A new job posting by Blizzard hints at a remaster of old titles. While Starcraft remaster has been confirmed, will we see Diablo II & Warcraft III remastered as well?

Blizzard's looking for a Senior Software Designer for their office in Irvine, CA. According to the description, Blizzard plans to "restore them to glory".

Starcraft Remaster was already confirmed by Blizzard. (Thanks to @SMOrcMan for the link)

Job Description

Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation.

We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.

If you like wearing many hats, know small teams are the most effective, and look forward to challenges that will create millions of new adventures for our players, we would love to hear from you.

dunno if diablo 2 is the best place to start, that game was out soooooooooooooooooo long before 3. well yes they did support it sorta with ladder and basically seasons its still relatively fresh, i would think it would make more sense to start with D1 as a remake. then do d4 then do d2 remake once its older

Yeah, very cool. How about they remaster Vanilla WoW/BC like a huge community of people actually want? I don't understand this logic on Blizzard's part. You can still go back and play those games how they were. But with WoW, you can't play Vanilla without downloading an "illegal" client, no option of going back and playing that.

It's easier and cheaper to remake games like these, rather than to make a oldschool version of an MMORPG. And since WoW releases DLC that Blizzard wants players to buy, it might even prove very bad for Blizzard's wallet, and I'm pretty sure it's not what they want.

If they remastered D2 and bring in mod support, you could see Nezeramontias, snej and median on a whole other level. Without mod support, I'd think people rather stick to Median as it is right now.

There was already Starcraft: Mass Recall which lets you play original SC and BW with the SC II engine which is much better than what remastered SC looked like (ofc they could have some killer cinematics but that alone doesn't cut it) IMHO. There's also Armies of Azeroth regarding WC III tho haven't looked much into it.

Just hope they announced WC IV (and Fenix for HotS to celebrate SC Remastered) already :v

And to further on this could just re-open the same debates that were everywhere with the whole nostral situation that went down. Not wanting to open up a rotting diaper bag but we've seen remake of single player games do fine (pokemon, skyrim, etc) but would a remake of an old mmo really be that well received? I'm happy enough with the timewalking raids, tune old raids to current or slightly higher numbers, and i think that is enough (cept molten core anniversary pre nerf, never do that nightmare again, i can't even look at the mount, 6 hours on one trash pack, sniff, i....... i have to be alone for awhile)

WC4 would be a hard one with wow running at the same time as it. The only thing I could see really doing well with that is if they either do completely new characters like the other side of azeroths globe or something, or do a time skip like 1000 years into the future and do all new stuff there. The issue is simply with wow running however, with the end of legion basically being known, and the void lord stuff to follow, wow is getting a bit stretched. The next bad guy is basically coming for a lore retcon which is uninspiring. So, I'd like to see a WC4 maybe even 5-6, but have that be an engine to steer us into wow 2. don't get me wrong i love wow but the lore's getting a bit stretched. never thought i'd ever like anything other than guild wars and GW2 blew my socks off, im sure wow 2 could do the same.

I would have thought WC4 would be pretty straightforward if they just followed the plotlines from content expansions from Wrath of the Lich King onwards (where essentially WC3 finished at). It could be split into parts (much like Starcraft 2) with each part covering the main plotlines of each expansion (Cataclysm->Panderia->Warlords->Legion)

D3 graphics for D1 and D2 will ruin the nostalgia factor for those games. They were far grittier looking than the overly polished D3.

By all means make Diablo 1&2 backwards compatible with existing W10 systems, but why waste all that development time working on GFX reboots of past games rather than on brand new content? It's the same thing we see in Hollywood - lazy modern CGI remakes of old classics, rather than innovative new movie concepts.

Absolutely. Just emulate the old versions without any changes to them. There's a reason why they were so popular.

After 14 years of partnership, Blizzard and NetEase hit a rough patch in 2022, leading to failed negotiations. Consequently, when the licensing agreement concluded on January 23, 2023, Blizzard's game services were suspended across mainland China.
