WoW Midgame Moves: To Heal, or to Fight?

Recommended Posts

You may have heard about Opening Moves in Heroes of the Storm, where pros shared their knowledge about what to do at various stages of the game. In the first installment, Blizzard's Samantha Cruse talked to Andrew "Rubcub" Woods, who previously took 2nd place at the 2017 Arena World Championship at BlizzCon, about his aggressive Holy Paladin gameplay in the Arena.

World of Warcraft Midgame Moves is a continuation of the Opening Moves series. The second installment about how damage dealers stay alive without heavily taxing their healers will be up tomorrow.

  • The goal of both teams is to draw out enemy cooldowns while conserving their own.
  • Healers should always try to look aggressive. Sitting at max range won't do the trick.
  • An aggressive playstyle comes at a cost.
  • Always be aware of your mana state. If your current mana pool's low, look for opportunities to drop combat to replenish lost mana.

The gates have opened and the opening moves have been made. Now, it’s time to follow through on a successful opener—or recover, regroup, and work on the next setup. Welcome to the first installment of World of Warcraft Arena Midgame Moves, a continuation of the Opening Moves series which you can catch up on here.

THE BEST DEFENSE IS A GOOD OFFENSE

The initial clash can set the mood for a match, but may have little impact on how the rest of the encounter plays out. Here is where each team’s healer has a decision to make: fall back and help your teammates stay in the fight, or dive into the fray and help set up the conditions for victory.

Both teams’ goal is to keep their opponent on the back foot, draw out their cooldowns while conserving your own, and shut down mounting counterpressure. One way to turn the match in your team’s favor is the healer opting to go on the offense, rather than just sitting at max range, keeping everyone topped off. To learn how a healer can contribute to the combined offensive measure of their team, we spoke with Andrew “Rubcub” Woods, current member of Noble, who previously took second place at the 2017 Arena World Championship at BlizzCon under the Panda Global banner. Rubcub is best known for his aggressive play as a Holy Paladin.

“Always look to be aggressive,” said Rubcub. “[But] try not to overextend so far you’ll have to use a lot more cooldowns than you’re getting. As a Holy Paladin, you try to get close enough to cast Hammer of Justice. At the same time, you need to worry about what that’s going to do in terms of positioning, what you’re going to get out of it, and whether it’s worth it or not.”

WITH AGGRESSION COMES A PRICE

The choice to play aggressively is not without consequence. Typically, offensive abilities are incredibly mana-intensive: a Priest’s Mass DispelMass Dispel and a Shaman’s PurgePurge cost 8% and 20% base mana, respectively. Getting behind on mana can be an insurmountable disadvantage, especially if the match goes into deep DampeningDampening—a stacking debuff applied at the five-minute mark that reduces healing and absorption effects by 1% per stack every 10 seconds.

“Always be thinking about what your mana state is,” Rubcub said. To counter the threat of running out of mana, an aggressive healer will look for opportunities to drop combat, which takes six seconds, so they can drink to recover that lost mana. “You’ll want to try and get a drink in on the next aggressive push,” Rubcub added. “Try to top your teammates off and go get a tick or two off before the enemy notices.” Further into the match, that extra 5–10% mana might just mean the difference between victory and defeat.

While many factors go into a victory, a confident healer who stays several moves ahead of the competition can flip the midgame in their team’s favor with a well-timed application of crowd control, dispels, or clutch damage-dealing abilities.

Tune in tomorrow for the next installment of Midgame Moves, focusing on how damage-dealers stay alive while keeping up pressure and not taxing their healers too heavily.

This is pretty excellent.  Clearly, the goal for BfA is Alliance vs Horde.  They said it's not PvP, but that's just for story purposes, for sure it's supposed to be about PvP at it's core.  This is great that they make the attempt to explain to the average player how the phases of PvP are set up in arena and how you can approach it.  This also explains why they have slowed everything down with GCD's, so that they can orientate PvP to a wider, newer, audience.   Vet's are going to hate it, but I think it will make the game better in the long run.  GG

Blizzard will be retiring potions that increase your Experience gains in Shadowlands except for the BfA potion, so it's important to get rid of them or use them before the new expansion hits.
Elixir of Ancient Knowledge, Elixir of the Rapid Mind, and Excess Potion of Accelerated Learning will become gray items and unusable in Shadowlands, so it is best to use or sell them on the Auction House before Shadowlands.
The only exception to the rule is Draught of Ten Lands added in Battle for Azeroth that will retain its 10% increase in Experience gains up until level 50.

Following the tragic passing of Reckful, Blizzard added a Rogue Trainer named after him to the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind, where thousands of players paid tribute to the player.

Reddit user leothar noticed on the Beta that you transmogrify wands into other one-hand weapon types as of the latest Beta Build 35432.
In Shadowlands, players will be able to transmogrify each shoulder separately. Another exciting change discovered on the Beta is that you can transmogrify wands into other one-handed weapons,
So as a Mage, you will be able to transmog wands into one-handed swords and daggers.
As a Priest, you can transmog wants into one-handed maces, and daggers (as seen in the image below).

    • By Stan
Among other notable items added in Beta Build 35432, we found two that suggest Hunters will be able to tame Cloud Serpents and Undead Beasts in Shadowlands.
How to School Your Serpent requires Exalted with the Order of the Cloud Serpent, the Mists of Pandaria faction, which can be easily farmed during Mists Timewalking if you haven't reached the required reputation standing yet and the item teaches you how to tame Cloud Serpents.
"A lighthearted and picture-filled book on training cloud serpents as pets. A favorite bedtime book of Pandaren children." Simple Tome of Bone-Binding is also new, and we think it is tied to the Necrolord Covenant in Maldraxxus, since necromancy is their area of expertise. It teaches you how to tame Undead Beasts.
"A tome written by members of the House of Rituals, in large letters and using simple words, to teach the House of the Chosen members how to bind undead beasts to them. There are pictures." The Hunter stable size has been increased to 205 Slots in Shadowlands, so giving Hunters two new pet families to tame is a welcome addition.
