Patch 8.1: Dungeon Difficulty & Rewards Increased

Recommended Posts

6fNpwiM.jpg

Blizzard's increasing overall dungeon difficulty and rewards by 30 item levels in Patch 8.1's Season 2.

We noticed that dungeons now provide better gear on 8.1 PTR:

  • Normal difficulty drops ilvl 340 gear (up from ilvl 310).
  • Heroic difficulty drops ilvl 355 gear (up from ilvl 325).
  • Mythic difficulty drops ilvl 370 gear (up from ilvl 340).

The change also affects Mythic+ dungeons with loot from the end-of-run chests starting at ilvl 375.

Description of the datamined SPLASH_BATTLEFORAZEROTH_8_1_0_2_FEATURE2_DESC string also indicates increased difficulty, so it's very similar to Legion.

  • Increased challenge, better loot, and a new seasonal Keystone affix: Reaping.

Mythic-quality Azerite gear from dungeons now has the fifth ring implemented, so it's safe to assume that changes listed above will not be implemented when Patch 8.1 goes live on December 11, but when Battle of Dazar'alor opens in early 2019.

Now at least this ilvl inflation will mean that even the normal dung drops being 340 (and therefore epic quality) will scrap in the new azerite currency

They're actually blue /rare/ on PTR right now.

30 ilevels is way too much of a jump, 10-15 would have been better. At the rate they are going we'll need another squish after the next expansion, whatever its called. You'd think they'd know better by now.

So this means it also increases M+ rewards. It's not a bad idea, as this means dungeons will stay relevant much longer throughout the expansion. Normally ilvl would gradually increase during expansion, even when doing only LFR for the newly added raid (that always ended as better than normal from last tier), this offers some alternative, which makes LFR even less important.

If you have read the post, you would have seen it says at the bottom:

I dont know why people are sore over this. This is a natural gear level increase for each new tier that has been happening for all of the game's history. M+ cache rewards will go up too, so it will likely be 410 for the weekly cache and 415 for mythic Daz. Lol this isn't anything new people.

I don't have a problem with them bumping it up, as you say it keeps content relevant, but honestly the jump is too high. Adding 15 item levels would have been fine, but 30? That's crazy.

Not the entire game, just the last two or so expansions, and it has pros and cons. I just think the jump is too big as it invalidates a lot of work people have done.

I agree the jump is a bit much, but at this point, wow is what wow is and I stopped worrying over it. But as far as gear level increases goes, it has been happening with every new tier of raids throughout wow; the m+ component is only from the past two expansions, but the tier increase is normal and regular.

If they only upped the ilvl by 15, mythic raiders would already be overgeared for heroic content. not that heroic content poses any problems whatsoever, but at least in the early content release you still have to play mechanics instead of just nuking the boss before his first mechanic has to be played.

What he is referring to, regarding last 2 expansions, is the increase to ilvl from the original expansion's dungeons. That was never done before legion, and it made the initial dungeons worthless. The only time you got ilvl increases in dungeons, before Legion, was if they added new dungeons. This makes the original dungeons relevant throughout the expansion, as they will increase ilvl every time a new raid comes out. So you are correct, in that ilvl was increased when new dungeons were released in patches, but he is correct in that they only started raising ilvl of existing dungeons with raid releases in Legion.

Tama's Dragonflight Helper is a Weakaura that displays a weekly to-do list in the game and it's been updated for Dragonflight Season 4!
The WeakAura is very useful for keeping track of everything in the game at max level. It shows you a to-do list with the weekly tasks, provides you with the locations of rares, super rares, information about your current Renown standing, and more.

You will find Tama's Dragonflight Helper at wago.io. Please note that you must first download and install WeakAuras 2 to import the string.

Cataclysm's Grim Batol has been added to the Mythic+ Dungeon rotation in The War Within Season 1, and one boss received a brand new model recently on the Alpha.
General Umbriss, the first boss of the dungeon, got a shiny new model, which is quite different from his previous one. Below is a screenshot of the old a new model.

Blizzard have clarified why players are able to get a full Spark of Awakening through the two available Splinters in the first week of Dragonflight Season 4, and it seems it's only for this week and only due to catch-up rules being enabled!
      Splintered Spark (Source)
Just want to confirm this with some details.
Everyone essentially started Season 4 in catch-up mode. Players were able to get 1 Splintered Spark of Awakening from the weekly quest, whether that’s the weekly “Last Hurrah” quest or the PvP weeklies offered by Malicia.
And then you’re able to get another splinter / half-spark from any valid catch-up sources, such as Mythic+, Awakened Raids, and PvP wins.
Next week and thereafter, only one Splintered Spark is obtainable every week. And like Seasons 2 and 3, with the increasing cap on Splintered Sparks per week, and if you ever fall behind you will be able to get Splintered Sparks from any catch-up source.

It seems there may be an easier way to obtain the Tusks of Mannoroth appearance during the Mists of Pandaria Remix event!
The tusks are one of the rarest transmogs in the game currently, even with the recently added Siege of Orgrimmar skip, as their drop rates are VERY low (0.1-0.3%, reportedly). As spotted by MrGM, the new Tusks of Mannoroth are a cosmetic appearance item added in the new limited time event. Now, some have suggested they may just be purchasable from the Bronze vendor (the currency that will drop off of pretty much anything in the event), making them pretty easy to get, but it seems there might be a different way to get them.
It's unclear whether the cosmetic will actually be purchasable or if it will drop somewhere else, but another interesting Mannoroth-related item was added as well, the Bones of Mannoroth, which may be related to the cosmetic.

As you can see the bones are a stackable resource you gain from killing Garrosh, and it's looking like they're a way to guarantee the Tusk appearance with enough kills! Just how many drop is unclear, but assuming you need all 20 for the appearance and that Normal drops 1, Heroic 2 and Mythic 3 bones, it may take at least 7 weeks to get them. Now the number required might be/is likely to be lower than the 20  stack maximum, and we may get more bones per kill.
But even at 7 weeks it's much, much easier to get than the current "hope for 0.3%" in retail, so it's still a pretty good deal! This may or may not upset players that farmed for the tusks for a long time the regular way, but there's a whole lot players that will be thrilled!
The Remix: Mists of Pandaria event starts on May 16th and should last until August 19th.
