TradeChat's BlizzCon Dev Interview with Alex Afrasiabi & Chris Robinson

Panser sat down with Alex Afrasiabi (Creative Director) and Chris Robinson (Senior Art Director) at BlizzCon to talk about Battle for Azeroth!

  • The chronological order for narrative in World of Warcraft is tied to level, so they decided to shard everything out. If you make a newbie Night Elf, you will still go through the same starting zone experience, but once you hit level 110 and have Battle for Azeroth, then you'll go through the entire storyline that culminates after that (The Burning of Teldrassil). Some of the world changes will be permanent through sharding.
  • Sharding creates the opportunity to go back and look at something that has a tangible meaning to players and update it in a way that is relevant to what's happening in the storyline.
  • A great example is Undercity; the upcoming conflict will update the visual and functional side of the city.
  • Flying in Battle for Azeroth is similar to what we have in Legion. You need to master and get familiar with the new continent, so it's coming later in the expansion.
  • There will be no Followers next expansion.
  • World Quests in Legion offer progression and the team is happy with how they worked out, so we're going to see them as well.
  • Both factions have their own continent for leveling and at max level, you can do World Quests on the opposite's faction continent.
  • PvP becomes a mode that you opt into. If you want to (world) PvP, you simply toggle the mode on and you will be sharded with all the players that want to PvP.
  • Now that you can go to the opposite faction's continent at max level the team wants to do something cool with the new PvP Mode.
    • (Tentative) A bounty goes on your head and people from all around Kul Tiras start knowing your exact location.
  • Zone scaling won't affect soloing old content, you can go to Ahn'Qiraj and kill C'thun.
  • Classic WoW is very early in development, both Alex & Chris have not answered any questions.
  • In Warfronts, players literally act as Warcraft 3 characters.

That's a shame. I was hoping they would maybe dive a bit deeper and do something meaningful with it, the follower quests are one thing I really enjoyed in SWTOR.

I assume that also means that mission tables are gone? Good. Such an unnecessary feature...

This is WoW not SWTOR. Besides the followers were only there to help in questing and world objectives in Broken Shore and Argus, they didn't really add any benefit in dungeons, raids, or pvp.

No, they are still looking for ways to implement this feature. There's nothing wrong with it, I found it to be quite unique in Legion in terms of having to send out your own people to accomplish tasks in order to progress through your class storyline. Plus they are great with getting some rewards for those who don't have time to do all the bounties or content.

      We have some interesting statistics to take a look at today, as redditor Quasiwave created an infographic looking at population data for both factions, the most popular races and classes, as well as a (somewhat less relevant/accurate) "most commonly paired race/class combos" diagonal. There's not that much shocking info in there, with Blood Elves being staggeringly popular for the Horde and Night Elves and Humans for the Alliance, but it's interesting to see all the stats anyway.

      Now, the numbers can never be exact (or even close to it), as Blizzard doesn't share that kind of data anymore, but Quasiwave took the next best thing, as the data was taken from Warcraft Realms and features 300,000 characters (not unique players).

      Here's some more info on the methods used by the author himself and you can check out the reddit thread for even more statistics debate on the methods used, whether it's a realistic representation, and just how accurate or not those diagonal boxes are.

      We're back to small hotifxes, as today's have only one actually, with the N'Zoth fight getting that multiple Spike Tentacle cast on the same player bug sorted out.

      Dungeons and Raids
      Ny’alotha, the Waking City N’Zoth the Corruptor Fixed a bug that could cause Spike Tentacles to repeatedly target a player with multiple casts of Pain Spike in succession rather than randomizing targets.

      Chromie is casually chilling on her hourglass near embassies in Stormwind and Orgrimmar, allowing players to pick an expansion/timeline they would like for leveling from 10 to 50 before heading to Shadowlands.
      New players that have not played through Battle for Azeroth and reached level 120 yet with at least one character won't be eligible for this option and must play Battle for Azeroth by default when Shadowlands goes live.
      Any subsequent characters you create will be able to pick from the following timelines for leveling:
      Kalimdor & Eastern Kingdoms
      Deathwing's emergence from Deepholm altered Azeroth's landscape forever and weakened the veil between this world and the elemental planes. Deathwing won't know what hit him!

      Outland
      The Dark Portal has once again opened, and the demons of the Burning Legion are advancing on Azeroth! Make sure their plans have a rather... Azerothian-sized setback!

      Northrend
      The tragic fall of Arthas Menethil and his ascension to the frozen throne as the Lich King is a moment in history that has permanently left a lingering scar across all Azeroth. Stopping the Lich King would really put the Scourge's plan on ice.

      Pandaria
      An ancient and mysterious land shrouded in fog for over ten thousand years appeared due to the events of the Cataclysm, and its people could really use the help of an adventurer like you. Going back to Pandaria is a great way to see that life is worth savoring!

      Draenor
      The orcish clans had a very unfortunate fate in our timeline, but the meddling of Garrosh Hellscream brought forth a force that threatened the very existence of all life on Azeroth--the Iron Horde. Travel back through time and meet the orcish clans and the draenei for the first time... again!

      Broken Isles
      The Burning Legion sought to conquer Azeroth and enslave its world soul and now that the Tomb of Sargeras has been reopened, they advance on our world. History will remember that you stood between the Legion and annihilation!

      You can return and talk to Chromie to select a different timeline whenever you feel like it.
      There is also a whirly screen visual and clock ticking sound when you select a timeline.


      Chromie also has some cool replies to go with your expansion choice:
      Vanilla/Cataclysm: "Who would have thought someone named Deathwing would bring about so much destruction?" Outland: "You look quite prepared!" Northrend: "Do not exercise restraint when showing your great power to the Scourge." Pandaria: "Whatever you do, do not get between a Pandaren and their brew. It'll be unbearably painful if you do!" Draenor: "If a scary orc offers you something to drink, you probably want to say no." Broken Isles: "If you find a powerful weapon, just make sure it isn't corrupted by the Burning Legion or Old Gods, okay?" Note that timeline icons are currently messed up on Alpha.
      Chromie Time allows you to select an expansion/timeline for leveling in Shadowlands.

      Blizzard just posted a preview of new Blood and Void Elf customization options that will soon become available on Shadowlands Alpha. These include new eye and skin color options. Both races will have the option to select blue eyes.

      In an upcoming Shadowlands Alpha build, Blood Elves and Void Elves will be receiving some new customization options that some of you may be interested in?. We wanted to give you an early look at a few of these new options available to the two races, with the first being several shades of blue eyes to choose from.
