Patch 8.1: Tides of Vengeance Overview

Recommended Posts

37143-battle-for-azeroth-live-developer-

Game Director Ion Hazzikostas talked about Patch 8.1 today and we've got the details!

  • Tides of Vengeance is the first content patch of BfA and it will be available for testing on PTR by the end of the week.
  • It's time for the Alliance to strike back.
  • Incursions are a new feature reminiscent of Legion assaults.
  • We're going to be looking at Saurfang, Tyrande (her feelings and the aftermath of seeing Teldrassil burn in front of her eyes), and what has become of Vol'jin.
  • Heritage Armor is coming to non-Allied Races. Dwarves and Blood Elves are first. No massive rep grind is behind this. If you're at max level and Exalted with Ironforge, you can start the quest for racial identity and get Heritage armor. On the Blood Elf side they will explore the Dead Scar (not many know that it was the aftermath of Lich King's incursion).
  • New Warfront is coming. Alliance is going to try and reclaim Darkshore. The Warfront is heavily themed after Undead vs. Night Elves.
  • The outdoor zone of Darkshore will be updated similar to Arathi Highlands for max level content.
  • We're going to have two new Islands. A vrykul-themed Island as well as a gloomy abandoned Gilnean city.
  • New Raid Zone "Siege of Zuldazar" is coming: It's quite different from any raid they've done before. The foe in this raid is the opposite faction. They have two complete separate experiences.
    • Slight spoilers ahead, one of the thing that the Alliance War Campaign is leading to is a direct strike at the Zandalari Fleet. You will join the Alliance forces including Jaina and fight your way up to the pyramid ascending to the top to confront Rastakhan.
    • Horde players will rush to its defense, beginning on the northern side of the pyramid ending with fighting Jaina in the High Seas.
    • The raid will house a total of 9 bosses.
    • Players will be able to recruit Kul Tirans and Zandalari Trolls after the raid. More details can be found here.
  • The Crucible of Storms (located under Shrine of the Storm) is a raid with 2 bosses that opens later after Zuldazar and hints at Azshara. It's the Trial of Valor of the expansion. It is going to give the Horde more Stormsong Valley lore, because they haven't had the chance to be properly introduced to the zone.
  • The patch is going to refine Azerite traits, the goal is to make them more complex, closer to set bonuses that have been removed.
  • The patch also focuses on system-wide improvements to the game and refinements of various features.
  • Champions of Azeroth reputation will be made account-wide.
  • Reputation achievements will be account-wide as well, but Alliance & Horde exclusive reps don't double count.
  • Race-specific transmog requirements are going to be lifted to faction transmogs. If you unlock it on one Horde race you can use it on other races without additional grinding.

Well...the "race" for this raid will be interesting to say the least.    Unless both sides have identical powers, just on different NPCs.

Probably each boss will have it's counterpart on the other faction, so different "skin" for same mechanics. Otherwise, it would have been a hell to balance and one faction might get easier/harder raid.

Looks promising. Personally I was hoping for a huge raid with Azshara at the end, but maybe they are saving her for later.

They said this is supposed to be BfA 's Trial of Valor, and Nighthold was Gul'Dan (which is here Azshara is supposed to be this tier.)

my guess would be this patch, then one more for Azshara.

I doubt they're going to kill off Jaina, at least this early in the expansion. Probably you'll defeat the forces get her on the ropes then she'll teleport out and you'll get a chest of loot.

Yeah, she's barely been in this expansion, and only at the end of all quests she was made Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras. She's going to end as leader for Kul Tiran human allied race.

Rastakhan might die though, but he had a deal with Bwonsamdi, so perhaps he will return as undead spirit? Also, his lifespan was artificially extended by Rezan, but with him being killed during fight with Zul, Rastakhan didn't have much time left anyway. They want to push Talanji as a leader of Zandalar (and she was presented in art as Jaina's counterpart for the Horde), so I guess that's where this is headed.

I just wanna go ahead and say that Ion never said this was patch 8.1. This content seems like something that could be spread across multiple patches. I remember reading something that they were trying to move away from the numerical patch numbers.

Also you forgot to mention that the raid will actually have 9 bosses, since the Alliance will be able to access the Horde bosses and vice versa.

Now you can look like a blend between Magni, Muradin and Varian. Fuckin' amazing.

HOT. DAMN. is that the actual dwarf heritage armor? if so...

Well, I leveled up a dwarf paladin so I could see how the alliance lives (Horde for life, here.) and I am now SO FREAKING GLAD I DID. That armor is BEAST.

It's true that he he didn't refer to it as 8.1. But he did say at multiple points that this was the next content patch (singular), though the third raid wouldn't be active right away.

It's too bad there wasn't an estimate of when 8.1 will be out. I've been wanting to make a Zandalari Warrior since they were first announced.

Also, how would the original races work? If you already have a 120 of that race then you get it's heritage armor? How would that work in regards to an example of having a 120 character and switching it to a different race?

Niiice. My old main from TBC/Wrath has pretty much every rep from that and classic era maxed out, while my current main only has Legion/BFA maxed, and another toon has Panda, another Warlords and Cata. So this really should help out with the meta achievements.

I wont say no, but personally I'd have rather they bring back the MoP system where your alts got double rep. It made grinding easier while at the same time making thematic sense, with your main 'vouching' for your alts.

Oh I like this. Those Heritages armours the new races got were pretty slick, mostly because they were designed to fit on those models rather than the standard human then stretch we get with everyone else. I'll be hitting up the Belf one ASAP. Are there any pictures of it, or just the dwarf one?

Meh. Another Horde city being attacked... can we please get a raid on an Alliance one instead?

Sure how about a raid on the Exodar where horde go and set up an azerite bomb and blow the whole thing up. Damned draenei, cause of all the problems in the universe...

Quantum items are a new type of cosmetics coming in Patch 10.1.5 that teach you appearances from the past, including weapons and armor.
The latest Patch 10.1.5 Build 49908 adds quantum items. While we don't know exactly how they will work, the tied spells indicate they will teach you item appearances from the past. Maybe this is Blizzard's new way of bringing back removed items like the ones from Zul'Gurub or Naxxramas in Patch 10.1.5 and instead of having X items you must collect, there will be just 1 sort of "token" with many appearances tied to it.
The following Quantum items have been added so far:
Quantum Wand Quantum Staff Quantum Warglaives Quantum Sword Quantum Polearm Quantum Shield Quantum Mace Quantum Shoulders Quantum Headpiece Quantum Knuckles Quantum Legs Quantum Knife Quantum Focus Quantum Greathammer Quantum Greatsword Quantum Gloves Quantum Bow Quantum Crossbow Quantum Firearm Quantum Chestpiece Quantum Axe

A large batch has arrived and features many Aberrus changes, from Sarkareth to Echo, and Zskarn as well. There's also an improvement for the Cobalt Shalewing drop rate, a fix for Rextroy's latest craziness and more.
      June 7 (Source)
      Classes
Paladin Retribution Fixed an issue causing the Indomitable Justice Azerite trait to sometimes provide an unintended speed bonus. Dungeons and Raids
Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible The Vigilant Steward, Zskarn Developers’ notes: These changes are directed at reducing the burden on tanks in smaller groups where Shrapnel Bomb was more difficult to handle with more limited amounts of utility from the group. [With June 6 resets] Zskarn health reduced by 10% for small group sizes on Normal and Heroic difficulties. [With June 6 resets] Shrapnel Bomb initial damage and DOT damage reduced by 50% on Normal and Heroic difficulties. [With June 6 resets] Searing Claws damage reduced by 25% on Normal and Heroic difficulties. [With June 6 resets] Unstable Embers damage reduced by 30% on Heroic difficulty. Echo of Neltharion Calamitous Strike’s debuff duration reduced from 40 seconds to 37 seconds on all difficulties. This is done to remove a problematic overlap in phase one of the encounter. Calamitous Strike’s debuff will now be removed when the encounter enters intermission on all difficulties. Fixed an issue where Neltharion immediately melee his target after casting Calamitous Strike on all difficulties. Added a slight delay before the same player can trigger an additional stack of Shatter after destroying Twisted Earth on all difficulties. Volcanic Heart’s radius reduced from 25 yards to 20 yards on Mythic difficulty. Scalecommander Sarkareth Developers’ note: A series of changes have been made to ease up a bit on the difficulty of this encounter on lower player size raids. Each of these changes are for non-Mythic difficulties only and scale back as raid size increases, evening out to about no changes for the 30 player raid. [With June 6 resets] Health of Sarkareth and Null Glimmers reduced by 6% in 10 player raids. [With June 6 resets] Duration of Astral Flare buff increased from 23 seconds to 30 seconds in 10 player raids. [With June 6 resets] Oblivion damage per tick reduced by 50% in 10 player raids. [With June 6 resets] Void Surge damage per tick reduced by 40% in 10 player raids. [With June 6 resets] Dread raid wide damage reduced by 25% in 10 player raids. Halls of Infusion Fixed an issue where Infuser Sariya’s Inundate spell could inflict inconsistent amounts of damage. Items and Rewards
Fixed an issue that prevented the Drakewatcher Manuscript for the Cliffside Wylderdrake: Black Hair customization option from dropping in some circumstances. Zaralek Cavern Fixed an issue where Cobalt Shalewing’s drop rate was lower than intended. Its drop rate is now in line with other similar drops. Quests
Fixed an issue where Sparks of Life were not dropping in Zaralek Caverns from various content.

Another week has gone by in Mythic+ and we have plenty of changes, as Shamans surge, Retribution does well and more. This week's tuning hasn0t affected the rankings yet, but we'll see what happens next week!
Note: The logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We're also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity, meaning the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.
      This past week was:
      Fortified, Afflicted, Raging
      All Keys
      95th percentile DPS
You just can't keep Fire down no matter what you do. While the top 2 remains the same, the Mage spec claws back up into 3rd after having gone down for a little while. The Shamans have united and are stronger together apparently, as they take over 5th and 6th, with Enhancement leading the way. The biggest mover this past week was definitely Retribution, as it gains 5 spots in 7th. Fury drops down 3 spots into 8th, just ahead of a very stable Havoc and a resurgent Survival, which leaps 5 up into 10th. Unholy joins Affliction and Assassination in the bottom 3.

Mythic+ All Keys 95th Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
The top 3 is more stable in the generalist bracket, but Fire also rises here, moving quite a bit more, 3 spots in fact. Enhancement is doing better here as well and Elemental is doing even more so, with the melee side of Shamans up 2 in 5th and the spellcaster up a giant 7 spots in 9th! Retribution is up here as well and Fury is down, Windwalker moves down as well and Havoc remains the rock of both rankings, anchoring it all in 10th here.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Tanks
There's been quite the re-shuffle with tanks as we see Paladins on top and Brewmasters way down in 4th after being in the lead at the start of the season. Vengeance has also moved quite a bit up into 2nd, while Blood remains stable in 3rd and Druids and Warriors remain at the bottom.

Tank All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.
      Healers
Shamans reign supreme still, while Discipline takes over 2nd and Holy also rises one into 3rd. Preservation is down two, while the bottom 3 remain the same as at the start of the season.
Healer All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.

For even more in-depth data for each individual key head on over to Warcraft Logs. And if you're interested in more info on the specs themselves you can always check out our class guides, as well as our Mythic+ guides and Mythic+ tier list.

Pattie's Cap is a new Alpaca mount coming in Patch 10.1.5.
The mount is rewarded upon earning the Whodunnit? achievement in Patch 10.1.5. The achievement references a new holiday called Secrets of Azeroth. We'll cover that in a separate post soon.
      Pattie
Provisionist Kathos encountered Pattie on her first assignment to Vol'dun. Pattie developed an affinity to Provisionist work but is eager to delve deeper, helping adventurers in their sleuthing.
