Behind the Scenes of "Honor and Glory" Short

The latest animated short revealed at BlizzCon is one of the best ones, and in today's video, cinematics director Ben Dai takes us through the creation of Reinhardt's Overwatch origin story.

 

And here's the actual short, in case you missed it or, more likely, just want to see it one more time!

I really liked the short until the part where the director explained they can't show the wound or blood. It's just one of those realizations of "We made this so kids can also play it".

 

The smoke and blue goo just really doesn't do it justice. They're trying to depict the horrors of war (As he literally mentioned earlier) but it just does not deliver it entirely because of that.

 

Overwatch's lore is one of terrible war where humanity was on the brink of being exterminated. If you wanted to make this "E for Everyone" or "T for Teen", maybe you should have gone with a less grim setting.

 

 

It just totally ruins my SoD. Just don't show the event where a ~140 CM sword pierces his body and change the story so it still makes sense for him to stay behind and fight.

 

 

Just... Whatever.

I kinda get what you're saying there, but there's a lot to be said for the power of the imagination. I honestly never noticed the absence of blood or gore; I was caught up in the emotion of it. Balderich's wound, and its severity, was obvious through the acting. I actually assumed nothing showed because of the massive armor.

The only thing I stumbled on was how the loss of an eye seemed not to phase Reinhardt at all. That's a pretty major injury and a significant loss, and obviously a life-long one.

I'm really sorry if you can't get past that bit. This short hits me hard in the feels every time I dare to watch it. Blizzard as a whole has become entirely too good at doing that to me.

 

Edit: I like that his hair really IS amazing. :D

It's not something that ruins the scene, but it is indeed very stupid and grinds my gears. Reinhardt has a massive hole in his eye socket and a clear deep cut on his face, but they can't show blood? They show soldiers getting shot down and DYING, but a little of red liquid dripping from his armor would be too much and "gross"? C'mon!

      The events keep on rolling in, as we still have the Ana Bastet challenge going on until the 21st, and now Blizzard have already announced the next big one. The Lunar New Year is returning with the Year of the Pig and Solider:76 is pretty happy about it.
      So, new emotes, highlight intros for Solider at least, and a whole lot more cosmetics are coming next week, keeping things moving along and fresh.

      Here come the announced PTR notes, focusing mainly on some armor changes, going from 5 to 3 maximum damage blocked (remaining at a cap of half of the original damage). We also have another Brigitte nerf, capping the duration of Rally to 30 seconds, a nef to D.Va's Defensive Matrix and a big buff to Reaper's self-healing.

      HERO UPDATES
      General
      Damage reduction from armor reduced from -5 to -3 Developer Comments: Before this change armor reduced all incoming damage by up to 5, maxing at half of the normal amount. This change reduces the damage reduction to 3, while still capping at half. This change will be mostly noticeable on heroes that fire quickly or in a burst of shots (such as shotguns), and which do more than 6 damage per shot. For example, Soldier: 76’s Heavy Pulse Rifle will now do 16 damage per shot to armor, up from 14, an increase of 15%. Armor was a bit too strong overall, especially when being healed quickly and often. This change will help more heroes fight against higher armored enemies.
      Brigitte
      Rally Now has a maximum duration of 30 seconds Developer Comments: Sometimes Rally could cause a snowballing effect where it was too difficult to deal with the increased health of Brigitte’s allies before she built up another one. This change puts a cap on how long her Rally effect can last to make it a bit more manageable in those situations.
      D.Va
      Defense Matrix Cooldown increased from 1 second to 2 seconds Developer Comments: This change allows D.Va’s enemies to try to play around her Defense Matrix by increasing its downtime between uses.
      Reaper
      The Reaping Life steal increased from 30% to 50% of damage dealt Developer Comments: Reaper’s passive is one of the main tools he has which allow him to play aggressively when near his enemies. This change allows him to keep the pressure up as long as he can stay near his enemies enough to keep dealing damage. This change is particularly effective versus tanks, as they tend to do less damage than damage heroes, and also take more damage from his Hellfire Shotguns due to their larger hit volumes.
