The Mob and Race Kingdoms of Classic and Vanilla: a Political Map

Recommended Posts

We have some more very interesting maps to take a look at, as redditor ChromeDragon has created a new territorial/political map for Classic/Vanilla, featuring both the civilized races and the somewhat more savage/adversarial mob races as well! These two maps are also interesting to use as comparison to how things changed later down the line in Warcraft's history, especially with the Cataclysm and more recent, tree-burning and Warfront events.

We start off with the new map, featuring the less civilized or forgotten races of Azeroth or rather the player antagonists int he game, those that don't show up on other similar maps. They don't hold quite as much territory, what with players coming in every 2 minutes and ransacking their homes, but it's still interesting to see where some of the more prominent settlements are. From Murlocs to Furbolgs, Centaurs, Harpies, Quillboars and so on, there's many of them out there controlling a lot of territory and while there might be some missing, it's still a great overview!

The exact description from ChromeDragon for the above was "Basically a political map of azeroth if you removed all the races capable of building two story buildings", which sparked quite a fun conversation over on reddit, so make sure to check that out as well.

And then there's the older, more traditional map, created quite a while ago, covering the territories of the races and tribes we're more familiar with, from playable races to NPC ones, like Orcs, Night Elves, Dwarves and organizations like the Scarlet Crusade, Cenarion Circle etc.

I like maps like these. I remember a long time ago looking at a map of where all the ogres were residing - it gave interesting context to connecting the dots following warcraft 2 and warcraft 3. if you're a fan of those games, I think these maps are especially fun to look at.

Another announcement, another meme onslaught. This time around the Jailer seems to have gotten the brunt of it, as his appearance in the story video inspired many fan interpretations, with some amazing one and some with... genuinely frightening connotations.
We'll start with my personal favorite, as it's the perfect It's Always Sunny meme and a pretty damn good Avengers one as well, so big congrats to dorm_five!

After that excellent Dr. Strange/Khadgar crossover we move on to a more general one, as CD Projekt Red gets some of the heat as well:

And then we're right back to the Jailer, who looked a lot more intimidating before the redditors went at him, as they zeroed in on his wonderfully luscious lips:

Then we have a solid use of the new WoW meme format:

And even though we already covered this one before, the new Santa deserves one more look.

But we saved the best (worst?) Jailer one for last, and we assure you you won't look at him the same way after this one, as Alshainkt really nailed it:

In case you weren't aware, the November 23rd Shadowlands release date comes exactly 16 years after the original World of Warcraft release date, to the day! Whether this had any effect on the actual date choice is unclear, as it wasn't mentioned in any of the official posts, but it's a great coincidence if it didn't!
This also means that the Anniversary event will be live when Shadowlands launches, as it usually lasts from November 16th to the 30th (with the last event actually taking place over 2 months, since it was the big 15-year one). Even though we haven't gotten any specifics on it, it's safe to assume we'll at least be getting the same things as the usual yearly anniversaries. This actually includes a 16% XP Celebration Package buff, which will make leveling to 60 even faster, unless Blizzard decide to somehow modify it so it doesn't work in the Shadowlands. You can check out what was available in addition to the XP buff during the last non-15-year event here.

Maybe we can get a re-issue of the 15th anniversary Collector's Editions? Please Blizz?
So, there are many reasons to rejoice when Shadowlands comes around, and it's really great that the release date coincided with the exact 16-year anniversary of Vanilla!

Update: Game Director Ion Hazzikostas has now also commented on the issue.

As we just got the official Castle Nathria raid release schedule, including Mythic releasing on December 15h, it seems the World First race (and everyone else heading into the maximum difficulty at launch) will be clearing it during or very close to the holidays. This was somewhat unexpected, and I personally even thought they might delay the Mythic part of the raid specifically for this reason, but we now know that isn't the case.
As you'd expect, it didn't take long for the community to bring out an old blue post where Blizzard specifically state that they don't want players to have to play during the holidays:
As mentioned in the tweet, the key word there is "try", so Blizzard were very much aware of their own policy when making this particular decision. There were less subtle and understanding/constructive posts as well, with titles like "Times change I think. For the worse." and similar, as well as some actually pretty great meme-y posts:

The reality of the situation is a little more complex, as the raid race itself will likely be finished in the first reset, at least for the very top guilds, but there are many, many more guilds outside the top 10 (or even top 100) that will still be pushing and playing during the holidays. While delaying Mythic only would have been a weird and unprecedented decision, players would probably understand, and the top raiders that will be racing would welcome it, but it seems it's set in stone now, so at least we get some World First entertainment just before and probably during the holidays as well!

Here comes a response to the holiday-related release of the first Shadowlands raid from Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, as he talks about how a potential delay would affect the pacing of the expansion and how trying to avoid situations like this isn't always possible. The response comes in relation to a WarcraftLogs tweet and a reply to it, as originally spotted by Wowhead.
