The Season of Mastery is coming soon to WoW Classic Era realms, giving all players an opportunity to start fresh, but with slightly more changes like faster leveling, disabled world buffs in raids, removal of the 16 debuff limit, and more. Read on for details.

Highlights

Players who wish to start anew on WoW Classic Era realms will notice a few changes in the forthcoming season titled: Season of Mastery. These include:

  • Faster phase unlocks; the plan is to have a 12-month cadence, with phases unlocking every couple of months.
  • Raid bosses will be more challenging. Some boss mechanics that were removed will be restored.
  • The 16 debuff limit on bosses will be removed.
  • World buffs will be disabled in raids.
  • The health of raid bosses will be increased to offset the debuff limit and world buff removal.
  • Leveling from 1 to 60 will be faster. The plan is to have TBC XP rates.
  • Meeting Stones will be converted to Summoning Stones.
  • Increased Mining and Herbalism nodes.

Greetings, adventurers! WoW Classic Season of Mastery is coming, giving all players a chance to start fresh and a level playing field. This time around, we’re planning #slightlymorechanges.

We will launch new WoW Classic realms for Season of Mastery. These realms will invite new and current Classic players to begin fresh at level 1 for a complete reset of WoW Classic’s content, starting again at the very beginning of the World of Warcraft saga.

What’s different in WoW Classic Season of Mastery?

As with the first release of WoW Classic, we’re planning six content release phases. In WoW Classic Season of Mastery, however, phase unlocks will happen faster. We’re planning for a 12-month cadence, with phases unlocking roughly every couple months. Here’s the current outline for the six phases:

Phase 1 (WoW Classic Season of Mastery Launch)

  • Molten Core
  • Onyxia
  • Maraudon
  • PvP Honor System and Battlegrounds (up from Phases 3 and 4)

Phase 2

  • Dire Maul
  • Azuregos
  • Kazzak

Phase 3

  • Blackwing Lair
  • Darkmoon Faire
  • Darkmoon deck drops begin

Phase 4

  • Zul’Gurub
  • Green Dragons

Phase 5

  • Ahn’Qiraj War Effort begins
  • Ahn’Qiraj raids open as the war effort dictates

Phase 6

  • Naxxramas
  • Scourge Invasion

Raid Boss Updates

The original release of WoW Classic was made to re-create the difficulty and challenge of patch 1.12 from the original World of Warcraft release. While we strived to bring a faithful re-creation of that release, many raid encounters turned out to be easier than the first time around—players simply were more experienced and prepared, and patch updates greatly increased player power.

With that in mind, we’re planning a few changes to make those early raid bosses pack a bit more of a punch, and attempt to recapture the original challenge they presented. These changes currently include (but are not limited to):

  • World buffs (like Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer and others) disabled in Raid instances
  • Restoring mechanics that were removed early on to some Raid bosses
  • No boss debuff limit (up from 16 debuffs in WoW Classic)
  • Increased health on bosses, to offset player buffs and the removed debuff limit

Our intent with these changes is for this experience to feel somewhat more challenging than WoW Classic did in 2019.

Due to Season of Mastery’s faster content release cadence, we’re also planning several improvements and changes. These include:

Faster Leveling

We’re planning on increasing experience gains from what they were in the first iteration of WoW Classic. Our current plan is to set them close to what the 1-60 XP rates are in Burning Crusade Classic™ with a bigger focus on quest XP increases.

Quality of Life Updates

In addition, we’re planning on introducing certain improvements that weren’t in the original WoW Classic release, but that we think can help create a better experience, such as:

  • Meeting Stones converted to Summoning Stones
  • Increased Mining and Herbalism nodes

Realms tend to be more densely populated in WoW Classic compared to the original 2005 design. Increasing gathering node spawns should provide a more consistent economy this time around.

WoW Classic Season of Mastery will have an Open Beta beginning on October 5. We look forward to hearing your feedback on these changes and many others as we continue to iterate on them. Keep an eye on the forums and https://worldofwarcraft.com/news for the latest developments.

No thanks. This is Golden Classic_Era, not the Simplified Retail that's been converted to please all the lazies for manyyy years now. Surely hope that many of these that prob. are added even if people say no, would be optional as in can disable from settings. If not then most likely to drop sub & no more cash to Blizzard from my wallet. That is unless they're removed, new IP comes out or Remaster of WC3 gets reworked. It's release was shameful & Devs who worked on it should be put to GOT's 'Walk of Shame' :/

WoW's gameplay received some dumb simplifications even on Shadowlands expansion & Blizzard had guts to call them as part of 'QOL' changes :D To Dear Blizzard who seems to be doing a lot of these 'wasted time' changes around Azeroth: Please merge many Golden Classic_Era realms on all continents. Thanks :P

For all the anti-vanilla, those recent time were great

Glad they're new realms. I'm a simple pleb. The authenticity is cancer, but the cancer is the fun!

Season of Mastery's Soul of Iron/hardcore/ironman challenge has proven to be quite fun for many players, and difficult as well. However, there are some that are making the 1-life mode a LOT harder for those that visit Stormwind, and the players that get taken down in the seeming safety of the Alliance capital have some... harsh words to share with the perpetrator.
Kiting the elite dragon Teremus to Stormwind is a 17-year-old tradition at this point, however due to the Soul of Iron mode in Season of Mastery, it is perhaps not as funny for some today. Taestiranos aka Frond has been playing how to train your dragon (onto players) for a long time now, and he's continued this practice during Season of Mastery as well, taking down some hardcore/Soul of Iron players, and as you can imagine, their responses weren't too positive (this is from one day only):

And here's the actual event that prompted some of the messages:

However, this isn't a Frond-only situation, as there's an even bigger threat over on Obsidian Edge, the unofficial hardcore server where there's plenty more Soul of Iron players, as someone else seems to have had the same idea:

That's a lot of souls ironed. And here's a meme to close it all out:

Only a day behind the softcore version, we have the Soul of Iron/hardcore/ironman max level challenge completed, as two players reached level 60 at the same time!
Well-known Classic streamers Tommysalami and Tactical were quest-leveling together and reached the final level at the same time as well, only 3 days and 4 hours after they started (which is only 12 hours slower than the softcore 60 we covered yesterday). Here's the clip for the double-ding, as spotted by gandalf45435:

A very interesting bit of trivia here, the spot they finished in is actually the same spot another famous speed leveler, the actual first WoW Classic 60, JokerD actually died in earlier this week as he lost the hardcore challenge at level 50:

JokerD is also a little famous for ninjaing a staff from Molten Core, after which he was removed from his esports org!
But back to the actual first Soul of Iron 60ies in the Season of Mastery: congratulations to Tommysalami and Tactical!

Have you ever gotten ambushed by an entire world event that isn't due for over 8 months? No? Well, it seems Season of Mastery is really demanding a lot of mastery, including the ability to survive the Ahn'Qiraj gate opening event invasion quite literally sneaking up on you! The Old Gods really are powerful, as they seem to have started interfering with the game's code now too.
Therinlahhan fell victim to such an unprovoked time-traveling attack, as the elite Anubisath mobs jumped him after a crystal spawned in the middle of the Barrens - with the Horde defenders showing up as well, only for it all to literally disappear 2 minutes later!

Luckily it wasn't hardcore/Soul of Iron, so not that much harm done, but I do have to say that despite this being a pretty hilarious bug, I wouldn't mind temporal incursions like this one being an actual feature. Well, perhaps not literally insta-spawning an entire event on top of a player, but you get the idea.
I also wanted to mention one of the best comments in response to this little event, as phurbain may have come across the oldest Old God plot in the game:
Looks like we found out what happened to mankrik's wife

We have a 60 ding in the Season of Mastery, as Zarant_ managed to solo-quest his way to the maximum level first! As spotted by Wowhead, he did it using the (paid, with a 1-20 trial) RestedXP  guide and addon (which he also contributes to) on a Beast Mastery Hunter, aka the king of solo. It took 2 days and 16.5 hours and you can check out the final moments below!

With Season of Mastery now live worldwide, we're highlighting some of our new Classic guides.
The Season of Mastery hub covers everything you need to know about the new chapter of Classic. Season of Mastery introduces the Soul of Iron system, officially acknowledging the Hardcore Classic community by providing you with an in-game buff and related cosmetic ability that proves your character has never died. We updated our Onyxia and Molten Core strategy guides to reflect the latest adjustments made to the encounters in Season of Mastery. We also ranked all DPS, Tank, and Healer specializations by their performance in Season of Mastery. Finally, the gear available in Season of Mastery Phase 1 slightly differs from the gear available at the start of Classic, so we've updated all the corresponding class BiS guides with the relevant information: Balance Druid Feral Druid DPS Feral Druid Tank Restoration Druid Hunter DPS Mage DPS Holy Paladin Protection Paladin Retribution Paladin Shadow Priest Priest Healer Rogue DPS Elemental Shaman Enhancement Shaman Restoration Shaman Warlock DPS Warrior DPS Warrior Tank
