M+ Chi Wave

Recommended Posts

M+ isn't out yet but I was reviewing the talents to get ready for it.  None of the tier1 talents look that strong if you're running with a strong DK tank.  I don't think they need the Mist Wraps slight boost to single target healing with EM bonus so it comes down to Chi Wave vs Chi Burst.  The numbers look pretty bad for Chi Wave at a glance but given it's a smart heal that prefers lower targets and on average you can count on Chi Burst healing 3 or so group members?

If Chi Wave gets 4 heal bounces that's 4X30% = 120% healing to the priority targets every 15 secs plus some free damage.

If Chi burst heals 3 targets that's about 200% every 30 secs and not necessarily the lowest 3 targest.  If your tank doesn't need a silghtly stronger EM, wouldn't the numbers favor Chi Wave over Chi Burst for dungeons?  Even if it did not prefer lower health targets, it still does more raw healing with 2 casts every 30 secs and needs no positioning.

To be fair, you can run no talents at all, and clear +10s just fine.  But if your aim is to push keys then you're going to reach a point where the tank isn't going to be invincible.  Whether its having the extra second on  the EvM hot allowing you to dps for longer, or the 10% extra healing bonus for when the tank is getting trucked, both situations are good for Mist Wrap.

As far as Chi Wave is concerned, its still a tremendously bad talent. For one, Chi Wave isn't smart, so its not bouncing to priority targets, it just bouncing to injured targets. But more importantly, its roughly half has much healing as a vivify.  In any moment when you're spending a GCD on Chi Wave, 1 of 2 things are true: damage isn't high enough to warrant a vivify, in which case, no healing is required at all, or damage is high enough enough to warrant a vivify, and casting Chi Wave has been a waste.  It's just a very under-tuned half measure of a spell.  In any situation where you'd want to use it for damage, a single tiger palm nets more damage.  In any situation where you'd want to use it for healing, a single vivify (not including mastery, mind you) will deal double the healing.

For Chi Burst, the reason you'd want to take this talent at all in dungeons is for DPS.  Unfortunately, the damage half of the spell isn't currently effected by the +40% aura buff we received, and its unclear if that's intentional or not.  Because of that it's only very slightly more damage than spinning crane kick. The difference is so small that its not worth giving up Mist Wrap.

TL;DR - Mist wrap is the only talent on that row that actually buffs your character in m+, the other two are outclassed by our basic toolkit
