my DPS immensely as Frost (haven't seen this in guides, but definitely noticed it occurring) is casting Ice Lance immediately after a Brain Freeze Flurry, even if you have no Fingers of Frost procs. For some reason, immediately after a Brain Freeze Flurry, Ice Lance will usually crit even without FoF procs.

Other thing to note that isn't on guides or tooltips: if an enemy (boss or add, any NPC) targets you and you need to get away or mage-tank for a bit, Mirror Image becomes situationally useful there. NPCs will always target the mirror images over you, regardless of threat. This, combined with Ice Barrier, Shimmer, and the Legendary Robe effect, often gives me a way to buy time and lite tank for a little bit if things go sideways.

One last thing that's not in the tooltips: Glacial Spike cleaves. :)

Hope this helps.

Actually this is in basically every guide throughout the internet, including in the guide here, as it says:

Quote

Cast Frostbolt Icon Frostbolt and immediately Flurry Icon Flurry if Brain Freeze Icon Brain Freeze is active.

But answering OP's question, it all depends on your playstyle... but speaking of numbers it will probably be between frost and arcane, just try to see what you feel more comfortable with.

The Brain freeze proc applies winters chill to the target when you cast flurry, that makes it so the target is "Frozen" for the 2 second window or whatever it is haha. I had to read the Brain Freeze and noticed that after playing frost for a little bit. I would suggest sticking to frost, seems to be pulling good numbers for each fight as far as I know. Fire has it's fights and arcane seems to be the spec for kj lol

Pro tip: don't look at top DPS parse lists because they don't tell you shit about individual quality AND how well a spec fits you. The better it fits, the more DPS you will push with it in the end.

Big data never applies to the individual - this is a big lesson people apparently need to learn.

Hello!! This is Starby from Velocity on Sargeras[A]. We're an established guild, that does mythic raiding in the morning/daytime. We're looking to enhance our roster with skilled and reliable players. If you're a mythic raider looking for a fresh start with BFA, and are interested in morning/daytime raiding -- check out Velocity!
The goal of Velocity is , of course, to take down mythic bosses and to also have fun in the process. We’re searching for like-minded players who are interested in playing at a high level in a laid-back environment. If you can joke around, then focus up when you need to; this is the guild for you.
Our main roster is composed of veteran players. Some of us have been playing together for a little over a year, while others are new friends. We have a solid core for our dream team – we’re simply looking for a few more to round us out!
        [A] <Velocity> 10/11M, 11/11H – (5/9M 7/10M 7/7M)

      Raid Times: 10am-1pm CST | Tues/Wed/Thurs
        Recruitment Needs
Melee – DH, Rogue,  Warrior, Enhance Sham
      Tank – Monk, Bear
Ranged  – Ele Shammy, Boomkin, Warlock, Hunter
Healers - Resto Sham, Mistweaver, Paladin -- flex preferred
**** Offspecs are a huge plus!!

      Requirements
Some Mythic raiding experienced is preferred. With BFA, we're seeing a lot of players returning after a long hiatus. Any experience raiding old content is a plus. Going forward were giving everyone a chance, old and current players alike, to start over and prove themselves.

      Attendance
We're dedicated and ambitious players, so commitment to our raid times is necessary. We’re interested in consistent players who are realistic and honest about their day-to-day schedule. Raiders have to communicate in the event of tardiness or absences. Schedules change, things come up and real life always comes first. All we ask for is a heads up!

      Trial Period
Three weeks. After an agreed upon start date, 9 consecutive days demonstrating attendance and play.

What you can Expect from us:
Dedicated leadership, communication, well defined goals, and a sense of community. Apart from raiding we also run M+ with each other every week.

      What we expect from you:
Players who can survive and react to mechanics. While also maintaining performance at their role of damage or healing. Many players struggle to do one, we are looking for both. Apart from this, just be a friendly. It might also be a good idea to bring a sense of humor.

If we sound like a good fit, let us know! Go ahead and apply online, leave a reply here or send us a tell on BNET/Discord. You could also go old school and send in-game mail to Starby-Sargeras or Foxshine-Sargeras!

      Hi all,
Im not sure where to post this but im hoping someone can help or at least point me in the right direction.
TL;DR - My DPS is awful and i want to increase it
I played fire & frost spec back in cata upto 85 and have recently got back into WoW again and finally realised what people talk about when they play "end game" i wish id known about raiding sooner!
However, My DPS isnt great at all im eq 959 ilvl but my DPS comes out as low as 8-900 sometimes or i can hold a steady 1.1-1.2M. Simc comes out around 1.7M (obviously in a perfect world) but i still feel im doing something wrong.
Ive watched videos, read forums and im sure my rotation is right. Im using Flask, Food and Runes and Pre-potting. I have some logs here of garothi.

      and this is my Raider.io - https://raider.io/characters/eu/twisting-nether/Buksh
Not sure if ive posted this in the right place OR if ive given enough info to help. but anything would be hugely appreciated.
