2018 Ranked Play Season 1 Dates & Rewards

The first ranked season of 2018 starts during the week of December 12 and there's a new set of rewards that you can earn by playing ranked games in the coming months.

With that said, Hanzo should go live on December 12 as well.

Season Roll Dates

2018 Season 1 will begin as soon as our next patch is available for download in each region throughout next week. Check the start and end dates below and make sure you’re able to dive into the rankings as soon as the season rolls.

Ranked Play Updates

Along with the start of 2018 Ranked Season 1, we’re introducing performance-based matchmaking to all matchmaking modes in Heroes of the Storm.

Performance-based matchmaking will help our system better evaluate individual players' in-game performance during a match, and adjust how much their rank and matchmaking ratings (MMR) increase or decrease at the end of that game. If players perform beyond expectations for their current MMR, the system will award more when they win, and subtract less when they lose. As a result, players will reach ratings that accurately match their skill level more quickly than they did in our previous system.

There's more to the matchmaking improvements we're introducing, such as how the system differentiates highly-skilled play from one hero to the next. Be sure to read our in-depth blog on performance-based matchmaking to catch all the details before you jump into ranked play—or any matchmaking mode—next season.

Players who brawl their way through the leagues during the upcoming season can claim new portraits, mounts, and gold rewards for their achievements in Hero and Team League. Take a look at everything that’s up for grabs this season.

In addition to everything we’ve mentioned so far, there will be 10 placement matches waiting for you on the other side of the ranked season roll. Once you complete them in Hero or Team League, you’ll receive an initial ranking that is based on your performance during placements and your rank from the previous season.

My question about individual performance metrics is how solo play factors in.  Sometimes you want it, sometimes it is very bad for your team.  Say you have a troll pick Raynor and solo lane the entire game (despite pleas for help) so you lack any team fight damage and lose every objective.   The team can be throttled but that player has a boatload of seige damage.  I hope their system recognizes that they have no hero damage as an assasin, which should be their role.

In my mind, that doesn't matter. System teaches itself how much is each aspect important, be it exp, siege or hero damage, how many stuns that character pulled off and similar. Likely will have several versions of it, because it's not same to be playing with Archon Tassadar or Force Wall Tassadar.

The system takes their role into account, but the most important factor is still "Did you win or lose?". You still won't benefit from losing, you just get hurt less if you actually played well, and if you win, you get more of a bonus for performing your role well.

That's how I understand it as well.  Win/Loss determines direction of change, individual performance determines amount of change.

      The Climate Phenomena Nexus Anomaly has proven to be disruptive to the normal flow of the game and caused FPS drops, so Blizzard removed it from the game.
      The current plan is to have one more Nexus Anomaly in 2020 and going forward, anomalies won't be pursued at a set cadence.

      Hello fellow Heroes!
      After reading through your feedback and deliberating amongst ourselves, we have decided to remove the Climate Phenomena anomaly from the Nexus. While this was not an easy decision to make, we feel it is the right thing to do for the game. We also wanted to take this time to more clearly define the purpose of our Nexus Anomalies, and our plans for them going forward.
      Nexus Anomalies were intended to serve two functions:
      We wanted to distribute our annual gameplay updates throughout the year, giving us the freedom to try exploratory changes that we weren’t committed to if they ended up not working out. Previously, we introduced all our gameplay updates each year around BlizzCon. These updates were usually fairly impactful, and many players had trouble adjusting to the large amount of sudden change. We wanted Heroes to have an exciting, fun change for players to look forward to every season. As far as what exactly each Anomaly would entail, we did not have too many set rules, largely to ensure that we had the creative freedom to try bold ideas. So far, we believe our Anomalies have largely been successful, particularly after we had some time to iterate on them.
      With Climate Phenomena, we wanted to play with two ideas. The first was introducing a new Hero to the Nexus with an accompanying theme, and the second was the prospect of changing game states throughout a match, with a minor impact on gameplay. Unfortunately, we’ve found that these changes were too disruptive to the normal flow of the game, and they didn’t add enough fun factor to account for how much they impacted the player experience. Some players also reported frame-per-second (FPS) issues due to the Anomaly, which we found to be unacceptable.
      Moving forward, we intend to finish the year with one more Anomaly, released alongside the final season of 2020. After that, we have decided that we will not be pursuing Anomalies at a set cadence like we did this year. We still plan on regular gameplay updates, and will continue to experiment with ways to make Heroes a better game, so you can count on that still happening. In the future, we want to take a bit more time and release updates only when we feel they are in a more polished state, and we want to give the members of the Development Team the freedom to explore certain longstanding issues that we think are important to the community. For example, we’re considering large updates to maps that we feel could use some design improvements.
