What's Next in Heroes of the Storm?

Recommended Posts

A recap of what's coming to Heroes of the Storm in the near future.

Deathwing is available for play on the show floor, the Hero will hit PTR in the near future and all Virtual Ticket holders will receive him for free. In addition to that, Blizzard unlocked all Heroes until November 11.

Check out our BlizzCon 2019 Content Hub for all the latest details!

What's Coming to Heroes of the Storm?

  • A Toy 2.0 event is planned shortly after Deathwing with the return of a familiar game board and quests. It comes with new skins.

  • Here's a new Mephisto skin to go with the event.

The team has been hard at work to also bring you Cosmonaut Qhira.

...and the very first interactive mount!

People that will own the toy train mount can share it with their allies.

Any Hero that doesn't own it can channel for a couple of seconds before jumping into their own cart mount. You can all move on the train as a team straight to the enemy Core.

Gameplay Updates

Nexus Anomalies

  • These are targeted changes coming in the Deathwing patch that change the course of games.
  • The team will be able to change them based on feedback or remove them from the game completely.
  • All slain Minions, for instance, will drop small Experience Orbs that will magnetize towards you when you move close to them. This brings back meaningful solo lane.
    • Abathur will receive XP from his hat.

Master-level players and higher will only be able to queue with one other player in Storm League, and those players must also be Master players or higher.

The team has listened to community feedback and designed new Hero Mastery Rings available at levels 50 and 100+. The final ring will show your current Hero level.

The team is hard at work creating a ready check system for the game at the start and an auto-requeue system for you and your party when the game fails to create to get you back in.

I can't see magnetic xp being welcome all that much if the range is too short. As an xp awareness tool it could help, but not as a close combat trigger. It would just favour close range heroes too much and those who can quickly wave clear. Will the magnet reach from tower firing position to those hiding behind the walls or will they have to suicide for xp when under pressure? If it doesn't reach far enough it would lead to people abandoning defense for offense more often. If they are as close range as those damn probius crystals, no thanks.

And where's my 150+ Mastery Ring for Abby? :p

Even Mephisto's skins from last year's portraits and sprays is there. Maybe they are going to make the one for Butcher as well. Interested in seeing that train in action.

I have to agree with the exp thing being easily ignored, but its some incentive to sit in a lane I guess. A very trivial one at that.

Ever play The Butcher and get that sting in your gut when you can't pick meat up because it's behind a gate or would be too dangerous? Now everyone gets to experience that with experience orbs!

Feeling sorry for Abathur players here.

Well, more frustration is brought in the following situation - you kill an enemy hero with your basic attack (I more specifically mean melee range), dying shortly after (e.g. second or half a second later). Yet, it turns out you did not collect it, despite literally standing over it. Here I would like to remind that meat collection has a tiny pickup range, so you do not have to be exactly standing "ON" the tiny blood icons to collect them.

This is so frustraing. I have had this numerous times, with extreme cases when had I picked up the meat from a takedown, I would have had the quest complete. Soooo frustrating.

So no Xp from lava wave? That would be the biggest nerf.

It always seemed ridiculous to me anyway; depushing entire lanes, with objectives and/or camps in them AND getting a load of exp from that... they could balance it by lowering the cooldown. Although I would redisign it to burn the lane significantly, but not clear it - leaving some HP so that somebody still has to push it a little, e.g. 10-25% HP. Just give him more team fight presence instead.

Actually, the devs said Lava WaveLava Wave and SymbioteSymbiote would continue to work as they do now, with maybe some other exceptions (maybe Globe of AnnihilationGlobe of Annihilation ?).

And if you watch some of the gameplay videos from the Blizzcon floor you will notice that the "magnetic" range of the exp globes is about half a screen away, even if they move kinda slowly to your hero.

What made me scratch my head was that apparently the exp globes didn't appear if an ally close to you delivered the killing blow, or if they were closer to to the minion when it died. I wonder it the exp orbs only appear to one player at a time.

So the real question is - how is the exp actually counted? From what I know it already works like that - a minion wave grants the same amount of exp across the team, no matter how many teammates are present. You just get less exp per player, which is why solo laners net so much - they do not technically "share" the exp with anyone else. in other words, it doesn't matter who clears a lane, as long as somebody is actually present during it. As for the range, you can sit in the bushes near the lane, never hit a minion and still get full exp.

If I'm wrong, please correct me.

There's currently no release date for the teased D.Va rework. It will come some time after Deathwing.
In July, Heroes developers teased a rework to D.Va with the following changes:
D.Va's Mech Mode will be changed to only suffer Movement Speed reduction while Basic Attacking or channeling an ability; Her Defense Matrix [W] will gain the ability to be retargeted for a short time while it's active; The Big Shot [R2] (Heroic Ability) will be baseline in Pilot Mode. D.Va will receive a new Heroic called Micro Missiles. Based on how her Ultimate work in Overwatch, we can assume that she will fire a barrage of small rockets that detonate on impact, dealing damage in a limited radius around each explosion.  Teased D.Va Rework
      Blizzard (Source)
Based on the Developer AMA from July 2019, she can opt into a solo-laner bruiser build, a team-support front-liner build and a pretty ridiculous self-destruct/pilot build, with lots of interactions between these options. The devs also briefly outlined some changes to her abilities and talents:
Her Mech Mode will only suffer a Movement Speed reduction while Basic Attacking or channeling an ability, not at all times. Defense Matrix can be retargeted with a short cooldown while it's active. Big Shot [R2] is now baseline in Pilot mode. D.Va has a new Heroic Ability called Micro Missiles. Her rework is coming at a later time after Deathwing and they don't have a release date set just yet.
      Blizzard (Source)
We currently do not have a release date set for D.Va's rework, but we will let the community know as soon as we are able. ?

Gareth from the Into the Nexus Podcast had a chance to talk to Kyle Dates and Brett "Daybringer" Crawford about Nexus Anomalies.
Check out our BlizzCon 2019 Content Hub for more interviews and news!
      Interview Highlights
They wanted to educate the player base at the same time Deathwing is hitting, that's why they invented Nexus Anomalies. The XP Globes improve solo laning, which has become stale over time. Nexus Anomalies, in general, is a new system that allows them to be more flexible with typical gameplay updates. The goal is to have Nexus Anomalies coming out with the Season rolls (once every three months). They want them to be focused and will listen to the community and collect feedback. They have a list of about 20 Nexus Anomalies that they want to bring to the game. One of the Anomalies they've tested internally revolves around bringing back Tower Ammo, but even after speeding things up, it took too much time for Towers to reload, which felt generally bad for the game, so they decided to scrap it. Another Anomaly thing they tried was turning wizards into sappers which is something the community's asked for a whole bunch, which delivered the globe to the enemy sometimes. They're overall happy with the cadence now that there's more breathing room in between updates. They're not developing any new Battlegrounds right now. Blackheart's Bay and Haunted Mines are still being internally tested and they still haven't figured out how to fix them. Interview VOD
