The next Hero to join the Nexus is Mal'Ganis. The Warcraft Dreadlord is coming to Public Test Realms soon.

Mal'Ganis or Tichondrius?

We weren't quite sure if the dreadlord was Mal'Ganis or Tichondrius, but thanks to the folks over at /r/heroesofthestorm, it appears to be Mal'Ganis. Here are some clarifications:

We also looked at his model and different tints in World of Warcraft.

Mal'Ganis was mentioned in a 4chan leak with Belial back in December.

Mal'Ganis was one of the nathrezim sent by Archimonde as a jailor of the Lich King. He was chosen to head up the plot to turn Prince Arthas to darkness, and make him the Lich King's greatest champion. (Source)

Wow, this is just a really great addition.

Personally I would love to see a Pit Lord like Magtheridon in the vein of Diablo but this is a welcome hero.

Mannoroth is more iconic than a trapped Pit Lord.

Fuck yes, totally called it 🙂 Can not wait to see his kit! carrion swarm and vamp aura incoming!

But then in warcraft he had some other abilities but they're kinda already a part of other heroes kits (sleep: anna, summoning an infernal: Nazeebo.

Some heroes already have overlapping abilities.

They can always change functionality or add one on top of another. Good example is Maiev's blink added to another ability, as Zeratul already had similar kit.

I agree, Mannoroth is THE Pit Lord. All the others pale in comparison to him IMO. He corrupted the orcs, he helped Grom redeem the orcs, by - well - getting slain by him in the end of the Orc campaign in WC3. Then he reappears in WoD, again trying to corrupt the orcs once more, just to be killed yet again by Grom. This time though Garrosh saves Grom from the blast that kills him in the "original" timeline.  And then Gul'dan resurrects him in Hellfire Citadel so you get to see him once more - only to be killed a third time by the players.

BTW when you have time to kill watch the orc WC3 ending cinematic and then the WoD opening cinematic and compare the Mannoroth kills - basically just awesome, since the shot, where Grom stands in front of an exploding Mannoroth is the same.

On topic though I think Mal'Ganis is an excellent addition to the roster. After all the Nathrezim are iconic to WoW and the Burning Legion. I'm all for that. Looking forward to his kit.

Whoa, it's Mal'Ganis! That guy's awesome!

...who's mal'ganis

Mal'Ganis is one of the Nathrezim, a Dreadlord, and therefore affiliated with the Burning Legion. He was sent to Azeroth some time before the third war by Archimonde to ensure,  the latter could be summoned to Azeroth with the help of Arthas and Kel'Thuzad. He is the main antagonist in the first campaign, the human one, in WC3. He is the one that leads Prince Arthas to Northrend and thus to Frostmourne, making him a Death Knight and eventually the Lich King himself.

At that point he thought he served the Lich King as well and thought, when Arthas turned to darkness and picked up Frostmourne they'd be allies. The Lich King however had found his new champion in Arthas and let Arthas slay Mal'Ganis. Nathrezim don't die though, their souls return to the Twisting Nether. Mal'Ganis returns in WoW where he takes over the Scarlet Onslaught. Lorewise he should be alive at the moment, since Gul'Dan summons him to defend the Tomb in Legion and he doesn't get killed during the expansion - unlike Tichondrius or Varimathras.

As for the quote, it's the first thing he says to Arthas when they meet for the first time in Stratholme: I've been waiting for you, young prince. I am Mal'Ganis.

I have to save gold for this one for sure if he is a assassin :)

in wc3 dread lords had an aoe dmage ability (=good waveclear), lifesteal (good sustain) and sleep ( crowd control) and summon infernal for heroic ability.

this seems a good enough kit for a mele assassin to me :) fits well in current meta too !

They put Tichondrius' face on their teaser (no weird beard and the line pattern that crosses the eyes).

what class do you guys think he will be?

He has been leaked since september, he is an assasin with a bruiser playstyle ( heals through damage). And he will likely have wc3 iconic abilities so he will have a sleep cc as well. Instant buy coming right up.

I wonder if he'll hit the PTR tomorrow, because there is a maintenance scheduled for Monday.

Hopefully a solid solo lane. If so, I'm buying him right after the patch goes live!

Well damn dark conversion gonna be super strong when pulled off correctly, especially against the likes of diablo. Looks like another great warrior addition with nice abilities for most team comps.

Here's a message from Production Director Kaéo Milker about the future of Heroes.
Yesterday, Blizzard announced there would be no officially supported Heroes Esports events in 2019, because the game apparently doesn't bring in the desired revenue. As a result, Heroes will be set up for long-term sustainability, resulting in less content and a decreased cadence.
Kaéo Milker, the game's Production Director, told the community in his latest message that an all-star team of developers are still going to develop the game and support it in the future. The team has a unique opportunity to rething things and reprioritize. They're still committed to regular Hero reworks, themed events, and new Heroes, because they want to keep the game dynamic and fun.
      Blizzard (Source)
Yesterday, we announced a difficult decision—the HGC will not be returning in 2019 and we’ll be transitioning some Heroes of the Storm developers to our other game teams. While our extended Blizzard family working on World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch, and our unannounced projects will be getting an influx of much-needed, extremely talented Heroes devs to help them achieve their goals, it also means that we’ll need to change the cadence of support for Heroes going forward.
So, I’m sad. I’m sad because I love this team and this game that we’ve built together, with all of you, and this past year has been such a great one for Heroes of the Storm. The HGC had its best year yet and I was so looking forward to the 2019 season. On the game side, we’ve had a steady stream of some of the most sought-after heroes, amazing themed events, and impactful reworks. We also made meaningful progress on improving core systems and features across the game. We truly hit our stride in 2018, so I’m disappointed that some of the exciting plans we had for 2019 will have to change.
But all is not lost. The team that remains dedicated to Heroes of the Storm is a veritable Who’s Who of developers who have been driving every facet of the game from the very beginning—from people you know and have seen speak publicly about the game for years, to those who have poured their hearts into it from behind the scenes. In short, we’re continuing to develop the game with an incredible team that has the experience and passion required to support Heroes of the Storm well into the future.
The Heroes of the Storm team and I also have a unique opportunity to rethink things and reprioritize. Because now more than ever, our charge is to focus on taking care of you, our players, and to channel all our energy into keeping the game dynamic and fun. This means we’re still committed to regular hero reworks, themed events, and even new heroes. We’re setting our sights on the new goals and timelines for what we want to do with the game from here on out and we’re eager to share those plans as soon as they’re finalized.
So, I’m also excited. I’m excited for my teammates to bring their hard-won experience from making this game to the other teams at Blizzard to help their games be even better. And I’m especially excited for Heroes of the Storm to continue evolving with a renewed focus and purity of purpose.
Thank you for joining us on the journey so far, and please bear with us through these changes. Your feedback is as critical as ever, and continues to guide our priorities and decisions while helping us be better along the way.
      Thank you,
      Kaéo

Heroes Global Championship and Heroes of the Dorm will not return in 2019.
Update #1: Production Director Kaéo Milker today talked about the future of Heroes of the Storm.
Bad news for Heroes Esports. J. Allen Brack and Ray Gresko today announced that Blizzard's shifting developers from Heroes of the Storms to other projects. As a result, there will be no HGC or Heroes of the Dorm next year and we can expect less new content. They're setting up the game for long-term sustainability and they feel canceling the events is a "right decision versus moving forward in a way that would not meet the standards that players and fans have come to expect."
      Blizzard (Source)
We’re constantly changing and evolving not only our games, but how we support and grow them. This evolution is vital to our ability to continue doing what we love to do—making great games—and it’s what makes Blizzard, Blizzard.
Over the past several years, the work of evaluating our development processes and making hard decisions has led to new games and other products that we’re proud of. We now have more live games and unannounced projects than at any point in the company’s history. We’re also at a point where we need to take some of our talented developers and bring their skills to other projects. As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to shift some developers from Heroes of the Storm to other teams, and we’re excited to see the passion, knowledge, and experience that they’ll bring to those projects. This isn’t the first time we’ve had to make tough choices like this. Games like Diablo II, World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, Overwatch, and more would not exist had we not made similar decisions in the past.
Despite the change, Heroes of the Storm remains our love letter to Blizzard’s worlds and characters. We’ll continue actively supporting the game with new heroes, themed events, and other content that our community loves, though the cadence will change. Ultimately, we’re setting up the game for long-term sustainability. We’re so grateful for the support the community has shown from the beginning, and the development team will continue to support Heroes with the same passion, dedication, and creativity that has made the game such a unique experience.
We’ve also evaluated our plans around Heroes esports—after looking at all of our priorities and options in light of the change with the game, the Heroes Global Championship and Heroes of the Dorm will not return in 2019. This was another very difficult decision for us to make. The love that the community has for these programs is deeply felt by everyone who works on them, but we ultimately feel this is the right decision versus moving forward in a way that would not meet the standards that players and fans have come to expect.
While we don’t make these decisions lightly, we do look to the future excited about what the decisions will mean for our other live games and all the projects we have in the works. We appreciate all of our hard-working developers and everyone in the Blizzard community, and look forward to sharing many more epic gaming experiences with you in the future.
      J. Allen Brack and Ray Gresko
Here's also a post from the Heroes Esports team thanking the community for supporting HGC.
      Blizzard (Source)
As you might have seen by now, the Heroes Global Championship will not return in 2019.
It has been an incredible journey for the HGC, and we are eternally grateful to everyone who has touched the program. This was a tough decision for all of us, but one we agree is the right decision in light of the change with the game and our desire to only deliver the best competitive experiences with all of our esports programs.
The HGC has been proud to claim some of the most skilled players, entertaining casters, hard-working crew, professional teams, and dedicated staff in the business, and we can’t wait to see what this explosion of talent into the wider esports ecosystem will produce.
To the HGC supporters, thank you. Thank you for every piece of feedback you provided, HGC Cheer you cheered, and—most of all—every ounce of your passion. We felt it every day, back at the office and alongside you at each and every live event. The HGC could not have happened without all of your support.
      Sincerely,
      The Heroes Esports Team
      J. Allen Brack and Ray Gresko announced there will be no HGC or Heroes of the Dorm in 2019.
