Upcoming Alterac Valley Changes in WoW Classic

Blizzard announced a series of improvements coming to Alterac Valley in the near future in WoW Classic.

  • They are working on a hotfix that will make honorless targets unlootable to discourage camping the starting caves.
  • With the weekly maintenance in each region, you will be able to join Alterac Valley as a group of five, there will be no number in the name of the battleground in the "Join Battle" screen, and Alterac Valley won't start with just 20 players on a team.
  • Starting next week, the calculations of diminishing returns will be updated to match patch 1.12 of original WoW. Honor will now decrease by 10% per repeated kill in both battlegrounds and world PvP.

We’ve prepared a collection of improvements that we’re going to make to Alterac Valley in WoW Classic over the next few days. Our goal is to make surgical adjustments that address some of the more prominent pain points and unfortunate behaviors, without cracking open the substance of the battleground.

As Soon As Possible

We’re working on a hotfix that will go live soon that will make honorless targets unlootable. This is intended to further discourage camping the starting caves as an efficient activity.

With Scheduled Weekly Maintenance

Several concurrent adjustments should positively affect the initial state of each instance of Alterac Valley:

  • Alterac Valley will now allow parties of up to 5 players to queue together. When a party queues together, they will be placed into the same battleground.
  • There will no longer be a number in the name of the battleground in the “Join Battle” screen.
  • We’re fixing a setting that allowed the battleground to start with as few as 20 players on a team.

Soon After the Weekly Honor and Raid Reset

In WoW Classic (and original WoW), players who get fewer than 15 kills aren’t given any rank progress, and are given a standing amongst other players who had fewer than 15 kills. This standing is ignored and causes confusion, so it will no longer be displayed.

Finally, we’re updating the calculation of diminishing returns to match patch 1.12 of original WoW. When WoW Classic first launched the Honor System, we made the decision to decrease Honor by 25% per repeated kill. With world PvP being the only option for obtaining Honor at that time, this made sense. Now, PvP has primarly moved to battlegrounds where repetitious engagements can happen with much greater frequency. Starting next week, Honor will now decrease by 10% per repeated kill in both battlegrounds and world PvP.

Now, we just need a honor nerf to AV / buff to WSG so that premade gameplay wins against AV afkbots 🙂

There's a major change coming to WSG it seems, as the exit portals are about to be completely removed, due to players using them in "unfair ways". You'll have to /AFK to actually exit the battleground from now on:
      Warsong Gulch (source)
In approximately two hours, we will deploy a hotfix to all WoW Classic realms that disables the exit portals from Warsong Gulch. Thereafter, players who need to exit the battleground will have to use the other means of doing so: /AFK.
We’ve seen an increasing number of reports of these portals being used in unfair ways, and we feel that taking this step eliminates the potential for unfair gameplay while making no change to the intended, legitimate flow of the battleground.
As always, we really appreciate and value all of the player feedback that raised the issue. Thank you!

Update: We now have Blizzard's official post on the subject, and it seems Calamity and Progress got their kills at exactly the same time, literally in the same second, as Progress presumably got there a few milliseconds earlier, and with Apes being 8 seconds late!
      Official Rankings (source)
Blackwing Lair opened at 23:00 UTC today, and we had the pleasure of seeing guilds from all around the world charge into Nefarian’s domain and make quick work of the 8 bosses therein. Throughout the race, we captured the names of the players involved and the timestamps of boss kills from all realms in all regions.
      Razorgore the Untamed
At only six (and seven) minutes past the hour, the first guilds to complete the Razorgore encounter were:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp CN United Huhuran China 23:06 UTC Praxis Zandalar Tribe Europe 23:07 UTC For teh Horde Heartstriker Europe 23:07 UTC Vaelastrasz the Corrupt
Basking in the glory of great power, the first three groups to end Vaelastrasz’s torment were:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp Praxis Zandalar Tribe Europe 23:08:54 UTC Ashes of Time Earthshaker China 23:09:08 UTC Shao Guang Ouro China 23:09:10 UTC Broodlord Lashlayer
After a brief suppression, Broodlord Lashlayer went down first to:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp CN United Huhuran China 23:17:49 UTC RISE Incendius North America 23:19:21 UTC Calamity Mograine Europe 23:19:38 UTC Firemaw
Firemaw’s Shadow Flame barely slowed down the same three leading guilds:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp CN United Huhuran China 23:22:15 UTC RISE Incendius North America 23:24:24 UTC Calamity Mograine Europe 23:24:36 UTC Ebonroc
At this point, another guild from Europe charged into contention, and Ebonroc was first downed by:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp Calamity Mograine Europe 23:31:52 UTC Progress Firemaw Europe 23:32:12 UTC CN United Huhuran China 23:32:15 UTC Flamegor
The same three guilds in the same order ended Flamegor at 33 minutes past the hour:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp Calamity Mograine Europe 23:32:58 UTC Progress Firemaw Europe 23:33:17 UTC CN United Huhuran China 23:33:50 UTC Chromaggus
A dragon for all dragonflights, Chromaggus succumbed to:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp Calamity Mograine Europe 23:37:12 UTC APES Gehennas Europe 23:37:12 UTC Progress Firemaw Europe 23:37:22 UTC Nefarian
With less than 43 minutes elapsed, the first three guilds in the world to complete Blackwing Lair in WoW Classic were:
Guild Realm Region Timestamp Progress Firemaw Europe 23:42:21 UTC Calamity Mograine Europe 23:42:21 UTC APES Gehennas Europe 23:42:29 UTC Congratulations to every guild that planned and executed this feat so well!
      ____________________________________________________________
The new raid went down pretty fast in Classic, with three guilds getting Nefarian down crazy fast, as Apes, Calamity and Progress took around 42 minutes to finish up Blackwing Lair!
There's still some discussion as to who exactly got the World First on Nefarian, as Apes almost definitely got the fastest, but had a 7 minute delay in getting in, but so far it seems Calamity are the ones that took the big dragon down first. Warcraft logs have their own rankings, so it does seem Calamity are at the top.

In any case, let's take a look at some Nefarian kill videos, starting with the Calamity kill, unfortunately with no sound:

      Apes' kill:

Blackwing Lair is available in WoW Classic starting todayand players can finally complete their Tier 2 Sets. Here is the offical preview of the eight-boss instance.
      Blizzard (Source)
In the dark recesses of Blackrock Mountain’s peak, Nefarian, the eldest son of Deathwing, conducts some of his most awful experimentation, controlling mighty beings like puppets and combining the eggs of different dragonflights with horrific results. Should he prove successful, even darker pursuits rest on the horizon.
The ominous depths of Blackwing Lair are waiting for those brave enough to face its dangers. Gather your staunchest allies and prepare to undertake a treacherous journey into the heart of the mountain to reap the treasures within.
      Raid Bosses: 8
      Level: 60
      Location: Burning Steppes
      HOW TO GET THERE
Blackwing Lair is located at the very height of Blackrock Spire. You can enter the mountain from either the Burning Steppes or through Searing Gorge.
      GETTING ATTUNED
One does not simply walk into Blackwing Lair. One must become attuned first.
Head toward Blackrock Spire and take the passageway just to the right. Here, you’ll need to fight your way through some of the Scarshield Legion to get to the Scarshield Quartermaster. Once you kill him, you’ll be able to loot Blackhand's Command. Right-clicking it will bring up the quest Blackhand's Command.
The quest will send you into Upper Blackrock Spire to access the Orb of Command located behind General Drakkisath’s throne. You can either have your group distract him, or just kill him to get him out of the way.
You’ll be able to access an additional alternate entrance within Upper Blackrock Spire after Warchief Rend Blackhand has been defeated. You’ll need to be in a raid group to enter.
      FACE THE BLACK DRAGONFLIGHT
8 bosses await within Blackwing Lair, each with their own challenges to face and strategies you’ll need to employ to defeat them. You’ll need to coordinate closely with your raid team to be victorious.
Razorgore the Untamed: Razorgore is tasked with protecting and cultivating various black dragon eggs secreted away in Blackwing Lair. Vaelastrasz the Corrupt: Having confronted Nefarian and losing to him in battle, Vaelastrasz has been corrupted and forced to fight Nefarian’s enemies. Broodlord Lashlayer: Lashlayer is a drakonid of the black dragonflight. Even though drakonid are not true dragons, the dragonflights often use them as frontline soldiers. Firemaw, Ebonroc, and Flamegore: As members of the black dragonflight, each of these imposing dragons are under the command of Nefarian, but ultimately owe their loyalty to Deathwing. Chromaggus: A unique chromatic monster created by Nefarian, Chromaggus can harness the power of the various dragonflights against its enemies. Nefarian: The lord of Blackrock Spire, Nefarian is a member of the black dragonflight, the eldest son of Deathwing, and creator of the chromatic dragonflight. DRESSING TO IMPRESS
Players will be able to continue their pursuit of their Tier 2 set and their associated bonuses in Blackwing Lair, including bracers, belts, boots, gloves, shoulders, and chests.
Druid: Stormrage Raiment Hunter: Dragonstalker Armor Mage: Netherwind Regalia Paladin: Judgement Armor Priest: Vestments of Transcendence Rogue: Bloodfang Armor Shaman: The Ten Storms Warlock: Nemesis Raiment Warrior: Battlegear of Wrath Tier 2 helms can be acquired in Onyxia’s Lair from Onyxia, and legs can be earned in Molten Core from Ragnaros. May the DKP be with you.
      ADDITIONAL ITEMS
You’ll also find some additional notable items such as the Chromatically Tempered Sword, and Dragonbreath Hand Cannon. You’ll also be able to loot vvElementium Ore from the Blackwing Technician. This can be smelted to make an Enchanted Elementium Bar, which is needed as a part of the quest line to forge the legendary sword Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker (yes, we said it).
As with his sister Onyxia, you’ll be able to loot the Head of Nefarian when you defeat him, which will begin a quest and allow you to spread word of your victory.

Update: The faire is back in WoW Classic!
It seems the Darkmoon workers have had enough and took the whole thing with them, as a bug has appeared that made the faire disappear. Apparently something happened during maintenance and Blizzard are working on it:
      Darkmoon Faire (source)
The Darkmoon Faire is back on all realms.
May Sayge give you good fortune.
      ...
We had a bug rear its ugly head with realm maintenance.
We’re working to bring the Faire back as soon as possible.
