VG247 Interview with Terran Gregory & Gary Platner

Recommended Posts

We have another interesting interview with Principal Exterior Level Designer Gary Platner and In-game Cinematic Project Director Terran Gregory by VG247. Check out the highlights!

Check out the full interview over at VG247.

Interview Highlights

  • Alex Afrasiabi designed Battle for Azeroth like it would be the last expansion; they didn't hold back, went for the mega, and seized the day on design.
  • Terran is really sad that gnomes didn't make an appearance in the cinematics, but CGI has its limitations to how many characters can be created.
  • Siege of Lordaeron included more characters than any other Blizzard CGI film before.
  • It's Blizzard's mission to tell the most compelling and emotional story that they can.
  • Making everyone enjoy the story in the same way is an impossible goal.
  • With the release of Warbringers: Sylvanas, Horde players started to show their discontent. There's even been one extreme case of targeted harassment aimed at Christie Golden.
  • Creating a story that revolves around an all-out war required bold decisions.
  • They knew the reactions to the burning of Teldrassil would be passionate, but they did exceed their expectations.
  • Storytelling is about highs and lows. Old Soldier would not have resonated so well without Warbringers: Sylvanas.
  • WoW is a living, breathing game. The team's always looking for ways to improve it.
  • They'll support WoW for as long as the players continue to give them support.
  • From a story perspective, they wondered how great an end WoW would need to have. It's an evergreen franchise that they've maintained like a "carefully-tended bonsai tree."

Interesting. So we might get either a winner or mutually destruction of both factions by the end of it. Or maybe they will unite against some external force, maybe an alien army invasion of some sort...

@offtopic: dude's name really is Terran... He is working in the wrong game IMO.

I honestly believe that it will be mutual destruction to the point where N'zoth eventually shows up. Blizzard even stated that we will be fighting Queen Azshara, and she follows N'Zoth. Wouldn't be surprised if the expac ended on him honestly.

The article implying that the devs are discussing the need to end WoW.

Thanks! I've updated the line to make it clear what Alex meant.

I mean... I guess it seemed that way? But when I first read it I actually didn't get that first impression, I understood that Alex treated it as if it was the last expansion. But in all honesty the WoW team needs to make expansions as if it was the last expansion. Otherwise we end up in WoD again where there is major content drought despite how amazing the raids turned out to be.

The Vulpera Bag of Tricks racial works just like Mole Machine, allowing your character to discover new harmful and helpful tricks in the open world. In this week's 8.3 PTR build, 3 new tricks have been added.
When reaching into your Bag of Tricks, you can pick a helpful trick to heal your allies or a harmful one to deal damage to your enemies.

New characters start with Healing Vial and Corrosive Vial. This week, Blizzard added Holy Relic, Flames of Fury, and Sinister Shadows on 8.3 PTR. We will be able to discover up to 13 tricks in the future according to WoWDB.
      Helpful Tricks
Healing Vial - Heals a friend for [ Greater of {270% of Spell Power} or {270% of Attack Power * pctD * (1 + 0)} ] Nature. Share the wealth! Holy Relic (new)- Heals a friend for 28. Share the wealth! Harmful Tricks
Corrosive Vial - Splash your enemy with corrosive fluid, dealing [ Greater of {180% of Spell Power} or {180% of Attack Power * pctD * (1 + 0)} ] Nature damage. A good reason not to drop your bag! Flames of Fury (new) - Blast your enemy with the FLAMES, dealing [ Greater of {180% of Spell Power} or {180% of Attack Power * pctD * (1 + 0)} ] Fire damage. Sinister Shadows (new) - Torment the enemy with sinister power, dealing [ Greater of {180% of Spell Power} or {180% of Attack Power * pctD * (1 + 0)} ] Shadow damage. Check out our Visions of N'Zoth hub to learn more about Patch 8.3.

While Shadowlands is looking really good and most of the community seems really hyped for it, the intro cinematic was a bit more divisive. With Sylvanas trampling Bolvar with relative ease, a lot of players have been voicing their dissatisfaction over how the fight went, or at the very least at how it was presented, with the Banshee Queen seeming a tad overpowered. But in comes Kirill Stepanov with his re-imagining of how the fight went down, with Bolvar earning his title this time around:

Now sure, technically Sylvanas could still get out of that particular situation, but even if she did and won in the end, we really got no feel for Bolvar's power (not to mention the army at his command), so a bit of a bigger struggle would have been nice and this piece really showcases that. As you'd imagine the image is very popular on the WoW reddit and it would be nice if Blizzard took note of the, ahem, one-note direction some of the story elements are going. Sure, they have to set up the Shadowlands expansion somehow and cinematics can't last 10+ minutes, but just making things happen because they need to for the plot to progress is really bottom-of-the-barrel storytelling and hopefully the next expansion will be above that.
Here's the cinematic itself, to remind us of how it actually went:
Also, let's take a look at a few other impressive art pieces from Kirill Stepanov:

      "Survivors"

      "Start of Battle for Azeroth"

      "The Lord of the Infinite"

We have an upcoming fix for the new Spirit of Preservation essence on the 8.3 PTRand how it interacts with Mistweaver Monks' Vivify. Apparently the way it affects all healing from Vivify, both primary and other targets of the spell, has been changed to only affect the primary target, as was originally intended and as it works with other similar spells. The change will arrive in an upcoming PTR build.

Mistweavers are also receiving additional changes with 8,3 which you can find in our coverage of all the class changes for the patch.
      Mistweaver (source)
As a note for Mistweaver monks, a bug was recently fixed with regards to Spirit of Preservation ’s minor Essence effect and how it interacts with Vivify .
Prior to this bug fix, both the increased healing amount and critical strike chance from the minor Essence applied to all healing effects of Vivify, not just the primary target healing. This wasn’t intended. The essence should only be affecting the primary Vivify target’s healing value and crit chance, similar to how it works with something like Flash Heal or Healing Surge . A future PTR build should have this bug fix in it.

In this week's 8.3 Build 32805, Blizzard has updated Death Knight eyes with Lich King style smoke.
Blizzard has updated the Death Knight eye glow multiple times throughout 8.3 testing. Below is a comparison of the last two PTR versions and the one we currently have live on 8.2.5 retail.

Thanks to reddit user Malevolent_Vengeance for the screenshot.
In this week's 8.3 PTR patch, the latest version comes with smoke coming off of their eyes.

      Patch 8.3.0 Build 32805
All races can become Death Knights in Visions of N'Zoth and there will be a new starting experience for the class which involves Bolvar. If you want to create an Allied Race or Pandaren Death Knight in Visions of N'Zoth, you must pre-order WoW Shadowlands.

In Patch 8.3, any tanking specialization or a Druid of any spec with Bear Form active will have a flat +50% threat modifier applied to them when they unlock the Major Slot on their Heart of Azeroth. Changing specs to non-tank specs or leaving Bear Form will remove the threat modifier.
Up to now, tank specializations received bonus threat for each slot they had unlocked on their Heart of Azeroth. This is changing in Visions of N'Zoth and you'll receive +50% threat once you've unlocked the Major Slot.
A player with Heart of Azeroth level 70 should have roughly the same amount of total threat modifiers before and after Patch 8.3 goes live.
Let's hope the threat modifier will be baseline for all tank specs in WoW Shadowlands.
      Blizzard (Source)
We made a change via hotfix a few months ago to grant Tank specialization characters bonus threat for each slot they had unlocked on their Heart of Azeroth. In the Visions of N’Zoth update, we have changed this slightly.
In Visions of N’Zoth, once you have unlocked the Major Slot, if you are any tanking specialization or a druid of any specialization with Bear Form active, you will just have a +50% threat modifier applied to you. Changing specializations to a non-tank specialization or leaving Bear Form will remove this threat modifier.
There is no longer any bonus threat for each unlocked slot, you just get a sizable threat bump from the start. This should help reduce some issues where tanks with different Heart of Azeroth levels and slot unlocks were having difficulties with threat between each other.
edit: This threat modifier should be multiplicative, not additive. A player currently at Heart of Azeroth level 70 with all slots unlocked should have roughly the same amount of total threat modifiers before and after the Visions of N’Zoth update hits.
