Technically PvP recently interviewed Senior Game Designer Morgan Day on PvP in Battle for Azeroth.

Interview Highlights

  • Morgan Day has been on the team for 15 years now. He started in QA specializing in raids and dungeons; then he got a designer job at Blizzard.
  • Morgan talked about how buffs/nerfs come into existence. This is a process with multiple steps:
    • Step 1 is to identify if there's a problem.
    • Step 2 is to come up with a targeted solution for the issue.
  • With Essences, they wanted to have them up on PTR as soon as possible to give people time to provide feedback.
  • In Legion, there were Ensembles going up after every Season to help you get the last pieces for your missing set. In Battle for Azeroth, the deterministic Conquest schedule is designed so that you're not missing out on any gear pieces. Feedback is very valid for Aspirant's gear, and they are looking into viable solutions.
  • Against Overwhelming Odds does a very well job at keeping things balanced in War Mode.
  • Mechagon and Nazjatar are built differently, and the team had to come up with War Mode incentives for the new zones in Rise of Azshara.
  • Skill is the most important factor when determining the outcome of PvP. There are lots of things that play a role in that, including Essences, PvP Talents, regular talents.
  • Conflict and Strife caused a lot of people to do PvP.
  • The team's overall happy with how Essences in PvP worked out.
  • With the PvP Talent "bucket system," it's easier for the developers to balance things by introducing new talents without actually deleting old ones.

It's like this on RP shards too. Nothing like heading to Nazjatar and mechagon with WM on and coming up against 10 alliance per horde with 25% more stats...

Ya you don’t get 25% increased stats. You get 25% bonus on world quest rewards like resources and Azerite, 25% increase in rep and xp.

      Two top Arena World Championship players, including a BlizzCon champion and a 2nd place finisher, received suspensions yesterday, one permanent, as both were found to be using Real Money Trading.
      First off we have Emil "Zeepeye" Ek, who won last year's EU side of the AWC and had previously finished in 2nd place during the 2019 AWC BlizzCon finals, and is now suspended for 6 months. The RMT was related to "coaching", which could be interpreted as boosting by some, and Ek had a lengthy explanation of what happened and why:
      Secondly, a previous 1-year suspension was made permanent, as Martin "Loony" Moazzez (who shared the EU AWC 2020 win with Zeepeye and had previously won BlizzCon 2014) also participated in Real Money Trading and coaching. There's a lot more to his story, as the initial 1-year suspension actually wasn't for RMT but more complicated and, well, worse:
      The Arena World Championship continues in March.

      What would be the worst thing that could happen in the Shadowlands? The Jailer winning and remaking the way death works? Destroying the universe to build a new one? Sylvanas getting redeemed and us having to suffer through her being on our side again? Well, it turns out 9.1 might be bringing something MUCH darker on us than all of that combined.
      Sarazzan made this horrifying discovery when looking at the ending of the 9.1 cinematic, as a certain glowy light at the end of the chains over in Korthia is hinting at... terror:

      So get ready for a return to the CHAMPIONizing and WOONZing ways of BfA, as everyone's least favorite Christmas tree ornament might be coming back. When you think about it it makes sense too, as the instant he wasn't needed to save Azeroth anymore some very smart people decided to banish him into the deepest depths of the Shadowlands, but alas the Jailer just hates us SO much that he's bringing him back.

      We have two pretty great videos of Priests taking matters into their own hands, as Leap of Faith "helps" the DPS do the mechanics properly... and sometimes not so much.
      The first clip is a truly amazing example of "healers have to do everything"/babysitting the DPS, as this Priest took control and completed the Lady Inerva mechanic using a puppet:

      Interview Highlights
      There are some deliberate parallels between Arthas and Anduin in the new cinematic, but also differences. For a brief moment, Anduin was horrified about what he's done before the Jailer's power of Dominion took hold of him again. That didn't happen with Arthas. It appears we're going to learn more about Ner'zhul in Shadowlands. Garrosh Hellscream also has a small role to play in Patch 9.1. They don't want to reveal any spoilers, though. We will also hear more about Yrel, who wielded the light's power to destroy Mag'har Orcs in the Allied Race unlock scenario.

      DATA RELIABILITY: The data used in this article comes from benched.me. Reddit user OtherwiseUniversity7 plotted all keys available from the Blizzard API (excluding the CN region) on a single ridge plot to gather the data.

      Tyrannical Raging Quaking Prideful Total Runs Recorded
      We've looked at the total runs recorded for each DPS spec during the 10th week of Mythic Season 1. Based on the numbers, we filter out the most popular ranged and melee DPS specializations.

      Most Popular Melee DPS for Mythic+
      Unholy Death Knight remains the most popular melee specialization for Mythic+ with more than 2 million runs accumulated so far in Shadowlands Season 1. Havoc Demon Hunter is second, and in third place, we have Outlaw Rogue (up from 4th position).
      The least popular melee specialization is Survival Hunter. The spec swapped places with Assassination Rogue.

      The meta starts kicking in at around +16, where most specs start losing their share of representation to the metaclasses. Some non-meta specs stay stable in mid-range keys and only begin disappearing at higher levels.

      To see how the meta changes during the season, we sample the top 50 runs for each dungeon (a total of 6,000 keys) for each week. Next, we count the number of times each spec appears in the weekly top 500 sample.
      The data has a zig-zag quality to it. Spec numbers go up and down each week, which is the Tyrannical/Fortified split effect. On Tyrannical weeks, pushers are likely to bench their meta-class mains and play non-meta alts.

      Most Popular Ranged DPS for Mythic+
      Nobody is going to beat Marksmanship Hunter. The spec has accrued almost 5 million runs in Season 1 so far. Balance Druid is second with over 3.2 million runs. Fire Mage occupies 3rd position.
      The least popular spec is Demonology Warlock, with just +30k runs in 2 weeks.
