How to react to getting both Brain Freeze and Fingers of Frost

Recommended Posts

As far as I can tell, this specific situation isn't mentioned anywhere in the frost mage guide: if you get both Brain Freeze and Fingers of Frost from a single cast of Frostbolt, and you've already started casting the next Frostbolt, do you:

1. Let the cast finish and cast Ice Lance, potentially wasting a Brain Freeze proc

2. Let the cast finish and cast Flurry > Ice Lance > Ice Lance, wasting at least one Fingers of Frost proc

3. Try to cancel Frostbolt quickly and cast Ice Lance, then Frostbolt > Flurry > Ice Lance > Ice Lance, to avoid wasting any procs

Frostbolt itself will never proc both at once. Orb could be active though, or you could have BF and you're committing to BF usage when the Frostbolt procs FoF.

Regardless, 2 is the answer. It's why a lot of theorycrafters have tried to convince Blizzard to add some form of FoF refund mechanic if hitting a target with Winter's Chill active. The Flurry combo is worth significantly more damage than the single FoF, so you will always prioritize it.

If we were robots and had perfect reaction speeds, 3 would be optimal but it's only within the first 200ms of the Frostbolt cast starting, and messing it up even once over the course of a fight wipes out all the gains you made from doing it.
