Scourge Invasion Event Has Been Buffed on Live Servers

A while ago during the pre-patch PTR I wrote an article on how the Sourge event was massively nerfed after the initial mayhem it caused on the test realm. We went from scenes like this:

To basically having to look around a capital really hard to even find 1 zombie.

But, Blizzard seem to have changed how the event works now that it's arrived on live servers. One simple tweak has made the event more dangerous and game-changing, as some players are reporting being flagged for PvP as soon as they enter their capitals. This means that they are vulnerable to zombie attack, as previously on the PTR you had to opt-in to PvP to be in any danger whatsoever. However, this didn't work when we tested it ourselves, but this could be due to NA servers having received the update while EU haven't (although we did receive the ICC rare spawn timer hotfix).

Even if it is happening, it seems that you can still turn PvP/War Mode off, since you're in the capital, so it would still be a pretty weak buff. New players also receive a buff making them safe after exiting Exile's Reach, so it's not too overwhelming for them in any case.

The actual zombies themselves are also pretty underpowered, and it's not that easy to get players and NPCs infected, but at least with this change it's possible. There's also plenty of potential for mischief, with summons and hearthstoning not removing the infection, so that players can perhaps spread it to less populated areas where they have a chance to survive longer.

Another thing that may be happening soon is the zombies themselves getting stronger, as that's how it worked back in the WotLK event, as they grew more powerful as the event continued. We don't really have a lot of time left in the event, however, so we're hoping if this happens it'll start soon.

The change has seemed to cause at least some proper havoc in some places, with the denizens of several servers sharing several cool images from the invasion, which is now an actual invasion!

Moon Guard in particular had a pretty nasty outbreak, but seeing as it's an RP server, and famous for its RP events, so they may have cooked these up themselves, but they're still great nonetheless!

"Stormwind on Moon Guard has become the newest Left 4 Dead level, everyone is trying to rally at the Cathedral for safety."

It's not all as dangerous as it seems, as some servers can handle the outbreaks before they get too intense as well:

So, in closing, while the auto-PvP flagging is a step in the right direction, we're hoping Blizzard amps the event up even more and we get to see some real mayhem before we head into the Shadowlands!

I fail to see how forcing someone into an activity they have no interest in is "a step in the right direction"...

Because in order for this event to work and for it to portray what Blizzard want it to (a massive invasion of undead throughout Azeroth), it could not function as an "opt-in" event where the majority of players are completely immune to it... It only lasts a few days so it's not too big a deal.

Sorry ‘it only lasts a few days it’s not a big deal’ is how the last one got cancelled it has to be opt in or nothing

How is coming back after 7 months and the first thing that's happens when I log into SW is being forced into PvP mode so I then get ganked so repeatedly that I want to quit the game again "not a big deal"  There are dozens of other ways to portray a massive wave of undead other than forcing people into PvP.  This event doesn't make it feel like there is a massive undead invasion, it just makes it seem like Blizz and a lot of players are jerks who enjoy ganking the people who've played the game for years with no interest in PvP and reinforces the belief that Blizz is completely tone-deaf to players and what they actually  want.  If you have to force people into participating in an event there is nothing epic about it other than the ineptitude of the people who designed the event

Welcome to modern Blizzard. Pick between 3 for every "feature":

 - Doesn't work

 - Half-@ssed (come on IV even that word is PG13, wtf?)

 - Too early

 - Nerfed and buffed and nerfbuffed again.

 - Forced down your throat

 - Promises unfulfilled

 - Expensive/P2W (HearthStone)

 - 15 years too late (i.e. banning multiboxing)

That is a very bad excuse, sorry but if they are going to FORCE players into pvp, i will have to say this: Blizzard can go F themselves. IF they keep doing this during stupid and dumb and utterly pointless events, the game will get closer and closer to dying.

if it cant work without forcing pvp on players then its not working at all cause this is not a pvp game this is a game with the option to pvp and if blizz robs me of the choice just because no one works there who has the brain to come up with a funny way to to it with npc they shueld just cut the zombie thing an give us mor nice story quest to enjoy and lead us to the next xpac

every one who supports and trys to justify forct pvp is most likely some one who liked the old days of pvp serves and misses ruining the game for people not ito this crap its worse enough npcs are giong to die over and over so you cant turn in a quest or look at the auction house

The best way to have done this is to use War Mode as the way to do the event.

This is one of those "obviously not what we hope it is, but maaaybe?" things as Henry Cavill, who was part of many discussions about who should play Arthas last year, just posted an interesting image to his Instagram, as spotted by Warchief_Hammerhands.
This is 99.99% Witcher-related, and the caption is just a tease (whether it's actually aimed at the Arthas hype or not), but we have seen the actor actually talk about the role of the Lich King previously. In several Instagram replies to one of the many fan photoshops of himself as Arthas, Cavill did seem to show some solid interest in the role, and it all started with an emoji response to this post:
And here's the complex response, with Blizzard getting tagged:

He then engaged in some fan interaction, starting with a nod at the previous rumors of him being the next Bond:

And great response to a fair warning related to Cavill's missing his Man of Steel casting call because he was playing WoW:

Many have actually commented that Cavill might be a bit too old for Arthas at this point, but considering the events on 9.1 and where the story might be going, who's to say an older, post-Maw Arthas isn't in the cards? It seems like a perfect stunt commercial type thing to tease a potentially bigger project like a TV series or even movie. After all, Metzen himself approves of Cavill in the role!
But, getting back down to earth, this seems much more Witcher-related, with Season 2 of the show  still being shot, as Covid slowed things down. The Instagram post is probably just a tease that they're still shooting the show (possibly the finale, as the script seems to be relevant) and we're just getting too excited. But why shouldn't we get excited? A Warcaft TV show is just too good of a fit, even an animated one, so any movement we can stir up there can only be positive!

We're sure you're all Cavilled-out at this point, but there's another development in the fan/Chris Metzen/Christie Golden casting of Superman as Arthas, as the man (of steel) himself has replied to a recent photoshop of him as the Lich King over on Instagram. We start off with two cute/amazing fan interactions, as someone in the thread asked him what his WoW name was and the reply was pure gold:

The second was a fair warning related to Cavill's missing his Man of Steel casting call because he was playing WoW:

And finally there's the big one, even thought it's small, as Cavill tagged Blizzard with a thinking emoji:

And while usually with social media posts like this you'd assume they were made by some PR intern or similar, considering Cavill's love of WoW and the specificity of some of the replies, we can be pretty sure he was the one responding. Here's the full Instagram post:
And just in case you missed it the first time, here's that story of Cavill missing the call that he got the Superman part:

The Great Vault raid loot requirements have finally changed on the 9.0.5 PTR in this week's Build 37705.
As we reported last week, Blizzard planned on changing the raid loot requirements for the weekly chest from 3/7/10 bosses down to 3/6/9 bosses, but Blizzard did not implement the change until this week's Build arrived on the 9.0.5 PTR.
Here's the updated Great Vault tab with the new requirements.

We've got some great news for you if you don't do Mythic Keystone Dungeons. In Patch 9.0.5, you can upgrade base Mythic Dungeon gear with Valor Points up to Item Level 200.
In this week's (third) 9.0.5 PTR build, we noticed Mythic gear has 12 ranks in the Dungeon Journal, which means it is upgradable with Valor from Item Level 183 to 200.
