Classic World First Level 60 Coming Today

Recommended Posts

Today's the day we get a level 60 in Classic! Or well, at least in the West, as it's entirely possible there already is one on Asia servers, as they were in the lead earlier in the race. 4 days is what it's going to take to get to the level cap in Classic it seems, with the speedrunners about to end their race. We heard a lot about Method's race and event, but it's JokerD that's currently just shy of one level away from claiming that title.

There were several approaches to speed leveling for Classic, with no one being quite sure what would be the best due to the beta only going up to level 45. And so we saw 3 separate types of leveling going on - your regular questing, dungeon farm, and AoE mob clears. It's the latter that turned out to be the way to go, at least for JokerD, with some help from the layering tech for faster mob respawns. As you'd expect, there's a whole lot of rivalry going on between him and Method, with even some allegations of account sharing from one of Method's casters which turned out to be untrue, and sparked a whole lot of drama. On the Method side KennyMarsh is at the top, having gone to sleep today at level 55, with 5 players ahead of him and behind Joker, as Rikh, Uhdx, Tribe, Tatter and Nych are all at level 56 (source + individual streams).

He'll almost certainly dinging 60 today, probably in about 2-4 hours, so if you're interested check him out here:

We'll also check back when he does indeed ding, for that all important final burst of light and sound. And while the race to 60 will be concluded in the West soon, the one for Ragnaros and Onyxia will continue, as getting 40(ish) players to 60 will be the next goal.

So proud of my old Group Therapy guildie! He has been training non-stop for ages now, having gotten better and better at AoE leveling on private servers before WoW Classic launched (including an incredible 2 days 17 hours 1-60 run recently).

Will be there alongside the other 400 of us, present and past guildies cheering him on when he hits the big 60, and who knows 100k simultaneous viewers?! 🙂

Putting the finishing touches on a full Jokerd inspired AoE Grinding guide on our Mage Leveling guide as we speak!

Oh, so he abuses the layering system for respawns? Witty.

How is it abuse if people are doing the same thing to farm Mechagon Rares with the sharding system on live servers?  It's not like the xp potion fiasco we had earlier this year of exploiting xp gain.  This is just a clever way on gaining xp instead of waiting on 'x' amount of minutes for the area to repopulate with mob spawns.

You said it, clever it is.
I guess they days the leveling was about leveling and not calculating and alting around for proper layering utilization are gone.
But then classic nowadays would be unplayable without it, no argument there.

Also, for the raid race itself, my money is on Progress / Firemaw EU or APES / Gehennas EU. They seem to be much better prepared than Method right now! And there could be any number of surprise winners too, of course 🙂

It's actually quite similar to some of the older MMO's that I've played in the past.  Aion had a channel system in early leveling areas where players can switch to different unpopulated instances to farm nodes, rares, or just mob grinding.  SWOTR had a similar system in a lot of their older map sectors on select planets if population on those instances were almost to max.  Tera in certain zones would allow players to pick certain instances while they were in a nearby town.  GW2 Raid/Alliance invite allow server instance hopping to complete meta events on given endgame maps. 🙂

I'm still waiting for the announcement of someone doing the the Southpark Boar killing Challenge to reach max level.

Blizzard has applied a hotfix for Vicidus that prevented Frost Wands from weakening the boss in Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.

The EU gates opened around 8 PM CEST today and the guilds rushed in to clear AQ40. It took most of them around 50 minutes to get to and kill C'Thun, and then they continued to clear the rest. Progress took home the EU 1st crown for Classic (and also took an hour and 27 minutes total for the full clear), followed by gusy and Calamity, with 8 other guilds having downed C'Thun as well so far.
Progress: approximately 49 minutes to C'Thun and 1 hour 27 minutes for the full clear:

      Gusy: approx 48 minutes:

      Calamity: approx 46 minutes:

After the C'Thun eye beam issues that were hotfixed quickly, we now have another #nochanges problem in Ahn'Qiraj. Frost Wands were one of the main ways raids used to freeze Viscidus in Vanilla, which is necessary to move him into his next phase and progress the encounter, as other than mages, ranged classes didn't have any sources of frost damage to offer the fight. Now it's looking like these wands (primarily Wand of Biting Cold) aren't working in Classic, making the fight harder (or making you stack melee/mages, since melee cold weapons seem to be working fine, as the usually used Coldrage Dagger is working normally.).
Now this isn't a 100% fact, as there's some weird data happening, but the consensus seems to be there's some issue here, as covered in the reddit thread with many details like this:
      Viscidus (source)
"The numbers from early logs strongly suggest that wanding does not aid in freezing Viscidus.
The "known" number of freezing effects that must be applied to freeze Viscidus is 200. Next I link two logs where Viscidus is frozen 3 times using ~600 frostbolts* (600/3 = 200), but a substantially different number of wand hits (266 vs 503).
(*The exact numbers, as below, are actually 639 and 641. This is due to some weapon procs occuring between the freeze/shatter phase.)
Below is a log where Viscidus is frozen 3 times total. To do this required 639 frostbolts, and 266 wand hits. https://classic.warcraftlogs.com/reports/BmXrVk42w7JLxftN#fight=49&type=damage-taken&hostility=1&source=131 Below is a log where Viscidus is frozen 3 times total. To do this required 641 frostbolts, and 503 wand hits. https://classic.warcraftlogs.com/reports/FPQzgGnMkXHChjt4#fight=62&type=damage-taken&hostility=1&by=ability&source=167 "
Top guilds have managed to down the boss anyway, with 8 guilds in the top 23 (US and EU), and many more in China managing the freezes despite the wand issues. Here's an actual kill video from Norrath Classic, the 4th guild to have downed the boss:

Hopefully Blizzard are as swift at fixing this (possible) issue as they were with the C'Thun eye beam.

Blizzard has congratulated the first few gong ringers in the EU region, in a similar vein with what they did yesterday in the US region.
      (Source)
Earlier today, we watched as players on four realms in this region completed the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline, went to Silithus along with hundreds of others, and rang the gong, starting the 10 Hour War.
Congratulations to the first three gong ringers on each realm:

There was a bug that caused the war to last longer 13 hours instead of 10 on Pagle. Blizzard reported they had fixed the issue, and the war is finally over, but players on the official forums report they are still unable to zone into the new raid.
      (Source)
Gong rang at 8:48PM EST (ST) last night, war still goin’ strong, can’t get into the raid instances. Has this happened to any of the other servers?
      Good morning!
There are competing theories about what happened. One is that Saurfang overslept. Another has to do with the gates on Pagle having particularly stuck hinges.
Nonetheless, we think it’s now fixed and the 13 Hour War is over on Pagle.
      Never forget.
