Reddit Reacts to Warbringers: Sylvanas

The latest animated short has been fairly polarising, with many interesting and in-depth discussions about it's content. However, there were also many, many more... creative expressions of people's opinions on the cinematic.

Let's get started with a good old conspiracy theory:

Next up it's a fairly standard meme format, with some commentary on Sylvanas' characterization:

And on to the dilemma this expansion may cause/is already causing:

Then it's mystery time as the gang tries to find out what's up with Sylvanas:

Then one simply called "Saltvanas":

The end of hope:

We then have a True Detective-like pondering of the cyclic nature of life and time:

Then a leaked screenshot of patch 8.4:

Also it seems like the Horde's last, best hope can't quite make it:

And finally, the only one who seems to have actually figured out the true plot and subtet of Battle for Azeroth:

There is a big difference between hating "because the cool kids are doing it" and seeing that this is lazy writing putting Sylvanas in a corner.

After clearly starting the war, burning a world tree, murdering her own people, making deals with Helya, and a few other items that have been spoiled about the story through testing, she is pretty much beyond redemption other than "because we say so".

I don't want to see her turned into Garrosh 2.0, or Arthas 2.0, or Illidan (BC version) 2.0... where she is clearly a villan because she believes she is doing what is right and just doing it in methods that are unforgivable. It's lazy writing. Pretty much the only "villain" that hasn't had this story path she's on now is Deathwing, and that's because he's pretty much always been evil.

I mean, they're not wrong. Anyone who thought that Blizz would give you a good, complex story is just deluding themselves. Ever since WotLK when Varian and Garrosh were at odds, WoW has been nothing but a high fantasy spinoff of the WWE with the Horde as the villains.

All the youtubers expecting that someone other than Sylvanas burned down the tree was expecting way too much from Blizz writers who only ever go for the 'movie preview' style of story telling where you can basically watch the movie just by watching its previews.

not really, it's derivative and stale writing but i think they plan to resurrect Sylvanas from the forsaken back to blood elf.

This doesn't conflict with anything anyone's saying, but not many people are talking about the confrontation between Sylvanas and Malfurion as a proxy for a confrontation between Sylvanas and life/nature magic itself - rather than an attack on the Alliance.

I think Blizzard's going to the core of their universe, which is iconified in the image of the schools of magic from the first page of the Chronicles book.  (Well, maybe not the exact first page, but close to it.)

  • Death is opposed to life (nature).
  • Fel is opposed to Arcane.
  • Void (shadow) is opposed to Light.

Sylvanas, as a representative of death, fights Malfurion, who's a representative of the Wild Gods and Nature.  Just like the world trees. Killing Malfurion was an attempt to act out the opposition between the two magics, but I think she realized it was a tiny gesture compared to what she could do - to destroy one of the trees.  Honestly, I'm wondering if the attack against life & nature magic was the goal, and the war was the pretext.

That doesn't give her an explanation for her actions that goes beyond what everyone's saying (corruption, ie Garrosh, is just another word for being influenced by a negative force, even if it's an attempt to rebalance something), but it does give the destruction of Teldrassil a larger meaning than just "I really want to hurt Delaryn's feelings so bad right now."

"The only one"? What? No way. I said they were going to bang by the end of the expansion in this other thread.

Bit of a spoiler here, but.... Considering the story of one of the Horde Zones in BfA, I'm hoping Sylvannas' story gets even darker than this. I hope she manages to kill one if her sisters, (Probably Vereesa as Alleria seems too powerful atm, both because of her void shenanagins and plot armor) and raises her as a Banshee. I mean, I don't know where everybody else has been for the last 14 years, but the Forsaken, for the most part, have ALWAYS been a sinister and dark people. It's about time they really start showing this.\

Besides, it's about time we Horde get recognition that we're the bad guys. We get great lines, the coolest uniforms, and the best Disney songs.

Hold it right there! We have just seen with Jaina's Warbringer that anyone can get a cool Dinsey song, a crazed look and a decent villain vibe. Sylvannas is a dark character, but it feels the writers are trying to drive Jaina up to her alley. Eventually.

I don't think Jaina will end up like that. She has the right to be acting all moody, given that a lot of bad things happened to her while she was trying to keep peace between the factions. She just wants revenge, and justice.

Now Sylvanas is manipulating those around her for those same reasons, but she also has her own personal agenda in order to gain more power. She almost killed her own sisters in the "Windrunner Sisters" online comic, for gods sake.

I was reading through a Reddit thread and I came to a realization that ultimately shamed me a little bit. I am not a huge role player, though I do like a quality immersive game experience, but some of the commentary on the Reddit thread I was perusing really made me pause.

My main is a Tauren Druid and no matter which way I look at it, there is just no way that my character could get behind burning Teldrassil, let alone killing Malfurion Stormrage. Unless I am simply not privy to information that would somehow make me ok with it (likely, I suppose), it is simply antithetical to all of my character's values.

Putting myself in my Tauren's shoes (err, hooves?) made me realize that these actions by Sylvanas really are going to create a bit of a fractious environment within the Horde.

Safe to say that I am thoroughly confused at Blizzard's current approach...

You mean Neltharion the Earth-Warder? ? (It's a good thing you said "pretty much", because he's only "always been evil" if you look at the timeline from, for example, a mortal's point of view.)

Maybe it is exactly what Blizzard wants. Conflict. Innocents WILL die in war. And sometimes you have to employ questionable actions to gain the upper hand. This game is called World of WARcraft after all.

I like how Blizzard is handling this, despite everyone's complaints. These tidy bits of tension that cause people to rage in the forums shows that it is effective. People care about these characters. The fact that you, as a Horde, sees that from the perspective of your Tauren character and genuinelly feels uneasy is the proof that their story telling is good.

I don't think it's lazy writing. Sylvanas is not even close to a Garrosh 2.0... To be fair I think she is becoming something much more dangerous.

Yeah. I've read your comment in that thread aswell. And all the images... this is stuff for some weird shit... I'm there are "pieces of art" covering that kind of matter alreay. No, I did no search and I won't. Finding something would be too disturbing... Well at least we'd have one really true "Child of Light and Shadow" then now wouldn't we... I mean, that position is still open since Illidan so graciously refused - well maybe is Arator, but who knows. Although the vid is damn well done.

The sadest yet problably true one is the one with the circle diagram... I fear for 8.3...

That last one is freaking hilarious! I said that in Towellie's channel right after it come out, with that ominous looks she gives him towards the end, and everyone freaked.

In a recent Reddit thread, players shared their regrettable experiences with the game's infamous Black Market Auction House (BMAH).
The highest bids often come with stories of disappointment and frustration, as highlighted by these popular comments:
Reddit user MadsenAn regretted spending a whopping 700,000 gold on a Tabard of Brilliance, only to receive it from a Twitch drop the same day, calling the coincidence "personal."
Redditor DM_ME_KUL_TIRAN_FEET shared a tale of woe about spending 180,000 gold on a BMAH mystery box, which contained a Goblin Weather Machine that they had already received from a Twitch drop just a day earlier.
Sammywitchdr recounted how they spent over 1 million gold on a Swift Zulian Panther thinking it was the rare ZG Tiger from vanilla WoW, only to realize they already owned the panther from a previous expansion.
Thoms689 was duped into bidding 1.2 million gold for a Tabard of Frost by a friend who was secretly outbidding him to inflate the price, a betrayal that cost him both gold and a friendship.
Vitchman shared a frustrating experience with a 600,000 gold bid for what turned out to be an Ordos drop that was unsuitable for his character class, illustrating the risks associated with the mysterious contents of BMAH boxes.
Caronry discussed a close call with bidding 5 million gold on an Arcanite Ripper, thankful to have been outbid, which potentially saved them from later regret.
Sigilweavers told a comedic yet painful tale of bidding 900,000 gold for a Firelands mount only to discover they already owned it after winning the auction. This story serves as a cautionary reminder to double-check what you already have before entering a bidding war.
MattyIce8998 recounted an almost regrettable bid of 800,000 gold on Frostfire shoulders, narrowly avoided by being outbid. They eventually acquired the item when it became craftable, much cheaper.
These stories encapsulate the high-risk, high-reward nature of the Black Market Auction House, where players' fortunes can swing dramatically with each bid and the lengths to which gamers will go for the rarities WoW has to offer.
Do you have any interesting BMAH story for us? Don't forget to share it in the comments!

Find out how to obtain the new Spark of Awakening in Season 4.
Spark of Awakening is used to set the item level of crafted gear to Item Level 502 in Season 4, but how can you obtain one on live servers?
Abandon the "Aiding the Accord" quest if it's in your Quest Log.
Pick up the weekly quest from Therazal in central Valdrakken. As you can see, there are now three possible quests for you to receive that will change every week.

The weekly quest options (and objectives) will always be the following:
      Dragon Isles Quest
Participate in a Community Feast Participate in a Hunt Lay siege to Dragonbane Keep Zaralek Cavern Quest
Protect the Researchers Under Fire Loot a Secured Shipment (Suffusion Camp) Complete a Time Rift Amirdrassil Quest
Earn 50 Bloom during the Superbloom Complete a Superbloom Plant 3 Dreamseeds Quest Rewards
After completing the weekly quest you will receive 1 Splintered Spark of Awakening) via Weekly Awakened Activity and a Cache of Awakened Storms (containing gold or gear).
You will need two Splintered Spark of Awakening and 250 Flightstones to create one Spark of Awakening.
      Awakened Raid Bosses
Apparently, Splintered Spark of Awakening have a chance to drop from Awakened Raid bosses, as spotted by @azatoth668!

We'd like to introduce you to a game-changing nameplate addon for Season 4 that's essential for excelling in Mythic+ dungeons.
Tracking every mob and their abilities in Mythic+ can be overwhelming, but this addon excels by replacing standard mob nameplates and cast bars to enhance your gameplay.
Once installed, mobs with critical interrupts will display a thick orange cast bar, while less crucial ones will show a thinner yellow bar.

Mobs with less crucial interrupts will have a thinner yellow cast bar.

Additionally, any mobs that inflict heavy frontal cone damage are marked with an arrow and feature orange cast bars. A voice alert will also prompt you to move by announcing "front."

The addon further assists by indicating non-interruptible spells that require crowd control with a purple cast bar and a vocal "cc" alert.

For tanks, if you're not holding aggro, the nameplates of the mobs will turn red, quickly showing you which ones to target.

There's also a handy visual cue on the cast bar, surrounded by a green border, signaling when you can interrupt an ability and your interrupt skill is off cooldown.

      Ready to try it out?
You can download Quazii Plater here.
For setup assistance, watch Quazii's comprehensive video guide.
Quazii has also created a Mythic+ cheatsheet that details all critical abilities for Season 4 dungeons, available in a text format.

Players are currently unable to catalyze gear from the Black Temple Timewalking cache into class set piece.
It's unclear whether this limitation is a bug or an intended feature, but the gear obtained from completing this week's Black Temple Timewalking quest cannot be converted into a set piece using the Revival Catalyst, as reported on Reddit.
I personally checked this at Antuka and can confirm that gear from the weekly quest cache cannot be catalyzed. I received the Grips of Damnation from the Essence boss yesterday, and found that the item was ineligible for conversion at the Catalyst.

Here's how you can upgrade your legendary weapons in Dragonflight Season 4 next week!
This one is for Fyr'alath and Nasz'uro owners. You must first farm 2 Antique Bronze Bullions. However, you can only acquire 1 Antique Bronze Bullion per week from Awakened Raid bosses. The bullion will drop in Raid Finder difficulty too.
Next week, the cap will be raised to 2 and a catch-up method will be implemented, so players who didn't have the chance to get their first bullion can get it from the weekly quest in Valdrakken.
Anyway, the soonest you can upgrade your legendary to the base item level of 502 is during the week of April 30th (so next week).
Once you have 2 Antique Bronze Bullions, head to the Parting Glass in Valdrakken.

Evokers need to buy Scale of Awakening from Iszinormi for 2 Antique Bronze Bullions. Death Knights, Paladins, and Warriors need to buy Scale of Awakening from Iszinormi for  2 Antique Bronze Bullions. Once purchased, use the consumable to upgrade your legendary to item level 502, the base item level for Season 4.
After that, you can further upgrade your legendary using Flightstones and crests. Check out our gear upgrading guide for more info!
