Noob's Guide to shifting from leveling BrM to raiding??

6 posts in this topic

So, I love my monk. Like many I crushed the levelling process as a Brew Master, and like many sucked at transitioning to real tanking on her. Not wanting to add to our reputation I began to heal, which incidentally I love (say it with me... Fistweaving rocks). But my first love will always be tanking.

Can anyone help out with a baby steps guide to making the transition? My gear is pretty good now though I feel quite squishy. Thanks in advance for anyone brave enough to help a noob represent his class better!

Hi Tankabelle,

I am more than happy to help with some guidance.

I can give you some initial pointers but an armory link and some logs will help me to help you(armory link is a good starting point)  :)

To start you want to head to Ask mr Robot to ensure you are hit and expertise capped. As monks our mitigation is mostly generated from the use of abilities and this requires chi. If your keg smashes are missing then no chi is generated and you cant then use it to keep shuffle active.

Here is the link to the current guide.

http://www.icy-veins.com/brewmaster-monk-wow-pve-tank-guide

Rather than reinvent the wheel i would suggest having a read of the guide paying particular attention to the rotations section.

Once you have read this then return and i can clarify or give examples of anything you may not understand, or help you to apply this knowledge with emphasis on the content that you will be running.

Brewmasters are very fun IMO however knowing the level of content and your current gear levels will change the way that you should approach gearing.

Monk tanking revolves around Shuffle uptime, elusive brew uptime, and using your damage reduction abilities at the right times.

Thank you for the offer here is my profile. http://us.battle.net/wow/en/character/garrosh/Tankabelle/simple. I hope that is what you need. As for the guide, while it is great, establishing priorities requires an understanding of the relationship between the spells but I would love some basic rotation help. More importantly I don't fully grasp the timing of the damage mitigation tools we have. Thanks a ton for offering to help

Btw, if you might go into bar setup it might be really useful to ensure proper rotations.

Thanks for the link Tankabelle.

For the Mr Robot weights i would aim for some thing like this:

http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/gear/11504312-eb00-4b54-b68b-60163c874f15

The dancing steels can be a bit pricey so the windsongs can be fine too. Windsong can be quite useful as BrM get alot of use from the secondary stats as opposed to the straight agi of the dancing steel.

To be a reasonable monk tank there is no real "basic" playstyle. It involves alot of micromanaging however for most people this is the main appeal.

I will go over a few things to help you get started but to be truly effective you need to have a good understanding of the whole toolkit as explained in the guide. This may not be the optimal playstyle but it is how i would approach it based off your comments.

Basic Rotation (assuming you keep rjw)

Pre pull: Expel harm then RJW(to generate chi and have extra damage to help with threat)

Roll to target, Keg smash, Blackout kick(to begin shuffle), tiger palm(to gain buff)

(This is where i like to throw in a taunt on the target for all the trigger happy dps but it isnt always required)

After this it is keeping Keg smash on cooldown, maintaining the tiger palm debuff on the boss and keeping your shuffle active through the use of Black out kick. Expel harm should be used to self heal and generate chi as much as your energy will allow.

This is the tricky part, you do not want to be using any of your energy using abilities that will cause you to not have enough energy for when Keg smash will come off cooldown.

You also dont want to let your shuffle buff drop off. The beauty of the shuffle is that the durations stack up. For example if you have 2 seconds of shuffle left and you use Blackout kick the 2 seconds will be added to the new shuffle applied. So if you are using BoK as often as your chi will allow you can over a long duration have enough shuffle that it wont drop off too fast and gives you a little breathing room.

I am sure there are many ways to track your shuffle and Tiger palm buffs. I use the addon "Need to Know" and have them front and center in bright colors as a reminder.

To be effective you will also need to manage your guard elusive brew and cooldowns depending on your talent choices.

Guard should not be used on cooldown however sometimes it may feel like it at times. Using Tiger palm as a filler spell when you have no energy or chi to spend will keep your "empowered guard" buff active and is shown on your bars when the guard icon is glowing. Your guards should always be empowered when they are used. Also note that if you are going to cast guard and expel harm in quick succession try to cast the guard first because of the self heal buff it provides when active(if your chi allows it, sometimes the EH may be required to generate the chi for the Guard).

When your melee swings crit they have a chance to grant you elusive brew stacks. As you are not 25man heroic raiding then the crit build will be more optimal for you.

With higher amounts of crit it is possible to have a very high uptime on elusive brew. The stack caps at 15 so if it hits 15 stacks be sure to use it or you will waste any future stacks because you are capped. Depending on the nature of the damage and the content you will be beginning on i would recommend using it every time it hits 15 stacks until you have had practice then you can look at mastering the timing.

The last thing i will mention so that you arent overwhelmed with a wall of text smile.png

Purify, this allows you to remove the stagger damage you are taking. A rookie mistake is using this too often. The chi you use to purify can often be better spent on maintaining shuffle, using guard or even expel harm especially at lower difficulty levels. Try to only use purify under heavy(red) stagger(this is when the purify ability will glow). Even in the instance of a heavy stagger it still might not be appropriate to purify. Knowing when and if to purify will come with practice and as you become more familiar with the encounters and damage that you will take to certain abilities.

Start with this and see how you go.

Hi Tanka Belle,

A good Add-On I use for pretty much everything is WeakAuras. When monk tanking is specially useful for tracking stagger, shuffle, CDs, Elusive Brew, almost everything. Here you can find a good guide to Weak Auras for monks http://sunniersartofwar.com/brewmaster-weak-auras/ ... I've read in some forums, I believe it was MMO-Champion, that there is a good brewmaster addon that does this too (but to be honest I find no need of switching Weak Auras for that with Sunnier's strings).

Another thing you could look into is Sunnier's (one of the best monk tanks out there) guides: http://sunniersartofwar.com/brewmaster-guide/   .... You'll find plenty information in her page. It's quite extensive but very recommendable. The "rotation" section needs special attention, she'll go from beginner to advance skills adding spells and CDs as difficulty increases.

Hope it helps!

Autumn Mist is a mythic raiding guild. Originating from a group of friends intent on pushing high end content. We are a young guild, started out in Feb 2017, driven to succeed.

      Raiding Schedule:
      Wed 20:00-22:00
      Thur 20:00-22:00
      Sun 20:00-22:00
      Mon 20:00-22:00 (optional Alt/Farm run)

What you can expect from us:
We aim to create a fair and motivating environment for progress. We won't scream at you for failing a mechanic but we will point it out and work with you to correct it so we can progress together. Loot will be distributed via RcLootcouncil as evenly as possible focusing on gearing the raid as a whole. We will respect you at all times. Progress is important to us but the atmosphere of the raids must be maintained a good personality and a sense of humor is a must.

      What we expect from you:
During your trial period we will be looking at your mastery over your class. Your attendance and attitude during raids. Your awareness of boss fights and mechanics, along with your ability to adapt and learn.

Our recruitment priority is listed above, but there is always opportunity for outstanding players.

Feel free to apply via the website, or add me on bnet if you want a chat, Nobbykinz#2994 all questions welcome.

Guild: Dawn of the Dead | http://www.dotd.org   Faction: Horde | Server: Zul'jin (PvE) | Timezone: EST   Current Progression: 7/9M Tomb of Sargeras | 10/10M Nighthold | 3/3M Trial of Valor | 7/7M Emerald Nightmare   We've been raiding max size raids continuously since WoW has been released and are the only guild to have done so here on Zul'jin. We have strong leadership, no drama, and plans to keep raiding for years to come. Unlike many guilds, we're not recruiting for the short term, and we don't over-recruit.   Website: www.dotd.org
Raid Times: Our schedule is 8-11 EST Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.   Needs: We are a small guild, and we expect high attendance. As such, we recruit people to raid, and desire people who can step in and contribute immediately. We don’t recruit people to sit around, so all spots are for raiders who can expect to be in most every raid.   We are currently looking to add skilled and reliable:   1 Healer
      High: Shadow Priest, Mage

*ALL exceptional applicants will be considered regardless of the class.   What we ask of you:   Effort: Not all applicants come from highly progressed guilds, and that’s okay, but it does mean that you need to be prepared. We recruit the player, not the gear, but we do ask that you have some current experience and be a minimum iLvl of 920. You need to have the best gear available to you, (BoE, Crafted) with gems and top end enchants. You also need to be able to display an understanding of your class mechanics, role in a raid, and ability to learn new fights.   Attitude: It’s a game. We play for fun. How you fit in with the guild is taken very seriously. We’re a bunch of mostly 18-30 guys and girls who have fun playing together. While we have a good time, we also know when it’s time to buckle down and work hard.   Skill: The best way to determine skill is to see you in a raid. Because we don’t wish to have anyone transfer that we’re not serious about, be able to express your knowledge of your class and why you’re an exceptional player who would be an asset and is worth a shot. Gear will come with time. Skill will not. Impress us with your knowledge of your class and gameplay mechanics. Feel free to share any logs, theorycrafting, or other work you've done.   Commitment: We make a commitment to you, and ask you to do the same to us. A raid takes a team of more than 20 individuals working together. We rely on you to show up to raids, research your class and new fights, respect your fellow players, and notify us when you are unavailable. You rely on us for gear, experience, and coordination. It's a large investment of our time to train and gear new players, and we ask the same investment on your part so that we can each benefit.   We have a variety of informational resources available to prospective applicants on our web site: http://www.dotd.org-- please refer to our "Applications" forum for detailed information. Also feel free to visit us on WoWProgresss for more information and kill videos! http://www.wowprogress.com/guild/us/...wn+of+the+Dead   Should you wish to speak to someone in-game, please don't hesitate to reach out to an officer directly, whisper Xanah (Xana#1662) or Jeare (Jeare#1759).   We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Two Strike Policy - US Sargeras - Alliance
      Why Two Strike Policy?
Two Strike Policy is a fairly new guild on US-Sargeras Alliance side, trying to make a name for itself in the wake of Antorus the Burning Throne. TSP has a friendly group of skilled, ambitious, like-minded raiders and humble players. We're easy going, we love to have fun, and we enjoy our raiding experience together while without the negative racist, sexist, homophobic behavior. We are non-biased and intolerant of drama in any form. When raiding with our guild, you will find that the atmosphere is very laid-back. However, when the time comes for progression, we know how to focus and get the job done. Absolutely no swap-blasting in MYTHIC raids.
Our number one priority in Two Strike Policy is maintaining our positive environment so that members are happy to log on and excited to raid and work together.
Loot: Two Strike Policy is Loot Council.
We divide loot by means of a loot council comprised of the guild officers and one rotating core raider weekly - so they know what happens behind the scenes. We take into consideration various factors such as:
      • Performance
      • Raid attendance
      • Previous Loot
      • Attitude and drive for progression
In need of these specific roles:
      High Priority Recruitment:
      Healer: Holy Paladin.
      Ranged DPS: Mage.
Melee DPS: Arms Warrior, Havoc DH, Rogue and Unholy DK (Classes that play multiple specializations preferred).
      Tank: Monk and Druid.
*Please note we are ALWAYS looking to upgrade our roster. If you do not see your class listed but are confident you can perform at our level, do not hesitate to contact us*
Our raid times are as follows:
      Tuesday - 7:30pm - 11:00pm EST (6pm-10pm CST)
      Wednesday - 7:30pm - 11:00pm EST (6pm-10pm CST)
      Optional Thursday for Alt Runs - 7:30pm - 11:00pm EST(6pm-10pm CST)
      Progression:
5/9 Mythic Tomb of Sargeras - (Moving on to Maiden after Mistress).
7/10 Mythic Nighthold Realm - (In 7.3 most are 9/10m or 10/10m – began late in tier as a guild). - Still run on weekend for Warforge/Titanforge Tier Pieces/Items.
      7/7 Mythic Emerald Nightmare  -
      Applicant Requirements: *
      Attendance:
We raid two nights a week during active progression, Tuesday-Wednesday. Raid invites go out at 7:30pm EST, begin raiding at 8:00pm and run until 11:00pm. There may be occasions when raids run slightly later than usual, this is typically 5-10 minutes over for progression/trash re-clear avoidance. If you cannot sustain a high rate of attendance (80% minimum), this is not the guild for you.
      Skill:
Can you do your job well while still being aware of environmental hazards? Bringing situational awareness is a must. Will you be able to adjust to an emergency change in the strategy without losing your main focus or panicking? Being able to adapt is crucial. If so, you're the kind of player we're looking for.
      Gear:
Your gear directly enhances your performance. Is it all properly gemmed, upgraded and enchanted? Is your artifact weapon at 60? The amount of effort you put into your gear correlates to the amount of effort you put into raiding. If your gear is not equivalent or close enough to the gear associated with the content we are clearing to allow you to carry your own weight, you must prove to us, without a doubt, you are the correct choice for your position through outstanding play, and motivation to improve not only gear but skill.
      Intelligence:
Are you smart? Do you make the same mistake twice? Can you learn from someone else’s mistake? Can you evaluate a given situation on the fly, and make the right decision in a split second?
      Experience:
You need to have experience close to that of the guilds current progression, past raiding experience is also a plus.
      Package Deals:
We will automatically decline applicants whose membership within Two Strike Policy is dependent on another person's membership. No exceptions.
      Public Communication:
Two Strike Policy cares about our public persona. It is for this reason we ask that unless you are buying/selling items offering or engaging services you are asked to not post in Trade/General/Instance chats. Trolling is not tolerated and can have you removed from the guild.
      General requirements include:
      * Preferably 18+, but just be mature.
      * Ability to use Discord and have working mic.
      * Ability to frequently check up on our forums for updates on raid strategies and other general guild information.
      * Income supply sufficient to support the repairs that a good progression week will result in. Consumables are also required for both progression and most farm raids. Once you pass trial, the guild supplies raiders with full repairs and flasks/pots for raid nights.
      * Stable Connection!! More or less NO disconnects during the fight. In order to play this game at the level we expect, you need a decent computer and a good internet connection.
Feel free to contact any officer ingame with any questions!

It could happen to us all sometimes our light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from others. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lit that flame within us.
At Project Nemesis we prefer to be stupid, be dumb, be funny, that's who we are and a beacon of crazyness that would make the Loony Toons proud, we don't try to be something that the WoW community may want us to be; that's stupid. Were just ourselves.
Will we go quietly into the night?
Will we be assimilated into the collective?
      NOT LIKELY!
Were working as intended version 1.0 baby! youll not re-boot us. The CIA,FBI, MI5 hasnt decrypted our Simcraft
What can I say about us that isn’t like the conventional norm? Myth + this HC that blah blah blah, our guild members all have attractive and funny friends and/or spouses possibly? That were rocket scientists, brain surgeons, army generals, or wealthy stock brokers?
Yes were slowing going through at our own Pace ToS 5/9 HC and looking for additional healers and some range DPS
Confidence is not simply, 'They will like us'. Confidence instead is, 'We'll be fine if they don't'....
Become the exception to the rule and youll become better for it, our thought processes arent just out of the box theyre out of this world

How about joining the guild with the fresh lemony scent of fun and person appreciation, we'll have you so immersed in green guild chat youll be jumping off cliffs and pulling 20000+ mobs in no time (seagulls excluded).
Whilst we are all here on Azeroth to help others; what on Azeroth the others are here for I don't know.
Many gamers lose their tempers merely from seeing us keep ours; honestly this is why our recipe is simple....
