Heroes of the Storm Update: Revamped Hero Roles

Recommended Posts

Hero roles have finally been updated as part of the latest Heroes of the Storm patch. Specialists are gone for good and certain Heroes had to be reworked to better reflect their new roles.

New Hero Roles: Tank, Bruiser, Support, Healer, Melee Assassin, Ranged Assassin

Blizzard LogoBlizzard (Source)

As the roster and breadth of mechanics for Heroes of the Storm has continued to expand, the existing roles have grown limited in accurately describing each individual hero. To give both new and existing players a clearer idea of what kind of kit to expect during hero select, we are expanding Hero Roles to include new descriptions and replace those that were less clear in the past.

The New Roles

The new Hero Roles are Tank, Bruiser, Support, Healer, Melee Assassin, and Ranged Assassin.

Tank heroes are formidable juggernauts that protect their team by absorbing attacks from the enemy and blocking their retreat.

Support heroes provide boosts and other benefits to their teammates.

Healer heroes focus primarily on direct healing and damage mitigation.

Melee Assassin heroes are high-octane damage dealers that get up close and personal with their enemies.

Ranged Assassin heroes are fragile damage dealers that attack their enemies from a safe distance.

Who’s What Now?

Most roles didn’t have a quite a direct one-to-one transition, so below we’ve included a breakdown of each currently available hero and their new classification.

Finally. It's just like they showed at Blizzcon, no surprises here.

The cool stuff are the new skins and Lúcio and Chromie reworks.

tldr: Lúcio has the power of friendship as a new ultimate; the old Chromie is dead, all hail the new Chromie.

Wonder how long they've worked on this patch. Must have been months! Making new icons and titles for roles and their regular "reworks" only to change the meta a little bit and appear like they've put effort in it. /s

Hmm.... looks like there's a hell of a big party going on down there in the Ranged Assassins. 29 in RA compared to the average of about 12 in the other classes. So about 2.5x more. Now I don't play any other MOBAs, so you guys tell me, is that about the same ratio it is in all the other MOBAs too?

So it's like it was months ago, only 5 heroes in support category, thought "utility" would have been a more fitting name. Overall I like this idea, along with merging both ranked modes, since HL has been pretty dead in recent months.

So blaze is tank and not a bruiser but yrel and dehaka are not? And lost vikings are supports but probius is assassin? Such complex world we are in..

That Ranged Assassin category could have used with some splitting up. Otherwise, I'm very glad I got back into this game now of all times.

Tyrael a Tank, not a bruiser? W0t? Tanks supposedly have at least 1 form of hard cc base (he only has slows, Judgement feels never picked due to SanctificationSanctification), are particularly hard to kill (his stats are not on par with standard tanks, can't in any way solo tank, all he has is a measly shield that gets eaten rather easily and a +25 armor-lowest possible number). Only when and if you pick Defense of the AngelsDefense of the Angels at level 20 he feels like an actual tank(in the hard to kill sense) imho.

Blaze is played more as a tank, yes.  He doesn't do enough dmg to be a bruiser.  Bruisers need to be able to win solo lanes better.

Anub used to be considered a bruiser as well, but he is more of a main tank in the current meta.

There's currently no release date for the teased D.Va rework. It will come some time after Deathwing.
In July, Heroes developers teased a rework to D.Va with the following changes:
D.Va's Mech Mode will be changed to only suffer Movement Speed reduction while Basic Attacking or channeling an ability; Her Defense Matrix [W] will gain the ability to be retargeted for a short time while it's active; The Big Shot [R2] (Heroic Ability) will be baseline in Pilot Mode. D.Va will receive a new Heroic called Micro Missiles. Based on how her Ultimate work in Overwatch, we can assume that she will fire a barrage of small rockets that detonate on impact, dealing damage in a limited radius around each explosion.  Teased D.Va Rework
      Blizzard (Source)
Based on the Developer AMA from July 2019, she can opt into a solo-laner bruiser build, a team-support front-liner build and a pretty ridiculous self-destruct/pilot build, with lots of interactions between these options. The devs also briefly outlined some changes to her abilities and talents:
Her Mech Mode will only suffer a Movement Speed reduction while Basic Attacking or channeling an ability, not at all times. Defense Matrix can be retargeted with a short cooldown while it's active. Big Shot [R2] is now baseline in Pilot mode. D.Va has a new Heroic Ability called Micro Missiles. Her rework is coming at a later time after Deathwing and they don't have a release date set just yet.
      Blizzard (Source)
We currently do not have a release date set for D.Va's rework, but we will let the community know as soon as we are able. ?

Gareth from the Into the Nexus Podcast had a chance to talk to Kyle Dates and Brett "Daybringer" Crawford about Nexus Anomalies.
Check out our BlizzCon 2019 Content Hub for more interviews and news!
      Interview Highlights
They wanted to educate the player base at the same time Deathwing is hitting, that's why they invented Nexus Anomalies. The XP Globes improve solo laning, which has become stale over time. Nexus Anomalies, in general, is a new system that allows them to be more flexible with typical gameplay updates. The goal is to have Nexus Anomalies coming out with the Season rolls (once every three months). They want them to be focused and will listen to the community and collect feedback. They have a list of about 20 Nexus Anomalies that they want to bring to the game. One of the Anomalies they've tested internally revolves around bringing back Tower Ammo, but even after speeding things up, it took too much time for Towers to reload, which felt generally bad for the game, so they decided to scrap it. Another Anomaly thing they tried was turning wizards into sappers which is something the community's asked for a whole bunch, which delivered the globe to the enemy sometimes. They're overall happy with the cadence now that there's more breathing room in between updates. They're not developing any new Battlegrounds right now. Blackheart's Bay and Haunted Mines are still being internally tested and they still haven't figured out how to fix them. Interview VOD
