Symmetra Rework Major Details

Recommended Posts

Geoff Goodman has been sharing a lot of info about the Symmetra rework since it was announced, including things that the team tried out and decided not to go with (making the turrets heal and making her a Support), as well as the changes they're currently using (you can shoot turrets that will attach to surfaces, they actually have health now, increased damage, big changes to her weapon, teleporter (which is no longer her ult) and you can place it up to 25 m away, photon barrier (which is now her ult) and more). Check out all his replies from this forum thread below:

We currently have moved her to Defense. We tried a healer version which had her turrets healing instead of dealing damage, but it felt super awkward, especially with how fast Overwatch moves.

That said, we are playing with a new way her turrets deploy. Instead of having to stick them directly onto a wall herself, she can now fire an un-deployed version like a projectile, which sticks to walls/ceilings/etc. Once it sticks, it will unfold like it does on the wall currently when she builds them.

This helps for a bunch of reasons but one of the big ones is that it makes it a lot easier to play her on offense or just be able to preposition her turrets much more easily/quickly.

Currently they will travel effectively infinitely in a straight line. (think of them like Pharah rockets). The projectile speed isn’t super fast though so enemy players can see them coming. They can’t currently shoot them out of the air though, but we’re still iterating and may allow this.

So far we’ve found the turrets to be much more powerful this way, not less. Keep in mind its almost like you’re deploying 2 turrets at a time now, since they are more powerful individually. You lose a little bit of map coverage, but overall the turrets are actually more impactful, not less.

Plus spending less time re-deploying turrets frees you up to do other things at the same time, rather than spending so much focus on moving around trying to keep your turret nest up somewhere useful.

Yes. We’re still trying some things but whats working pretty well right now is her primary fire changed to no longer lock on but works as a straight beam that is fairly thick and has increased range. It still has the potential to gain extra damage by dealing damage like it does now, but instead of going 30/60/120 dps it is currently 65/130/195 dps. However, it now takes a combined 2 seconds of damage to ‘level up’ to the next tier of damage instead of 1 second. This means the weapon has significantly more potential but it is more difficult to get it to max power. Also, when hitting a barrier it currently generates ammo instead of consuming it. This means not only is she good at taking down barriers themselves, but she is good at just generating charge off barriers and using that charge to take down enemies as well.

Her alternate fire is still a charge-up large projectile, but it has a bunch of important changes as well. First off, it charges to max charge in 1 second, down from 2 seconds. Next, the projectile speed has increased significantly, currently it has changed from 10 m/s to 30 m/s. Lastly, instead of piercing enemies, it now impacts enemies/environments and explodes, dealing area damage around it. We’ve been heavily iterating on how much damage this ball deals now, but a direct shot has been hovering in the area of 130ish, with a large % of the damage coming from a direct impact (rather then the explosion).

I’ll say it here again, we are still pretty heavily iterating on this stuff so this is all subject to change, but we like to try to give you guys some insight as to whats going on with her rework as it stands today.

I guess at this point I probably should have just posted everything at the same time since everything always makes more sense in context so ill just post whats remaining at this point.

Her teleporter is moving to her E ability and the Photon Barrier is moving to her ult, but these have massive changes as well.

The teleporter now works as follows: You place the exit like you normally do, except that you can place it up to 25 meters away, instead of only right in front of you. When you place the exit, the entrance automatically gets built right in front of you instead of at your spawn. It lasts only a short time but allies can use it freely as they normally do, but there are some new things that can teleport as well. We’re experimenting with what works and what doesn’t but currently you can teleport things such as Torbjorn turrets, D.Va’s exploding mech, Junkrat tire, etc. This has lead to some sneaky/fun plays that are really unique to her. It also allows you to get onto high ground on offense with a comp that might otherwise have trouble doing so. The health has been lowered to 300 and the entrance is now attackable as well. If either die, the other is destroyed as well.

Her Photon Barrier has moved to her ultimate and is now very different as well. Instead of placing a moving barrier, she places a static barrier wall that effectively is infinite in size and has 5000 health. She places this wall much like Mei places her Ice Wall, which means you can place it at some range and you can also change the orientation.

This is all fairly early still and we’ve only recently started working on the visuals/animations/sounds etc, so its still a little ways out. I don’t have an ETA on when you guys will get a chance to see and/or play with this but hopefully it wont take too long.

Its actually been super interesting in playtests (Photon Barrier). There are a lot of different ways to use it and exactly where you place it is super important. You can do stuff like throw it into a fight from spawn like a Hanzo ult, because it spans across entire maps.

Correct, the shield generator is gone at the moment.

The teleporter changes to make it work with certain objects AND allow the entrance to be placed in front of you (And the exit up to 25m away) seems a bit too good. That's my initial analysis at least. Imagine the mention of dva's mech going through it, or a junkrat ult or something like that ;)

This sounds really awfully. Enough sneaky the game for me when missing half of the ultimate sounds (especially if 3-4 ultimate happening in same time) and lot of times come Junkrat's tire without any effect or I can say D.Va as well.

The one I haven't seen mentioned yet that is quite worrying is how much better this makes Nanoblade. Genji no longer needs to use the dash to enter the fight, meaning he can enter, slash, dash, slash, with the timer being reset by the dash. It will absolutely delete backliners.

That's a good point but there were certain methods where he could do that already anyway. You could use a Mei LoS barrier so genji can get relatively close, Zarya's shield and Genji entering from a tricky location (Like just around corners), things like that were already enough to make genji's dash reach the backline.

This doesn't mean you're not right though. With good team coordination you could have both genji teleport into the backline and another big threat that makes it too much to deal with both at once. The teleport increases the options of doing so on top of the teleport being able to transfer more people/objects at once, meaning you could use methods I mentioned in my first paragraph for other things (or in addition to)

Having pharah teleport through and use her ult from their backline is also utterly terrifying.

Now to think of it, Symmetra with that mobile teleporter thing basically makes every hero in her team a flanker (With a few downsides). Heroes that weren't deemed viable because of low mobility might see a really big rise because she gives them exactly that. Seeing on how many different ways you can nerf the teleport if it is indeed too powerful however makes me not too worried (Cooldown increase, exit range decrease, limiting amount of people that can go through, deny objects to go through etc., plenty of ways to balance it)

I think denying use of certain abilities after the portal would be somewhat fair - it doesn't violate the ultimate completely, you can still use it very well to flank, but if you can ult immediately when going through it, it's just a bit silly. Zarya can pre-shield you and in the time it takes to disappear, you can have already killed multiple people (Reaper into portal, Zarya shield, he uses Death Blossom).

Previously you could always read the ultimate coming and try to counter it. Now everybody has the stealth aspect of Sombra.

Like many others: has she really been part of the support?

Nah, not really. She's more of a defense hero. In reality, there should be a "builder" tier where Torb and Symm both sit, but it'd kind of alienate them for newer players who have no idea where they then sit in the big 4 categories.

I'm sure it'll become quite evident to Blizzard on how well Symmetra (And her teleporter in specific) will perform and they'll nerf (I'd say nerf/buff but that seems a bit too ambitious :P ) her accordingly.

That said, it's Blizzard. It may take up to a year - or two, exhibit A: Mercy - before they do something about it.

Turrets will have a travel time, but infinite reach. Basically there's a way to see them go, so not necessarily be surprised if we see sym pull. For the moment we can not knock them out in the open, but they are seeing this point.

We have two back-to-back PTR patches today, the first one featuring Hero 31 arriving for testing, endorsements coming to many alternative modes, Role Queue improvements and some more Workshop additions. The second patch brought several Hero changes, from D.Va's pilot ult cost reduction, to Symmetra's Teleporter cooldown decrease and more!
      PTR July 23 (source)
      PATCH HIGHLIGHTS
      New Hero: Sigma
Sigma is an eccentric astrophysicist and volatile tank who gained the power to control gravity in an orbital experiment gone wrong. Manipulated by Talon and deployed as a living weapon, Sigma’s presence on the battlefield cannot be ignored. Sigma launches two Hyperspheres (gravitic charges), which bounce off walls and implode after a short duration, damaging enemies within a sizable radius. Using Experimental Barrier, he propels a floating barrier to a location of his choosing and he can dismiss the barrier at any time. With Kinetic Grasp Sigma freezes incoming projectiles in midair, converting them into shields. Accretion allows Sigma to gather a mass of debris and flings it at an enemy to knock them down. Unleashing his full powers with Gravitic Flux, Sigma takes flight, lifts enemies in a targeted area, and launches them into the sky before slamming them back down. Learn more about Sigma on his hero page 2.

In today's developer update, game director Jeff Kaplan goes into detail in Overwatch's 31st Hero, from his backstory that we've seen a glimpse of, where Talon "frees" him from a mental institution and then uses him for their own goals, to the fact that he's a barrier tank who can deploy his barrier in different locations and at different angles! Check out the full details in the update below or scroll on down for some gameplay action!
The easiest way to understand what the character is all about is to see it being played, which is exactly what the live event over on Seagull's stream right now is showcasing, with Jeff Kaplan along for the ride!

It's time for another Hero to join the roster! Sigma seems to have gone a little overboard with his experiments and ended up in a sticky situation, as we find out in his origin story. The video is pretty weird and a little creepy, but effective, and he's apparently also joined the Talon guys and gals. Also, apparently, he's harnessed the harness, so there's that.
Apparently, if you play the video backwards, he says some interesting stuff, with the highlight being "Release me" at the beginning:
Whether he's coming with the new Role Queue patch or if he's a longer way off remains to be seen, as he's not on the PTR quite yet, which would indicate a longer wait.
