Endgame Moves (M+): The Moonkin Tank (A Tale from Tol Dagor)

Recommended Posts

In this Mythic+-themed installment of Endgame Moves we hear from Healingstat and Nagura and their ill-fated trip to Tol Dragor, their improvised Moonkin tank and a whole lot of fears. We have the hilarious clips and full VoD, showcasing the dramatic ending to the run.

Early in 2018, we kicked off the year with our Opening Moves series, where we took a closer look at the early game of competitive World of Warcraft. We followed that up in July with Midgame Moves. This week, to celebrate the end of the year, we’re bringing you our Endgame Moves series: Lessons from Arena in 2018Going Fast in Mythic Plus Dungeons, Getting to "Go", and Comps and Combos in Arena. To close things out, Healingstat offers a personal story—with a very valuable endgame lesson.

Tol Dagor is a treacherous place to spend one's lunchtime and, for me and my friends, this would be a trip we would never forget. We entered the dungeon on Mythic 10 difficulty and decided to run a composition of three damage dealers and two healers centered around one particularly brave Moonkin tank—already a recipe for success.

The journey was going as expected, with only 15 deaths as we approached the second boss, Jes Howlis. We engaged the Salty Dog and the fight was going well, with our mages utilizing their Spellsteal to snatch the Motivating Cries to hopefully land us an easy kill. However, when we thought things couldn’t be going better, Jes’ brother Bobby showed up.

At the sight of Jes’ impending demise, Bobby howled, sending us all fleeing in terror. Noticing this opportunity, Jes unleashed a barrage of daggers which hit us all where it hurt.

"It's a shame Twitch doesn't support 4K streaming right now,” said Moonkin tank Caroline “Naguura” Forer. “Because if they did, I think you could see my soul leaving my body after that wipe." As you can plainly see from Caroline’s reaction, this wipe was both hilarious and upsetting—a mix of emotions that perfectly conveys, “Wow, I can’t believe that just happened.” Naguura—who has formerly competed in and also commentated the Mythic Dungeon Invitational (MDI), a display of the finest dungeon-runners worldwide—could only say, “I blame our healer. Both of them.”

In hindsight, a great many things went wrong that day. We decided to queue into Tol Dagor without a tank, we drafted a composition without any means of combat-resurrecting our improvised tank, and we didn’t use our Time Warp until the fight was almost over. Ultimately, though, it was our inability to interrupt or line-of-sight Bobby Howlis’ Howling Fear that led to our demise.

Lesson learned: if you encounter Jes Howlis, make sure to keep an eye out for Bobby’s fears. Tol Dagor can be an intimidating dungeon, but after the hour or more we spent wiping inside, at the end of the day, we will look back upon this memory and smile. We hope our defeat can lead you to victory.

“As you can see, you can play any composition in Mythic Plus and have fun,” said Naguura, before adding jokingly, “A Moonkin tank and two healers are probably the way to go next MDI!”

Just like you can find success in completing a Mythic Plus dungeon in good time, or getting those Arena wins, you can also find it in creating moments that make you and your friends laugh—moments that you can look back on that remind you why you love playing World of Warcraft in the first place.

Image: a copyright lawyer lying in wait.
It seems Blizzard do read reddit and take some cues from there, as an update to the PTR today came directly from an earlier post on r/wow!
A few days ago, redditor GrandmasterBow spotted that the copyright line at the bottom of the login screen hadn't been updated since the new year, and made a funny post/very serious copyright claim 3 days ago:
It seems Blizzard did not want to get into the global conversion rates for hugs, as Tyrsenus spotted a change on the PTR client today, with the copyright line being updated!

That's too bad for GrandmasterBow, as their plans to take over the game have been thwarted, but we can all be on the lookout next year, and already start thinking about all the things we'll change if we call dibs on the copyright in time!

The current patch 9.0.5 PTR build (37774) has been marked as a Release Candidate, meaning we're close to it going live. Blizzard have already stated that the patch is expected to arrive some time in March and this very much confirms that. The 23rd would be the best guess but we may see it as early as the 16th as well, so here's hoping!

While 9.0.5 isn't a major content patch it's still bringing plenty with it, from the new Mythic+ Valor System as well as improved M+ loot to many tuning passes for legendaries, Covenant abilities and classes, Epic Battleground, Maw and Torghast changes and more. You can read all the changes here.

Blizzard just announced an upcoming tuning pass for 3 bosses in Castle Nathria and several changes to Sanguine Depths!
      Raid and Dungeon (source)
We’re working on a slate of adjustments to several encounters that we intend to enact with scheduled weekly maintenance (early a.m. PST on March 2 in this region). Here are the planned changes:
      Dungeons and Raids
Castle Nathria Lady Inerva Darkvein Healers are now chosen as a last resort target of Shared Suffering and Concentrate Anima on Raid Finder, Normal, and Heroic difficulties. The ambient damage of Loose Anima for open containers has been reduced on Raid Finder, Normal, and Heroic difficulties. Targets of Shared Suffering no longer take damage from the beams they are wearing on Raid Finder, Normal, and Heroic difficulties. Passing through the opposite edge will continue to damage targeted players. Hungering Destroyer Health reduced by 5% on Mythic difficulty. Reduced the damage players wearing Gluttonous Miasma take by 10% on Mythic difficulty. The damage increase of Essence Sap has been reduced by 20% per stack. Expunge now shows up in the combat log when it is applied to players. Volatile Ejection now shows up as a debuff when a player is targeted with this spell. Sun King’s Salvation Increased the amount of healing Essence Overflow heals Kael’thas to 2.5% of his maximum health on all difficulties (was 2%). The tooltip will be updated to reflect the change in a future hotfix or patch. Increased the healing done bonus from Sinfall Boon to 100% per application on Mythic difficulty (was 50%). Reduced the strength of the Cloak of Flames damage shield on Shade of Kael’thas by 10% on Mythic difficulty. Sanguine Depths Wicked Oppressor’s Wrack Soul cast time increased to 2 seconds (was 1.5 seconds) and is cast less frequently. Regal Mistdancer’s Echoing Thrust damage reduced by 20% and is cast less frequently. General Kaal’s health reduced by 10% during the gauntlet event. Thank you very much for your feedback!

It seems it's the week of leveling tricks, as we now have a very fast method on our hands, after yesterday's very low-effort one. Unlike that one, however, this one is definitely leaning on the exploit side of things, so keep that in mind.
Leavaris came across a bit of an anomaly over in Silithus, as the Hive'Zora location is home to some weird scaling, XP-wise. The mobs seem to have their XP values in a twist, but you need employ a little trickery first via Chromie Time and Party Sync. The mobs will now grant crazy amount of experience and could get you from 50-60 in under 2 hours, as Leavaris claims! We haven't tested this one out, but it seems to be working quite well in the video. There's a solid possibility that this might be considered an exploit, so keep that in mind if you plan to try it.
Party Sync has been a little weird XP-whise in general, but this one will (and should) get fixed pretty soon.

Here come two more weeks of Mythic+ logs, with the class tuning changes having settled in. This week saw a +26 get taken down and not that many changes in the rankings since last time, as the meta seems to have very much settled in, so we'll be looking at the DPS, tanks and healers in all keys and some higher ones, as usual.
Note: The logs are based on POINTS (as noted in each image), and not actual damage or healing, meaning they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor, but a much, much smaller one, as it grants very few points if you do it significantly faster than just any in-time completion. We'll also be switching back to the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity.
In the 95th percentile we see some movement: unlike in raids, Mythic+ players haven't utilized the new Frost Mage buffs as much and even though the spec has jumped up a little, it's nowhere near the huge spike we've seen in Nathria. As for the all percentiles chart, we do have a new No.1, as Outlaw has taken Fire down a notch.

Mythic+ All Keys All Percentile Data by Warcraft Logs.

      Healer Specs
Not many changes to healers, as the rankings are pretty much the same as a couple weeks ago:

      Tank Specs
The tank meta seems very much set, as there haven't been any changes to the rankings for a long time now, as Vengeance dominates all:

      High Keys
And now it's on to the high-end, as we take a look at the +15 and +20 all percentile data for DPS roles, where things look a lot different week-to-week every time, as there's much less data to work with. Of note this time around is the disappearance of Assassination from +20ies, as they were on top for quite a while and are now at the very bottom. The +15s are much more stable due to many more runs, and the big change since a few weeks ago is that Fury dropped down a little, as the hype over the buffs seems to have died down a little and Fire/Windwalker returned to their 2nd and 3rd places.
