Shaman DPS

Recommended Posts

I have been using Shaman (elemental specifically) since WoTLk exclusively.  Until patch 5.4 everything was great.  5.4 comes out, and all of a sudden my DPS takes a hit.  no new add-ons, nothing changed on my side.

Obviously something must be different.. I didn't really experiment with different builds, but I insist on using unleashed fury, because it's what I like.  Even before 5.4 was still using unleashed fury.

Other than that I follow the recommendations on this site for rotation and glyphs.

My shaman is 550 (whoopee.. -snicker-) no set bonus but I do have the cloak.  Now I go to timeless isle, dinosaur isle, and PvP, I don't RAID.  I do however LFR for valor points and for fun.. That's when I notice my DPS is subpar.

I am barely able to maintain 160K DPS.. and I am lower than other similar gear, and lower geared toons.

What's interesting is I have a Frost Mage, I do similar things, and my burst and LFR damage is WAY higher, Simulationcraft has me at 200K (somewhere in there) on Ele Shaman.  My mage is 544, and Simulationcraft has the mage at 227K.  I am not near what SC says elemental  should be, but my mage is spot on.

My disparity isn't about 2 different classes, my problem is that I am FAR off my Ele Shaman SC mark, yet with my mage I can hit those simulation numbers pretty easily.  My mage is above most everyone for similar geared toons as well.

Has anyone else noticed the shaman has dropped in DPS at all?  I see similar posts on BNet (very few however) that complains about the same thing.

Just want to point out that this is the SAME computer, running the SAME wow game, only thing I do is log out, and log into the other character.  Same add-ons either way.

TL;DR:  elemental DPS is not achieved in game vs simulationcraft but frost mage DPS is almost dead on.  I have more experience with Shaman and notice 5.4 patch changed, but my rotation has not.  What could be the problem?  Before 5.4 everything was as it should be, after 5.4 DPS dropped significantly.

Can you link some logs?  Or at least your armory?  Those could help us identify the issue.

Without that, all I can do is guess.  If you were super-mega-haste-stacked (entirely reasonable) in 5.3, when 5.4 hit your RPPM trinkets would proc less frequently since they stopped scaling to haste.  (Cloak still scales to haste, though, since its a static effect that doesn't double-dip.)  Other than that, we got a minor nerf in 5.4, but have since been buffed.  Oh, and glyphed fire elemental de-synced from everything, that also happened.  (Unless you're an enhancement shaman with elemental mastery and HWF AoC, then it's the best thing ever.)

The spec overall isn't weak, I'm always fighting tooth and nail for top dps spot in my raid group, and win it with reasonable frequency.  (Any fight with AoE isn't even a contest, I burst well over a million dps on Dark Shamans as long as I don't pull aggro off the tanks, which actually happens quite a lot and is very painful.  That's without bloodlust, too.  Even without CDs just spamming chain lightning gets up to the 900k range on trash.)

I suspect part of the issue is that if you don't have tier bonuses, that means you don't have tier gear, which means you're probably using a lot of spirit-crit pieces (since that's basically every other piece available right now), which are awful.  However, simcraft should take that into account (likely why it thinks you'll only do 200k at 550, that's pretty low for a simcraft number).

The mage simcraft is... notorious... for being an extremely rough guess, due to the complicated interactions mostly revolving around Alter Time.  Check the mage forums for their suggested alternatives if you're interested.  Kinda like how Affliction warlocks can blow the pants off of simcraft numbers with decent RNG and proper snapshotting.  Elemental shaman is a lot more linear and has less wiggle room, so simcraft is a reasonably good tool for us.

Anyway, best guesses are:

  • Poorly itemized gear.
  • Delaying CDs.
  • Priority screwiness.
  • Idling?

That's really generic, but it's all I can do without further information.

Also, re: unleashed fury, that's fine, it's better at higher gear levels but it is not going to account for a 40k dps loss over Elemental Blast or Primal Elementalist.  Don't ever bother casting unleash elements without that talent, but talented it's at least competitive, if suboptimal.  You are making sure to consume Unleashed Flame with Lava Burst and not Flame Shock, right?  (Or preferably both, if you don't have a Lava Surge proc, or get one mid-cast.)  A talent (or spec, for dps pures) you know how to use is better than a theoretically better one you don't, but you do need to know how to use it.

first lets go with armory. if you're in full spirit crit with like 20% hit chance and you have shadow pan badge trink paired with some timeless isle trink, 160k would be impressive. ilvl < itemization and your "sims" are meaningless. it's a guess tuned for current raiders only, it's got nothing to do with live gameplay.

even if youre in the gear that sims are in the ballpark for, its just to test theoretical gains relative to your current setup. sims are not goals and very few SoO fights provide an environment that resembles what the sim is executing. the fact taht your mage is dead on is just coincidental.

Intergalactic is an AOTC/Mythic progression guild now recruiting for Shadowlands raiding and M+.  We are a group of friends who were interested in the fun of raiding while understanding that life responsibilities take precedent. We are a combination of new and returning players from various expansions. While social players are always welcomed, we are more specifically looking for players who are interested in a fun, relaxed environment to progress through content. We do run M+ keys, transmog/gear and achievement runs when possible.
Intergalactic did not run as a guild during Bfa. We had members getting bored with Bfa content and decided to spend their time on other things. We did do some content with some of the guilds in our community group. Our last guild raids were in Legion. The majority of our core has come back in anticipation for Shadowlands. We are excited to be back as an active guild on Korgath and it's connected realms. We look forward to having you join us!  (Korgath is connected with  Cairne, Cenarius, Frostmane, Ner’zhul, Perenolde, and Tortheldrin.
What we expect from all of our Members:
In short, “Be excellent to each other.” We’re not looking for members filled with drama and toxicity. We’re all friends here and while we may not all agree on a particular subject, it can be discussed in a friendly, constructive, and respectful manner. A good sense of humor is a must. We aren’t looking for Members who only log in on raid days. Other events will be on the calendar, as well, and we hope that you’ll sign up and attend.
What we expect from our Raiders:
Raiders are to sign up on the calendar for events. If you are going to be late or if you will be unable to attend at the last-minute, please notify the GM, Raid Lead or an Officer as soon as possible.
Raiders are expected to log in approximately 15 minutes prior to raid start and be outside the raid with consumables and enhancements. We will provide feasts, cauldrons, and repairs. We can provide extra food, enchants, gems when available, all we ask for is either a monetary donation or help with crafting materials.
Raiders are expected to be prepared with knowledge of raid mechanics, as well as class-specific knowledge. Know your strengths and weaknesses and be willing to openly receive and give helpful constructive criticism when needed.
Raiders are expected to be progression-oriented, with the understanding that some mechanics/fights may take multiple attempts. We can’t progress through raids without everyone working as a team to try and work through the mechanics.
Raiders who are capable of playing multiple classes/specs may be asked to switch to a more appropriate character to work through particular mechanics. We maintain a smaller roster and sometimes rotate people in based on fight specifications.
Raid Days/Times: Wednesday/Friday at 8pm Server/9pm EST, possible carryover on Saturdays
Roles Needed: Ranged DPS and/or multi-spec players
      We require:
      Discord
      Deadly Boss Mods
      Details! Damage Meter (preferred)
If you think that we would be a good fit, please send a DM to Northeos, Nanami or Thawn. Or simply add us on Battle Tag.

      Hey Everyone,
So i play a Demon Hunter Lvl 120 with iLVL 464.
My DPS in dungeons is just so low compared to everyone else and i dont know why. I was in a M8+ earlier and the ilvl 450 Tank was doing more DPS than I was.
Any tips? Check out my gear/character, i think its all setup right. I went through the Icy Veins Demon Hunter guide and stat priority etc... Got a rotation, but something isnt right. Im always last on DPS even with 440 ilvl players in the group.

      Thanks for reading!

Guild: Dawn of the Dead | http://www.dotd.org   Faction: Horde | Server: Zul'jin (PvE) | Timezone: EST   Current Progression: 8/9M BoD | 2/2H CoS | 8/8M Uldir CE   We've been raiding max size raids continuously since WoW has been released and are the only guild to have done so here on Zul'jin. We have strong leadership, no drama, and plans to keep raiding for years to come. Unlike many guilds, we're not recruiting for the short term, and we don't over-recruit.   Website: www.dotd.org
Raid Times: Our schedule is 8-11 EST Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.   Needs: We are a small guild, and we expect high attendance. As such, we recruit people to raid, and desire people who can step in and contribute immediately. We don’t recruit people to sit around, so all spots are for raiders who can expect to be in most every raid.   We are currently looking to add skilled and reliable:
Ranged DPS: High: Shadow Priest, Mage Medium: Warlock 1 Healer:
      High: Resto Shaman, Mistweaver Monk

*ALL exceptional applicants will be considered regardless of the class.   What we ask of you:   Effort: Not all applicants come from highly progressed guilds, and that’s okay, but it does mean that you need to be prepared. We recruit the player, not the gear, but we do ask that you have some current experience. You need to have the best gear available to you with top end enchants and gems where available. You also need to be able to display an understanding of your class mechanics, role in a raid, and ability to learn new fights.   Attitude: It’s a game. We play for fun. How you fit in with the guild is taken very seriously. We’re a bunch of mostly 18-30 guys and girls who have fun playing together. While we have a good time, we also know when it’s time to buckle down and work hard.   Skill: The best way to determine skill is to see you in a raid. Because we don’t wish to have anyone transfer that we’re not serious about, be able to express your knowledge of your class and why you’re an exceptional player who would be an asset and is worth a shot. Gear will come with time. Skill will not. Impress us with your knowledge of your class and gameplay mechanics. Feel free to share any logs, theorycrafting, or other work you've done.   Commitment: We make a commitment to you, and ask you to do the same to us. A raid takes a team of more than 20 individuals working together. We rely on you to show up to raids, research your class and new fights, respect your fellow players, and notify us when you are unavailable. You rely on us for gear, experience, and coordination. It's a large investment of our time to train and gear new players, and we ask the same investment on your part so that we can each benefit.   We have a variety of informational resources available to prospective applicants on our web site: http://www.dotd.org-- please refer to our "Applications" forum for detailed information. Also feel free to visit us on WoWProgresss for more information and kill videos! http://www.wowprogress.com/guild/us/...wn+of+the+Dead   Should you wish to speak to someone in-game, please don't hesitate to reach out to an officer directly, whisper Alloren (Alloren#1606), Xanah (Xana#1662) or Jeare (Jeare#1759).   We look forward to hearing from you soon!
