Here come the traditional April Fools patch notes! This time it's patch 8.8.8, so Ion was correct in that we won't have 8.3.5 and are jumping a bit ahead! There's a whole lot new coming... some day... as we get Terrific Visions, new allied races in Mechatauren, High Dwarves and Kul Tiran Worgen, new M+ affixes, essences, micro-holidays, new flavors of Classic and a whole lot of (very serious) class changes!

World of Warcraft Patch 8.8.8 Build 88888 WORK IN PROGRESS

April 1, 2020

Tech writer note – looking for edits from all producers and team leads here. Please get back to us by EOD tomorrow, and please don’t leak this doc like one of you leaked all the new professions. Oof.

NEW FEATURES

TERRIFIC VISIONS

Now that N’Zoth is vanquished and all of Azeroth’s problems are solved forever, players will delve into future-looking scenarios that offer a new way of helping Azeroth’s champions see past the old god. With LACEC (Light Assisted Corruption Eradication Conversion), you’ll use Titan technology to step into a look at what the future might hold after everyone stops fighting.

In Terrific Visions, you’ll keep an eye on your Vanity meter while enjoying all that life has to offer. If your Vanity runs out, you’ll be forced to read Torn Pages from N’Zoth’s Diary. For example:

I am an Old God in this lonely city.
I think about sad things; no one calls me pretty.
“My name is N’Zoth” I scrawled over there.
I never meant for ME to feel this despair.

NEW ALLIED RACES

HIGH DWARVES

The long wait is finally over, and the much-requested High Dwarves are finally coming to Azeroth. There’s not really more to say about the glory of the High Dwarves that hasn’t already been said in the General Discussion forum.

MECHATAUREN

Moooove over, all you Horde races who are cursed with flesh. We’re about to raise the steaks on the udderly fantastic notion of Tauren+mechanical bioengineering. Don’t worry, we wouldn’t steer you wrong.

KUL TIRAN WORGEN

OUDVHMCWQJLW1585767467814.jpg

HIGHMOUNTAIN GOBLIN

G2LZ2ERR2Z4C1585767467822.jpg

NEW MYTHIC KEYSTONE DUNGEON AFFIXES

New affix: Legit Questioning – Within 3-5 minutes of each boss kill, 30 to 50 feral hogs run into your dungeon. How do you kill them?

New affix: Tub Thumping – With each pull, you get knocked down. But don’t worry—you’ll get up again. We’re never gonna keep you down.

NEW ESSENCE

Now, the most-accomplished and powerful players – those who do a significant amount of pet battling every single day for many consecutive days – can obtain Vision of Furrpection .

Major Power – Reflects all incoming damage. This effect scales with the number of max-level battle pets you have in your collection, to a maximum duration of 30 seconds, with a 60 second cooldown.

Minor Power– You enter stealth after standing still for 2 seconds. Thereafter, moving does not break stealth.

Developers’ note: We haven’t yet completed our tuning pass on this Essence, but we wanted to get it into players’ hands as soon as possible. We’re really looking forward to seeing if players find a use for it.

NEW MICRO-HOLIDAY: MOTHER’S DAY

She’s cared for you through so many difficulties. Now, it’s your turn to show your appreciation for her. Please make a note on the in-game calendar and actually show up for this easy quest chain. You only have to do it once per year, and it means so much to MOTHER.

NEW MICRO-HOLIDAY: MAGNI-FICENT TRAVELS

For one day only, Magni is just going to go wherever he wants and it’s up to you to find your own way there. Magni might lead you to visit your bodyguard in Nazjatar who’s kind of lonely now. He might want to go pull some pranks. When you finally get to him, have fun! Set the Stormwind Park back on fire or something.

CHANGES

CORRUPTION EFFECTS

  • Infinite Stars has to be renamed, because every time we reduce Infinite Stars by 20%, we’re left with Infinite Stars. Even just pondering it gives us headaches. How about “Many Countable Stars”?

  • Echoing Void no longer sounds like a car alarm between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. when people are trying to sleep over here!

  • Ineffable Truth can’t be changed.

  • Twisted Appendage has been given an additional twin tentacle: Twisted Sister.

  • Gushing Wound has been reduced to gush 20% less than it gushed before.

ESSENCES

  • Worldvein Resonance now hurts your ears 20% less.

  • Memory of Lucid Dreams is now 10% more memorable.

  • Conflict and Strife is now only obtainable through Fishing.

  • Vitality Conduit now yells at you in the voice of Shia LaBeouf to “Just Duit!!”

  • Vision of Furrpection has been renamed and is now called Furrification Protocollar.

MISCELLANEOUS CHANGES

  • After receiving a great amount of negative sentiment having something to do with the Big Love Rocket mount, we’ve decided to make the Big Love Rocket mount 50% larger, and give it a 200% speed boost. Thank you for your feedback.

  • Tortollan scribes are so very tired of watching you stumble around, that their standards have been lowered by 90%. Draw whatever shape you want. Go nuts. Just finish and get out of here.

  • All bells have been removed from the game. We’re not sure why, but some raccoon showed up, said something about a house, and ran off with them.

  • Essence of Fire, Essence of Water, Essence of Earth, and Essence of Undeath are no longer account-wide.

CLASSES

Death Knight

  • Death Grip never really did what it says and cause death, rather than mere inconvenience to the target, so Death Grip has been renamed Tug Throat.

  • Now that everyone is a Death Knight, we’ve added a new Death Knight ability: Directory – activate to hold up a chart that you can compare other players to, in order to figure out what race they are.

Demon Hunter

  • New ranged DPS spec: Tizzy. With a Tizzy DH, you’ll still jump around and make funny noises like there’s a bee on you, but you’ll do it from 40 yards away.

  • Eye Beam has been given those new high-intensity bulbs, and now blinds everyone in front of you for miles.

Druid

  • Added a new Druid ability: White Claw – disorients you and frustrates your enemies. It shows up everywhere, even though you’ve never once heard anyone say that they like it.

  • Shaking a Druid while in Tree of Life form now has a chance to spawn a swarm of angry wasps.

Hunter

  • Beast Mastery Hunters whose pets do 70% or more of the player’s total damage are now given a comfy bench to sit on during fights.

  • Freezing Trap is now 30% less effective on targets who keep a sweater at the office.

Mage

  • Mages who say in voices comms that they’re putting down a portal to Boralus, but then it’s actually a portal to Dalaran Crater, are awarded the Achievement “Why Do They Fall For This Every Time?”.

  • Blink distance reduced by 50%. You guys really need to tone it down with the Blinking. It’s gotten out of hand. Don’t make us turn this Blink around and go right back where we came from! Stop Blinking! I’ll give you something to Blink about!!

Monk

  • Ironskin Brew and Purifying Brew are now noticeably less hoppy than they were a few years ago during the hops craze.

  • New Mastery: Savasana. All Monks have transcended to an elevated state of being, where the answers to all problems are beyond the need for violence. Monk characters are prevented from casting any damage-dealing abilities or using any attacks whatsoever. Namaste.

Paladin

  • Lay on Hands no longer causes your hands to get all tingly and numb and then you wake up and shake them and they feel so weird.

  • Divine Steed updated to look less like you’re just running away from a fight, except when followed by the use of Divine Shield and Hearthstone.

Priest

  • Xal’atath, Blade of the Black Empire voicelines updated in the hopes that you’ll start using it again. You used to be so close and nowadays you barely even see each other. Baby please come back.

  • Corrected an issue that would occasionally cause Holy Word: Serenity to take the sky from you.

Rogue

  • Rogues who save their Sap can now make it into a nice syrup.

  • Rogues who use Cloak of Shadows, Vanish, and Shadowstep in rapid succession now disappear from the game altogether.

Shaman

  • No adjustments needed.

Warlock

  • Seed of Corruption must now be planted in the correct time of year and moisture, or else it will become Flowerpot of Disappointment.

  • Doom duration increased to be a really long time, but not so long that you’d call it eternal.

Warrior

  • Heroic Leap now occasionally ends in a pirouette.

  • Pummel now looks even more misspelled if you stare at it.

WoW CLASSIC

Following a tremendous amount of feedback, we’re happy to announce that WoW Classic now comes in three new old flavors:

  • WoW ORANGE VANILLA

  • CHERRY WoW CLASSIC

  • DIET DR. CLASSIC

There are no changes to WoW Classic in this patch.

It's time for another WoW in other games edition, as redditor LapisBroSammy has gone through a lot of trouble to remake Dalaran in Minecraft! We've already seen similar projects, like the Atal'Dazar, Orgrimmar and Stormwind, Arathi Basin, and even Lich King projects, so this one fits in very nicely! It a project a few years in the making and is looking damn impressive, especially since It was made in Survival mode, but with mob griefing turned off. Let's take a look at some highlights, and you can check out the full imgur album here as well.

We already know that regardless of other factors in an expansion, WoW's art team will always create top-notch quality environments and effects, but with Shadowlands it seems they're really outdoing themselves. Whether it's the rich canopy of the weird and otherworldly realm that's inspiring them, some of the places we'll be going in the new expansion are really quite something. Today redditor felplague noticed just how awesome some of these designs are, spotting a weather effect in Maldraxxus that wasn't quite rain or snow...
It's these kinds of environmental details that really bring the zones and the entirety of Shadowlands to life, creating a real world we get to play in, and we really should try to focus more on things like this in general.
You can check out more detailed videos here, here and here.

We're on to Warlocks, as our expert Motoko shares his extremely positive thoughts on the DoT king of WoW, Affliction, as it's getting some great new features and is set to be an excellent spec in Shadowlands! He goes over the new and changed abilities and talents, Covenant choice, legendaries and even condiuts to give you a really good overview of the spec which is poised to be a top contender if tuning holds.

Exciting Changes for Affliction Warlocks in Shadowlands
Following the recent expansion trend, Warlocks gets yet another substantial rework in at least one specialisation, and it is Affliction's turn in Shadowlands. A seemingly marginal change of a new spender had a dramatic impact on the gameplay, the feel and the strengths. Increased AoE and multitarget burst capabilities, and a very strong execute synergy with one of the Covenants make Affliction in Shadowlands a specialisation extremely promising in terms of versatility, desirability and last but not least, enjoyment.

      Gameplay Changes
Unstable Affliction no longer consumes a shard and is now limited to 1 application at any given time with an extended duration of 21 seconds (similar to what has been in the past). It still generates a shard if the target dies while the debuff is applied (rank 2). the Contagion passive which granted 10% additional damage on targets afflicted by Unstable Affliction has been removed.
Dark Soul: Misery does not trigger a Global Cooldown.
Demonic Circle is now baseline, instead of a talent choice.
Fear has a second rank where you no longer suffer spell pushback while casting the spell.
Shadow Bolt now applies Shadow Embrace (without the talent which has been removed), increasing your damage dealt to the target by 3% for 12 seconds, stacking up to 3 times.
Shadowfury now has a 1% mana cost.
The cast time of your Demon Summoning has been increased from 2.5 seconds to 6 seconds.

      New Abilities and Talents
Malefic Rapture  is the new spender, both in single and multi target, enabling burst windows on any target in line of sight as long as they are affected by at least one periodic damaging effect. The damage scales with the number of unique effects present on each target.
Curses are back in the menu. Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Tongues and Curse of Weakness are now baseline Warlock spells that can by applied with the limit of 1 per target.
Ritual of Doom has returned, with a 1 hour cooldown in exchange for up to 15 minutes of Doomguard as extra pet.
Fel Domination is a new baseline cooldown that reduces your next summon demon cast time by 5.5 seconds, removing the associated shard cost.
The Inevitable Demise Azerite trait has been ported as a talent in Shadowlands, replacing Death Bolt (now a pvp option) in the first row.
Sow the Seeds now embeds a 3rd additional seed, compared to the Battle for Azeroth iteration.
Howl of Terror has been reintroduced as talent option in the 5th row, instead of the now baseline Demonic Circle.
Dark Caller  is a new talent in the 6th row taking place of Shadow Embrace which is now a baseline passive.

      Covenant Abilities
      Kyrian Ability - Scouring Tithe
Deal (100% of Spell power) Arcane damage instantly, and (144% of Spell power) over 18 sec. If the enemy dies while affected by Scouring Tithe, you generate 5 Soul Shard. If they survive, Scouring Tithe's cooldown is refreshed.
A periodic damaging ability with a relatively high maintenance that contributes to Malefic Rapture damage. Its flexibility lies in being able to trade the DoT uptime for 5 extra shards whenever you can snipe a dying target, which can potentially enable you to cast 10 Malefic Raptures in a short timeframe for incredible burst.
Designed mostly as a single target option, the shard gain part gives this spell some multi-target scaling, resulting in a well rounded option in any kind of situation.

      Necrolord Ability - Decimating Bolt
Hurl bolts of decimating magic at your target, dealing [4 * (50% of Spell power)] Shadow damage and increasing the damage of your next 3 Shadow Bolts or Drain Souls by 200%. Decimating Bolt's damage, and the bonus to Drain Soul/Shadow Bolt both increase as your target's health decreases.
A straight forward single target nuke that empowers your next 3 casts of a normally weak filler, in the case of Drain Soul translates into absurd single target and especially execute potential. An extremely popular (and overtuned) choice in Beta, this ability emphasises Single Target damage potential with relatively low maintenance and the flexibility of a generous buff timeframe.

Night Fae Ability - Soul Rot
Wither away all life force of your current target and up to 3 additional targets nearby, causing them to suffer (100% of Spell power) Nature damage over 8 sec. For the next 8 sec, casting Drain Life will cause you to also Drain Life from any enemy affected by your Soul Rot, and Drain Life will not consume any mana.
Consumes 20% of maximum health when cast.
Perhaps the most controversial and undertuned ability among all Covenants, Soul Rot attempts to turn Drain Life into a spell that is part of the rotation. While the synergy with the Inevitable Demise trait is strong (and potentially a nightmare to balance), the spell itself is nothing but underwhelming. It supposedly encourages casting Drain Life during the duration but Inevitable Demise stacks will be consumed after the first channel, not to mention since Soul Rot is yet another periodic damaging effect, you want to cast as many Malefic Raptures within those 8 seconds as possible, while still being able to channel at least 1 Drain Life when talented with Inevitable Demise, before the debuff expires.
As of now, while the ability is definitely interesting in its design and has a unique niche of 2-4 targets, it does not have enough appeal to justify the choice over other Covenants, and this issue is somewhat mitigated by the Inevitable Demise synergy for Affliction, meaning it is incredibly mortifying on the other 2 specs.

      Venthyr Ability - Impending Catastrophe
Call forth a cloud of chaotic anima that travels to the target enemy, dealing (100% of Spell power) Shadow damage to enemies in its path. When the anima reaches the target it explodes, inflicting either Curse of Weakness or Curse of Tongues, and dealing (261% of Spell power) Shadow damage over 12 sec to all nearby enemies.
The more AoE focused covenant ability, Impending Catastrophe is poised to become the go-to option for multi target scenarios like dungeons, where on top of a reasonable AoE Damage over Time, it also allows the application of a second curse once a minute. The damage over time component synergises with Affliction's Malefic Rapture and can also be extended by Summon Darkglare, making the Covenant a very attractive pick for any aspiring Warlocks in the Shadowlands.

      Legendary Effects
Among all the legendaries available in Shadowlands for Affliction Warlocks, the following ones are the most interesting and promising (in no particular order). You can check out all Warlock legendaries here as well.
Malefic Wrath greatly boosts the power of Drain Soul, creating an extremely powerful synergy with Necrolord Covenant ability Decimating Bolt and turning Affliction Warlocks in arguably the strongest single target spec during execute.
Sacrolash's Dark Strike is back from Legion and coupled with the talent Absolute Corruption looks to become a must have in any situation where slowing multiple targets permanently is necessary.
Wrath of Consumption offers yet another damage increase for multitarget, empowering the Warlock whenever targets die while affected by Agony.
Perpetual Agony of Azj'Aqir offers a flat 20% shard increase, which translates in 20% more Malefic Rapture or Seed of Corruption casts.

      Conduits in Shadowlands
Many conduits have been introduced in Shadowlands to allow further customization and additional power, below are listed the Affliction specific options:
Corrupting Leer has the potential to turn affliction into an AoE powerhouse with a 20 second burst window every 2 minutes gameplay loop, particularly interesting when coupled with Venthyr's Impending Catastrophe and Dark Soul: Misery for dungeon runs.
Cold Embrace increase the damage bonus of Shadow Embrace from essentially an extra stack at level 1 to an increase of 6.75% overall damage at rank 15.
Focused Malignancy increases the base damage of Malefic Rapture on targets affected by Unstable Affliction, giving Affliction yet another means to boost its single target output.
Rolling Agony is mostly a quality of life change, reducing the amount of global cooldowns required to maintain Agony, which can be a big deal in situations where there are a high number of targets and Affliction becomes a very busy specialization, often limited by its own global cooldowns.

      Conclusion
Affliction is shaping up to be a powerhouse of a specialization in Shadowlands, with increased capabilities in multitarget, burst, AoE and execute compared to Battle for Azeroth. While ultimately the tuning will dictate who will be on top and who will be toned down, its current toolkit will ensure that no matter the changes, playing Affliction will be a safe bet due to the flexibility of a spec that can perform well in virtually any scenario while also offering high mobility. The newly added Malefic Rapture is a fantastic addition: it is compelling, it gives Warlocks an increased fluidity in the rotation and a satisfying AoE spammable nuke with enough room for optimization, that turns an otherwise plain specialization into an exciting, fun and rewarding experience.
