Mythic+ Affix Adjustments in Season 3

It's a big day for Season 3 announcements it seems, as we have another post explaining changes coming with next week's maintenance. The focus here is on Mythic+ affixes, most notably Necrotic, with an in-depth explanation behind the decision.

With each new season of Mythic+ dungeons, we take time during the development and testing of the content update to consider how M+ affixes have been working, design and implement new affixes, adjust dungeons where necessary, and add new dungeons.

M+ is played by a diverse range of players, so we try to make sure our feedback sources are just as diverse, to maximize our chances that we’ll spot pain points, knowing that different types of players have different experiences in M+. We look at data and statistics, forum posts, streams, and of course, we play a great number of keys ourselves at various levels and discuss our own experiences internally.

A major focus in these efforts is always how different weeks “feel” for players. An example of this was the adjustment to Ingra Maloch in Season 2. Player feedback was aligned with our own experiences that the penalty for missing a burst damage check felt overly punishing and made the dungeon less fun, and we didn’t want to wait too long to dial in the fun.

That said, a sense of mastery is a very important part of Mythic+, and changes that invalidate player strategies or otherwise involve relearning aspects of the game can have a negative effect on that. With that in mind, we prefer to make those types of changes at the start of a new season. For example, we felt that there was too much stress on tanks in Shadowlands Season 1, so going into Season 2 we sought to address that with our approach to the Tormented affix as well as changes to existing affixes.

For Season 3, our experiences again aligned with player feedback, and:

  • We’ve made adjustments to the affix rotation to break up Necrotic and Sanguine, as this combination could overburden tanks.
  • We’ve also made a change to the duration of the Necrotic affix to afford tanks more control over their ability to reset stacks.

As always, thanks to everyone who tested M+ dungeons on the Eternity’s End PTR with us, especially those who reported bugs and submitted thoughtful feedback. You made a positive impact on Season 3 and our future efforts in M+.

We're in week 11 of the Sepulcher raid, so it's high time we switched our focus over to Mythic, with over 126 guilds having finished the raid at maximum difficulty. As we move to Mythic we're also taking a look at the individual boss charts, so you get a better idea of what's happening where (and we're also still covering Heroic at the end as well).
      Mythic
      95th Percentile
We don't have a comparison point for the high percentiles in Mythic, since it's the first week of the switch, but we can compare it to last week's Heroic chart. Destruction is the very top of the pile in Mythic (and you can read about why in last week's entry), both in the high percentiles and overall, but Frost DK is doing just as well as it is in Heroic, actually beating out Demonology in the higher difficulty. Marksmanship is also in a much better position here, and Retribution is especially benefiting from the increase in difficulty, as it's 8 spots higher than in Heroic!

95th percentile Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      All Percentiles
We do have a direct week-to-week comparison in the all percentiles chart, and here we see Demonology actually climb up a spot and take 2nd place away from Survival. Retribution actually falls a little as Havoc takes its place in 9th and Windwalker pushes it out of the top 10, while Feral nose-dives down 9 spots towards the bottom.

All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Halondrus
Moving on to the individual bosses, Halondrus is where Enhancement shines most, closely followed by fellow melees Assassination and Feral.

All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Anduin Wrynn
Anduin isn't quite the main reason Destruction is doing so well, but he's definitely contributing, as Survival and Frost get their fill here as well.

All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Rygelon
The Destruction booster himself, as you can see Rygelon's Scouring Tithe interaction brings the Warlocks to the very top in the overall rankings, with the VERY few Feral Druids popping up to the top here as well.

All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      The Jailer
The Jailer is more in favor of the other Warlock flavor, as Demo is making its name here, while Ferals gather in a more respectable number to show that the Rygelon placement wasn't necessarily a fluke.

All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Heroic
While it's relegated to the bottom of the post, Heroic is still very relevant, with much higher numbers of players giving its data a lot of validity and credibility. This week we see a new No.1 in the overall bracket, as Demonology takes over from Survival and Shadow bumps Enhancement down one, with Balance doing the same to Marksmanship.

All percentiles Heroic data by Warcraft Logs.

As always, if you want even more info on a spec, you can check out our class guides here, for a DPS tier list you can go here, or for even more data, head on over to Warcraft Logs. You can also check out our Sepulcher raid guides.

After a long time of only being available via the Overwolf app, CurseForge has announced that it is now once again available in standalone form! The CurseForge addon manager app Alpha is now available and you can download it over on their site (but be careful to click the right link):

This arrives as a reaction to a prolonged period of some players voicing their dissatisfaction over the client only being available via Overwolf, and was revealed together with a larger announcement of the CurseForge API being released  (you can read the full version here), and here is the relevant section:
We take community feedback seriously. Many of the community members voiced their preference for a leaner approach to managing mods. We’ve taken this into consideration and developed a standalone version of the CurseForge app on Windows, based on Electron, which you can download here.
As with the Linux version, it currently supports World of Warcraft only. We plan to keep this version in feature parity with the Overwolf version in the future. Please note, this is fresh from the oven and currently on Alpha.
If you have any questions or feedback about this, please join our Discord and let us know.
This was initially spotted by scytherz over on reddit, and you can check out that thread for plenty of comments on the new app's functionality, relative light weight, and other details players have tested.

We're looking at a strange bug that affects some proto-drake mounts on live servers.
Many players are reporting issues with their proto-drake mounts on Reddit. The first report is from 5 days ago. The bug affects Reins of the Time-Lost Proto-Drake, which for some reason, no longer flies in the middle of the screen, and its run animation is twice the speed of other proto-drake mounts.

Apparently, Reins of the Violet Proto-Drake is experiencing the same issues while Reins of the Ironbound Proto-Drake and Reins of the Rusted Proto-Drake work as they should.

The second report is from 3 months ago and showcases the strange mount animation. It claims that all proto-drake mounts except for those from Ulduar are affected by the bug.

Did you experience this strange bug on live servers?

Patch 9.2.5 appears to be the first update to the game where major story elements remain heavily encrypted. In the latest PTR update, Blizzard shipped an encrypted 9.2.5 splash screen, which is something they've never done before.
Players are prompted with a splash screen when they log in to the game for the first time when an update goes live. It shows you what's new in the patch. Here's the splash screen for Patch 9.2.

The splash screen for Patch 9.2.5 was shipped in the latest build, but it is encrypted and cannot be previewed. Maybe it has something to do with the mysterious Stormwind and Orgrimmar updates or the Forsaken (spoiler alert).
However, the splash screen text for Patch 9.2.5 is available for preview but contains no spoilers.

Reddit user nazranramlee noticed something interesting while visiting their local hospital in Malaysia. The TV was showing the Mists of Pandaria trailer on repeat.

Apparently, this isn't specific to just one hospital in the country.
Reddit user aimlessart saw the same trailer playing over and over in another hospital they have been visiting for over 6 years, claiming they both might have been set up by the same contractor who thought the Mists of Pandaria trailer looked visually appealing for entertainment purposes.
The contractor most likely never bothered to update the visuals again, which is why the TVs are constantly running the same Mists of Pandaria trailer while people wait in queue.
