Leaver Penalty Change in Storm League Season 1

Recommended Posts

Leaver Penalty in Heroes of the Storm has been changed in Qhira's patch and you must now win 3 Quick Match or Brawl games without disconnecting to clear your leaver status.

Players should now think twice before disconnecting from the game because as of the latest Season, they will need to win 3 games to clear their leaver status (as opposed to playing a single match in the past). What do you think about the change?

So, it’s mentioned before but the number of required games for having leaver status doesn’t decrease after playing QM or brawl. I’ve played 5 or 6 games for 3 required QM and brawl and it still says I have a leaver status and I have to play 3 games. Can you guys please fix this issue?

Hey PilotJones!

This season, leaver games now require you to Win the game to clear it and not just play them. This can be confirmed by mousing over the leaver status icon under your profile portrait.

In the games that you have played, have you won enough games to clear your leaver status?

Good thing that will never affect me.
Still, I like it.

...yeah yeah "but what about those that just had a disconnect uwu" but honestly, if the game required normal games played leavers could afk macro through them. And you definately can make sure that the chance of you getting disconnects is slim. Also, if you get disconnects multiple times, maybe you should not stick to online multiplayer games since it gives a negative experience for nine other players.

Only thing that I could see as "harsh" is winning 3 games. Maybe a bit too much for a first leaver offence but aside from that I support it.

lol holy moly Best decision they've made in a long time. Then again QM has a bunch of trolls already but this is genius. Seriously though who likes having a bot in your ranked game? Non-justifiable.

I'd wish they implement something similar in their other games. Though that would be rather difficult in WoW for example. Can't imagine how one would do that. There is the deserter tho, but one can just que or do something else for 30min... so yeah dunno about that solution. NOT that it's a huge problem.

They can do it way better.
There must be an algorithm tracking your disconnects the same way the silence works. If you disconnect lets say once per week or per 5 days - no penalty. Everything happens - emergency, electricity, internet provider, windows updates 😄 . If it happens again - 3 wins. If its tendentiously it should stack 3-6-9. If you leave a QM/brawl game during your penalty it should reset the counter.

Implementing that in WoW is not hard either. If you leave a M+ before the timer ends or last boss killed you get a penalty and key can't be started with you in the party. If you like to leave keys it should stacks 1-2-3 hours. If you really love leaving locking not only 1 character but the whole account for a day or more so you can't participate in any M+. Ofcourse there should be some timer for leaving after the timer ends. Lets say you are stuck in a key for 40min or even more and at some point you can't go anymore so you want to leave - this should not be punished.

In Storm League, rank is always updated by taking the change in rating and determining the equivalent number of rank points to reward. While the Heroes team is quite happy with how it turned out, the system is causing problems in Bronze 5.
In Bronze 5, players gain/lose far fewer points per game than players in other leagues and divisions. The underlying problem makes it harder to climb out of Bronze 5 and causes frustration and bad gameplay experience. The team is working on ways to improve it and provided an explanation of why this is happening.
      Blizzard (Source)
With the launch of Storm League season 1 we have seen a dramatic improvement in rank distribution. One of the primary changes in this release was in how rank is determined. In the past, rank and rating were two entirely different concepts, both of which were updated differently after each game. It was very common for a player's rank and rating to diverge throughout each season which could cause the matchmaking system to struggle to find games.
With the changes introduced this season, rank is always updated by taking the change in rating and determining the equivalent number of rank points to reward. This leaves very few ways rating and rank can diverge and results in most players being shown a number equivalent to their rating.
Overall, we are very happy with how the changes are looking; however, we are aware of the inconsistencies players are currently experiencing in Bronze 5. With the new design, players in Bronze 5 will gain/lose far fewer points per game than players in all of the other leagues and divisions. The reason for this is a bit technical but we wanted to take the opportunity to elaborate on what's going on.
Under the hood, matchmaking rating is simply a number on a bell curve. Every league and division encompasses a range of values on the same curve. For example, if the overall bell curve ranges from -10.0 to 10.0 and the range 1.0 to 1.5 maps to Gold 1, then a player with a rating of 1.25 will have the equivalent rank of Gold 1 & 500/1000 points. These numbers are intentionally made up as the real ones are always subject to change but the idea is the same.
The reason for the decrease in points awarded in Bronze 5 is that the range of ratings that maps to Bronze 5 is much larger than other divisions. The difference is that this much larger range of ratings still maps to the same number of rank points. As a result, despite being rewarded the same change in matchmaking rating, the rank points awarded may be lower. This is visualized by the graph below:
We understand that this inconsistency is a negative experience for players so we will be exploring some ways to improve it.
Thanks for participating in Storm League and providing your feedback!
