Question about Serpent Sting

Recommended Posts

Closest thing I could find to answer your question is a comment on wow heads serpent sting page saying that the duration is refreshed by cobra shot, but the damage felt is only refreshed by recasting serpent sting. However, the post was from 4.3, so that may not be accurate anymore.

Serpent Sting works the same as other classes dots, other than haste affecting its tick speed. It does in fact have snapshots, however it gets updated on every cobra shot/buff refresh. Therefore, the only difference you can make is extremely minimal, and not worth the effort.

The wording on Cobra Shot's tooltip is the same as on Death Knights' Festering Strike, so with that logic it would indeed be beneficial to recast a strong sting and then extend it with CS. The fact that Festering Strike didn't refresh the diseases and only extended the already existing ones was what made the festerblight playstyle possible back in T15. Given the wording is the same, I would assume it works the same. The thing I'm left wondering is why this hasn't been more largely discussed if it indeed holds true.

Possible scenarios:

1. The increase isn't high enough to make for a noticeable difference.

2. SS is dynamic and/or CS really does actually refresh it instead of simply extending.

@Ceraius,

There are many posts saying CS does recalculate every time. When I get home I'll try to find some sources for you.

Once WoD is released... R.I.P. Snapshotting.

R.I.P. Aff locks lol.

On serpent sting, I haven't noticed if cobra refreshes or just extends ss, but then, the only time ss deals a large portion of my damage (as SV) is in heavy AoE situations that mostly occur in trash.

Eh, I won't give you a source, but I tested in on a dummy and yes it does recalc.

My serpent sting was ticking for 26k, after a proc I hit cobra and it started ticking for 35k. Definitely recalcs on serpent sting.
