Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick Reportedly Leaving the Company After Microsoft Acquisition is Complete

Recommended Posts

Sources close to The Wall Street Journal say Activision's long-time CEO Bobby Kotick will be stepping down after the acquisition by Microsoft is complete.

Microsoft today announced their acquisition of Activision, Blizzard, and King studios for $68.7 billion. Later came two official announcements surrounding the acquisition. The first one came from Microsoft and the second from Activision Blizzard.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick sent an e-mail to the staff about the acquisition. You can read an excerpt here.

The latest news about Bobby Kotick's departure comes from The Wall Street Journal. Apparently, the long-time CEO will leave the company when the deal closes.

Bobby Kotick, Activision’s longtime CEO, is expected to leave after the deal closes, according to people familiar with those plans. Microsoft had said in its announcement Tuesday that Mr. Kotick “will continue to serve as CEO of Activision Blizzard,” and that after the deal closes “the Activision Blizzard business will report to Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer. ” But the companies have agreed that he will depart once the deal closes, the people said.

In an interview Tuesday, Mr. Kotick didn’t specifically address his status after the deal closes, but said he has told Microsoft he will “always be available to ensure that we are going to have the very best integration.”

Interesting whether his friends, who are on Activision's board will leave as well. Is this acquisition a good thing or not? We will have to wait and see. I am skeptical. Too bad he gets to leave with a gigantic paycheck, while not facing any consequences for tolerating or ignoring abuse and other forms of misconduct in his company.

I mean at the state Blizzard is now, it cannot be bad?

For sure, some improvements are needed. At least they seem less tolerant of abuse and harassment, so this is good. What will happen to their games though? Will they get better or their strategy will remain mostly the same, just to exploit whatever is left of them? Besides, there are concerns about monopolies forming.

Time will only tell imo.  But after reading some of the articles pertaining of the current status of Shadowlands and 9.2 it's not worth my time or money to subscribe to World of Warcraft.  But with any company aquisition, specially Blizzard/Activision, there will most likely be 'clean house' objective, new rules/regulations within the company, along with understanding and following set procedures/guidlines on select named products and another wave of 'changes' (some small while others are more subtle) within the mmo at either a gradual or eratic pace.

Who knows I might be wrong and the next World of Warcraft Expansion can reach all new heights and give other mmo's a run for their money.

It can't really be that hard on MicroSoft.  If they assign a small staff to read the forums and see what players who really play the game complain about or say we want, they'll already have a preloaded regression test and pile of bugs to fix.

And a probably-in-conflict list of possible improvements (it being not every player wants the same thing)

Blizzard used to have awesome releases, albeit always shoddy server issues. Diablo 3 was the first time I ever thought a Blizz product felt somewhat empty and unfinished.

Agreed. If only the releases are catastrophic, thats a way less problem, than bringing finished BS like Reforged or shallow husks of crap like BFA or SL. Which drove myriads of WoW-refugees to FF14 and NW.

I have no hopes of anything getting better, I´ll just wait.

A complete turn is necessary. While ignoring what others do better, with no clue whats happening, repeating old errors again and again, they disfigured the once behemoth of mmo´s into a bloated, fast-food theme park of shiny nothing.

Yes, that kept the drones playing, because they always did and dont want to leave, but turned WoW into a disgrace of what it once was.

It's too big an investment and Microsoft has long been looking to expand its roster of IPs in gaming. I don't think Candy Crush and CoD alone would be worth 70 billion. I am sure Diablo and Overwatch have expansion potential as IPs.

Sadly I am no longer sure that is true for WoW. On one hand companies still invest in MMOs and given how insanely expensive they are to make, that must mean the numbers are there. But I just don't have any faith in the current WoW team, both as far as overall design goes and definitely not as far as story goes. So Microsoft may well be tempted to just keep WoW as a cow and keep milking it; low investment in the product and just expanding monetisation to get the whales to pay for the product.

On the other hand though I do have hope that there are Microsoft developers who are looking to work for a new project, who love Blizzard games like so many in the gaming community do, and who would want to move to Blizzard and try their hands on the game.

That is inevitable if they have the means to do it. Luckily it's Microsoft and not Disney.

Monopolies are definitely not inevitable and perhaps one of the main concerns of capitalism is busting monopolies since they are the very antithesis of the free market. In the EU at least, anti-trust legislation on the continental level has teeth and attempts to forge monopolies have continuously been thwarted by the neo liberals in the EU parliament with backing from the center and center left. Sadly the US has not shown the appropriate concern for how erosive monopolies are towards capitalism in years but there are some glimmers of hope (though they are probably far more motivated by politicians afraid of how much power big tech has over their seats than any actual concern for the health of capitalism).

Well, on the plus side Bobby's Golden Parachute is so heavy it might crush him? 😛

Seriously though, he's going to come out of this filthy rich (moreso) and that is just wrong.

True, although Candy Crush overshadows everything by income, while CoD is second. Then there is Blizzard and they are way behind, of course there is still a lot of money to be made. Another thing are those studios and brands under Activision Publishing, they already have established console presence, some of these might be later excluded from Playstation. Back to Candy Crush and aquisition of King, this might be bigger than it seems, Microsoft went from having little to no presence on mobile games market, to being one of its leading companies, by King alone.

I agreed about Diablo 4, it has potential and Immortal might be played a lot as well, despite many negative reactions to it. Overwatch is in a worse spot right now, long wait and content drought already cost them many players and loss of interest. It's going to be hard to regain player's attention and prove to them that game isn't "dying". Even its e-sports aren't as big as they expected, depends if they are still willing to throw more money at it. Game needs more support, but also (imo) they have to decide if it should be more of a casual game or competitive e-sports, because they seemed to be stuck somewhere in the middle.

Now, I'm not expecting dead brands or titles to suddenly be resurrected. Likely nothing will change for Heroes of the Storm or other games that aren't actively supported anymore. You might be right about WoW, while it is still profitable, it could remain mostly the same, targeting to milk current and returning players, while not doing much to attract more. We will have to see how next expansion is going to be and if they are going to stick with this model, perhaps they might be pushed to do f2p model and/or switch to developing only large patches, instead of full expansion model.

Here's a collection of hotfixes for Dragonflight, Season of Discovery and Cataclysm Classic for the past week, featuring class tuning in SoD, plenty of Season 4 fixes for retail most focused on items, and plenty more.
      Hotfixes (Source)
      Classes
Fixed a bug with damage dealt by Rip and Tear, Internal Combustion, and Tear Open Wounds in Awakened raids. Dungeons and Raids
Raid Finder now required item level 463 if the raid is Awakened. Brackenhide Hollow Addressed an issue where Stinkbreath can turn while casting Stinkbreath. Addressed an issue where Wilted Oak’s Necrotic Breath visual can be out of sync with the creature’s facing. Items
Veteran track items or items obtained from Awakened Outdoor Activities should now properly be able to be converted into Class Set items at the Revival Catalyst. Resolved multiple issues with Dragonflight Season 4 tier set items not functioning after equipping certain Season 3 set items. Dreambound gear caches from the Dreamsurge Coalesence vendor will now correctly award Season 4 Explorer 1/8 (item level 454 gear) and tokens will properly display the correct item level of its contents. Fixed an issue that prevented Tiered Medallion Setting from functioning on Season 4 necklaces. Fixed an issue preventing Season 4 crests from properly converting to their lower-tier currency. Season 3 (Dreaming) crests are now correctly removed from players’ currency tabs. Players have received a small amount of gold for their unused Dreaming Crests. Players can now earn up to 120 crests of each type per week in Dragonflight Season 4 (was a maximum of 90 per week in Season 3). This will allow for up to 8 upgrades per week, per crest type (was 6 in Season 3). Developers’ notes: For players who don’t reach their maximum crest earnings in a given week, we’ve implemented the increasing-seasonal-cap system from previous seasons. Please note that this increase is likely applicable to Season 4 only. We expect the weekly maximum to return to 90 for The War Within Season One. Quests
“A Multi-Front Battle” can now be completed. Resolved an issue where abandoning the quest “Something Worth Celebrating” could make it unavailable. Cataclysm Classic
The dates for Children’s Week have been adjusted so that the holiday begins and ends three days later than previously scheduled. Season of Discovery
Using an Unconscious Dig Rat no longer dismisses pets. Mage Displacement no longer functions if the most recent use of Blink was on a different continent or in a different instance. Players who have completed the quest “Warranty Claim” but have misplaced their Pristine G-7 C.O.R.E. Processor before handing in the quest “Salvaging the Salvagematic” may now speak with the Lost and Found vendor Rix Xizzix in Booty Bay to recover the misplaced quest item. Fixed a Sunken Temple issue where the Atal’ai Defenders encounter would not reset properly. Druid The Natural Weapons talents now increases all damage done by druids in Season of Discovery, instead of just physical damage. The Gale Winds rune now reduces the mana cost of Hurricane by 60%. Swiftmend no longer consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth effect on the target when used. Developers’ notes: Please note that it does still require Rejuvenation or Regrowth to be on the target to be used. Hunter Rapid Killing now reduces the cooldown of Rapid Fire by 80% (was a reduction of 2 minutes). Chimera Shot weapon damage percent increased to 135% (was 120%). Explosive Shot base damage before attack power increased by 50%. Sniper Training has an additional new effect: while Sniper Training is at 5 stacks, Aimed Shot is instant. Serpent Spread now causes Multi-shot to apply Serpent Sting to its targets for 12 seconds (was 6 seconds). Steady Shot now deals 100% weapon damage (was 75%). Developers’ notes: There are more adjustments coming for Hunters. In general, we intend to improve the ranged playstyle and diminish the melee playstyle so that the two become more equivalent. Paladin Seal of Righteousness damage can now be critical hits. Sacred Shield’s duration is extended to 60 seconds (was 30 seconds). Crusader Strike has now gained an additional effect: Crusader strike now refreshes all judgement effects active on the target to a 30 second remaining duration. Seal of Martyrdom can now “twist” with other seals, including Seal of Command. Developers’ notes: Seal twisting was an interesting emergent effect that became popular during the original Burning Crusade, that utilized the slower server messaging system used in early versions of WoW to slightly extend the duration of the paladin’s active seal for a short time whenever a second seal was cast. This effectively allowed paladins to momentarily gain the benefit of two seals at once if they timed the application of a new seal to line up perfectly just before their weapon swing. We recreated this playstyle in Burning Crusade Classic and since then it’s been a popular request in other versions of original WoW, including Season of Discovery. As the game matures and we continue to listen to player feedback however, we recognize that for some, this is part of the charm and uniqueness of playing a paladin during those early eras of WoW’s history. We consider this change to be experimental and we will watch the performance and behavior of Retribution closely after this change. Priest Shadowform now increases all shadow damage done by 25% (was 15%). Rogue Saber Slash bleed now stacks up to 5 times. Saber Slash bleed now also increases the impact damage done by Sinister Strike and Saber Slash by 15% per stack for the rogue who applied the bleed. Saber Slash bleed now deals 3% of the rogue’s Attack Power in damage per tick (was 5%). Shaman Mental Dexterity now only triggers from dealing damage with Stormstrike and Lava Lash, and it now lasts 30 seconds (was 10 seconds). Burn now increases Flame Shock Damage by 100% and flame shock DoT duration by 6 seconds, and causes Flame Shock to strike up to 5 targets (was 3 targets). Developers’ notes: We’ve received a lot of feedback about the overall usability of mental dexterity, particularly for Elemental Shamans. This ability was not intended to be used by elemental, so the adjustments we’ve made are to help ensure its usage is a bit more enhancement-centric. To compensate, we’ve increased the output and usability of the Burn rune, with a slight quality-of-life improvement in the form of a Flame Shock duration increase which allows two Lava Burst casts to be used within a single Flame Shock duration.

Next, we're looking at the Priest changes that went live in the second Alpha build. We've got some updates to Discipline's Atonement, and some tweaks to Shadow Priest's Collapsing Void.
      Priest
Atonement - Power Word: Shield, Flash Heal, Renew, Power Word: Radiance, and Power Word: Life apply Atonement to your target for 15 sec. Your spell damage heals all targets affected by Atonement for 40% 35% of the damage done. Healing increased by 50% 70% when not in a raid. Collapsing Void - Each time Penance damages or heals, Entropic Rift is expanded by 1 yd. After Entropic Rift ends, it collapses, rapidly dealing [ 120% of Spell Power ] Shadow damage up to 8 times to a random enemy, based on how many times it expanded. Each time Penance damages or heals, Entropic Rift is empowered, increasing its damage and size by 20%. After Entropic Rift ends, it collapses, dealing [ 500% of Spell Power ] Shadow damage split between all nearby enemies.

We'd like to introduce you to a game-changing nameplate addon for Season 4 that's essential for excelling in Mythic+ dungeons. Here's Quazii Plater!
Tracking every mob and their abilities in Mythic+ can be overwhelming, but this addon excels by replacing standard mob nameplates and cast bars to enhance your gameplay.
Once installed, mobs with critical interrupts will display a thick orange cast bar, while less crucial ones will show a thinner yellow bar.

Mobs with less crucial interrupts will have a thinner yellow cast bar.

Additionally, any mobs that inflict heavy frontal cone damage are marked with an arrow and feature orange cast bars. A voice alert will also prompt you to move by announcing "front."

The addon further assists by indicating non-interruptible spells that require crowd control with a purple cast bar and a vocal "cc" alert.

For tanks, if you're not holding aggro, the nameplates of the mobs will turn red, quickly showing you which ones to target.

There's also a handy visual cue on the cast bar, surrounded by a green border, signaling when you can interrupt an ability and your interrupt skill is off cooldown.

      Ready to try it out?
You can download Quazii Plater here.
For setup assistance, watch Quazii's comprehensive video guide.
Quazii has also created a Mythic+ cheatsheet that details all critical abilities for Season 4 dungeons, available in a text format.
If you appreciate Quazii's contributions, consider supporting him on Patreon.
