What's Ahead for Wrath Classic (Developer Update)

Blizzard just shared a developer update on what's ahead in Wrath of the Lich King Classic and the small changes they're implementing in the next Classic installment.

Wrath Classic will come with some changes that the developers highlighted in the official blog post:

  • The difficulty of Naxxramas, the first raid tier of Wrath Classic, will be increased. They made the raid too easy when Wrath launched and don't want to repeat the same mistake.
  • They're exploring the idea of 10/25-player raids dropping the same items.
  • They want Heroic dungeons to stay relevant throughout the whole expansion.
  • The developers are thinking about increasing the starting difficulty of Heroic dungeons and adding improved drops.
  • Heroic dungeons will be updated with "Challenges" over the course of Wrath Classic that provide better rewards.

Wrath of the Lich King Classic provides new opportunities to make a few changes that will improve the gameplay experience in the next chapter of Classic WoW. In this Developer Update, the World of Warcraft Classic Team takes you through some of those changes and what they can mean for the future of Wrath Classic.


#SomeChanges

When World of Warcraft Classic first launched, it followed a very strict design pillar: #NoChanges. At Blizzard, we faithfully recreated World of Warcraft as it existed in 2006, with as few changes as possible, while still making it able to run in the more modern environment of 2019. But World of Warcraft didn’t stop in 2006. It continued to evolve and change over the years. So, we re-released the Burning Crusade expansion last year in 2021, and plans are underway to re-release the Wrath of the Lich King expansion.

However, as we re-release these expansions, we find the design pillar #NoChanges isn’t sufficient anymore. With World of Warcraft’s expansions came design changes to the game, and some of those changes were not consistent with the way Classic World of Warcraft felt. It’s undeniable that the latest 2021 modern expansion, Shadowlands, feels very different than the original launching game in 2004. Where should the evolution of the game stop, if we want to retain that Classic feel even while releasing new content? Many players today choose to play Classic WoW because they love that feel, and don’t want it to be lost. The World of Warcraft Classic team has given this a lot of thought, and we would like to share with you today our design pillars for what we call #SomeChanges.


Nurture and Protect Social Experiences

The first and most important design pillar is: Nurture and Protect Social Experiences. The compelling social experiences within World of Warcraft are why many of us first fell in love with the game. To retain these experiences, we want to help players build friendships and deepen their relationships within parties, raid teams, guilds, and server communities. Online social experiences are a complex phenomenon and can be very easy to damage. Positive relationships build community, reduce toxicity, and forge friendships that have kept players coming back to our game for many years. We need to nurture and protect these relationships. One very big key to this is providing “Social Proximity” in our game, or what some cognitive scientists call “Repeat serendipitous interactions”. Put a little more simply, you need multiple interactions over time with the same people in a way that feels happy or beneficial. Classic WoW provided this in abundance, where you would often meet the same people from day to day while running through the Stranglethorn Jungle, on your way to a Scarlet Monastery run, or heading into Blackrock Mountain for a raid. As we roll out new expansions for WoW Classic, the pillar of protecting this Social Proximity helps inform our decisions about features like dungeons, raids, quests, phasing, and tools for finding party and raid members. When we make changes to Wrath of the Lich King Classic, we will make changes that help maintain Social Proximity, and in so doing, nurture and protect social experiences.


Approachable and Familiar

Another important design value for us is: Approachable and Familiar. We want you to feel like you are coming home to a place you know well. Classic’s combat pacing is more deliberate. Class designs are more familiar, with fewer changes from patch to patch. Classic often tells simpler stories about a particular place and time. We love to see players with intrinsic motivations founded on exploration, experimentation, and wonder, in addition to pursuing more powerful items and epic storylines. Classic WoW provides players with a sense of agency over their character’s destiny, telling their own player story about how they explored and interacted with the world. Dungeons and raids in Classic are most often defeated through careful preparation: collecting consumables, perfecting gear sets, mastering class skills, and memorizing encounter details. We want to maintain that approachability and familiarity.

This pillar works to limit the changes we make, as that familiarity can be easily damaged. But it also encourages us to make changes when an excessively complex system can be reworked into something more elegant and easier to understand. A good example of this can be found in the Emblem system from Wrath of the Lich King, which became needlessly complex and confusing by the time we defeated Arthas. We’re planning for each raid tier of Emblems to work the same, with one Emblem dropped by the latest raids and used to purchase gear equivalent to those raids, plus a second Emblem dropped by dungeons and older raids and used to purchase less powerful items. We’re hoping a few small changes there can make the system more approachable for everyone, but still fill the cherished role it served in the original Wrath of the Lich King.


The World is the Main Character

The third and final design pillar of the Classic WoW team is: The World is the Main Character. We want you to maintain the feeling of being immersed in a living world (of Warcraft). We love your exploration and your player-driven stories and want to make sure you have a reason to visit various locations in the world over and over again. Gathering and crafting professions are important to that sense of world, and of its economy, where you are interacting with thousands of other players in a vibrant player community. This pillar means we need to preserve the world we have created from excessive changes. You should be able to collect the lost pages of the Green Hills of Stranglethorn, to rescue the town of Darkshire from Stitches, or to return to Tempest Keep and face off against Prince Kael’thas one more time (and hope for rare mount drop). You should be able to tell your personally unique stories about your exploits, even as you follow along the epic stories of Azeroth’s most famous personalities.


Wrath of the Lich King Itemization Changes

Those pillars can come across feeling very abstract. So, we want to give you a concrete example of how we are applying them to changes for Wrath of the Lich King Classic (WotLK). We’re taking a hard look at itemization in that expansion and have decided to make some changes we think will help improve the experience. Taking our pillars and applying them to itemization, we’ve come up with four goals for making changes to WotLK itemization:

  • Foster a vibrant player ecosystem engaging in all WotLK instanced content.
    • Serves: Nurture and Protect Social Experiences
  • Maintain a healthy density of players enjoying Heroic dungeons throughout the entire expansion.
    • Serves: Nurture and Protect Social Experiences and Approachable and Familiar
  • Preserve nostalgic itemization elements.
    • Serves: Approachable and Familiar and The World is the Main Character
  • Provide a consistent itemization scheme across all expansion phases.
    • Serves: Approachable and Familiar

That first goal is all about nurturing our WoW communities. We know players in Burning Crusade Classic have experienced a great environment with raiding. Players are active in multiple raids at all four raid tiers, participating in both 10-player and 25-player raids, and raiding with their alts and in pickup groups at all tiers. We want to make sure that continues in WotLK. To further this, we've been exploring a lot of ideas that we've decided not to implement at this time, such as 10-player and 25-player raids dropping the same items, Heroic dungeons getting improved drops, or increasing the starting difficulty of Heroic dungeons. One change we have decided to make, is to increase the health and damage of monsters in Naxxramas. Our 2008 design intention was for it to be a little easier than the 2006 original, but we missed the mark and it ended up much easier than we intended. Bringing up the difficulty a bit will make for a more fun and interesting challenge while awaiting the opening of Ulduar.

The second goal is about making sure Heroic dungeons stay attractive throughout the entire expansion. The Emblems and items they drop should always be valuable, even late in the expansion. They should also remain an interesting challenge throughout the entire expansion, rather than becoming excessively easy as your gear improves. We are exploring plans to add challenges to Heroic dungeons as the expansion proceeds, which would also provide more valuable rewards.

We also want to preserve nostalgic itemization. No matter what changes we make, we will ensure all WotLK raid and dungeon items can still be acquired, as well as their unique art.

Finally, the itemization and raid lock systems for Wrath of the Lich King evolved several times during the expansion. Rather than changing per phase, we want to make it more consistent. This means that Emblems should drop and work in the same way every tier, set pieces should be acquired the same way every tier, and ideally raid lockouts should function the same way every tier. To support this, both 10-player raids and 25-player raids will drop Emblems of Valor at launch, while dungeons will drop Emblems of Heroism, matching the design pattern for Emblems that was used in Trial of the Crusader and Icecrown Citadel.


#SomeChanges

We hope that this glimpse of the in-progress itemization design helps you better understand how we plan to adhere to these pillars as we move forward. Each time we consider a change to the Wrath of the Lich King experience, we will keep these pillars in mind: Nurture and Protect Social Experiences, Approachable and Familiar, and The World is the Main Character. If the change doesn’t serve them, then we won’t make it. But, if the change can strengthen those pillars, we will carefully consider it. As always, our goal is to deliver the best possible World of Warcraft Classic experience to you, our dedicated players.

These sounds like a good ideas. Heroics were indeed too easy, I only rember having some issues in Halls of Lightening. They could adapt it to a difficulty similar to the last 3 dungeons like Halls of Reflection or most Cata heroic dungeons.

I am so happy they dropped all that "no changes" nonsense. There is no compelling reason not to fix mistakes from the past. We all live and learn,  it isn't smart to repeat mistakes for nostalgia's sake. I remember Sarth 3D 10 man being considered the hardest fight in T1 Wrath, will be interesting to see how it stacks up now. My mage had a hell of time on that in the past.

Brings me some thoughts of what comes after WotLK, and why they´re open to changes. Its ok to drop no changes, as I think this is the final chapter with the classic thing. 

We got the big 3, Vanilla/TBC/WotLK, experienced the time of WoW´s greatness again But thats it. I dont see a big hype for any expansion after that, except Legion and thats just 6 years ago.

      GETTING FLIGHT CERTIFIED
      To learn Cold Weather Flying, you must be level 77 and know Expert Riding or Flight Form (Druids). When you're ready, head to the following trainers to learn:
      Hira Snowdawn, who roams Krasus' Landing in Dalaran. Hira also offers the Tome of Cold Weather Flight, which allows your alts to learn Cold Weather Flying at level 68. Roxi Ramrocket at K3, Storm Peaks. Pilot Vic at River's Heart, Sholazar Basin REPUTATION HELPS

Each alt that you plan to level through Northrend will need to be sent a Tome of Cold Weather Flight if you want them to be able to take to the skies at level 68.

      It's official now. After Wrath Classic's release date briefly appeared on the official site and was later removed, it's now been confirmed by Blizzard that it, in fact, releases on September 26, 2022.
      The Joyous Journeys Experience buff is also live in Classic, increasing XP requirements by 50%.

      An iconic part of the original Wrath of the Lich King, the WoW Classic team shares some insights on the Battle for Wintergrasp development in Wrath Classic.
      As a part of our ongoing development for Wrath of the Lich King Classic, we’ve been hard at work on the Battle for Wintergrasp and wanted to take some time to go over our plans for this content. We have a lot to talk about in this article, but we wanted to start off by sharing that the Battle for Wintergrasp will be available in Wrath Classic as an instanced battleground, similar to Alterac Valley. This was not a deliberate design choice so much as a necessary change due to the nature of WoW Classic and the way that our realms function.
      A Little Background
      To understand more on how we got here, we thought it might be helpful to give a refresher on how WoW Classic was built. From the start, we very much wanted the game to feel like it did in 2004, with a single contiguous world where all players could interact with as few immersion-breaking or awkward moments as possible. In modern World of Warcraft, each zone can be “sharded” to allow thousands of players to congregate in a single zone but spread over several different copies of the zone. These “shards” are self-balancing, and when a certain shard gets too full, players can find themselves transferred to another shard. For WoW Classic, we didn’t feel like it was a great solution for population management due to how antithetical it is to the idea of a single shared world. However, we knew going into it that there would be a large demand to play the game when it was released, but we weren’t sure at the time how that would play out as the game matured. If we configured the servers to allow even double the number of players allowed in-world at once, we would have needed hundreds and hundreds more realms than we had at launch, and we had some serious concerns about what would happen when realms started to mature, and populations shifted. Would we have hundreds of realms with low populations a few months in?
      As a result, we created the layer system. Layers allowed us to effectively create “copies” of the entire game world. When certain conditions are met, instead of creating a zone-specific shard to balance player populations, an entire copy of Azeroth is spun up. There are also additional rules and protections in place around when you are moved from one layer to another to minimize occurrences when experiencing the effects of the world changing around when you are shifted from one layer to another. This allows you to run past another player in Westfall and then run into that same player later on in Stranglethorn Vale.
      Decisions Made
      Put simply, the Battle for Wintergrasp as it existed in 2008 is fundamentally incompatible with layers (or the modern sharding system, for that matter). Behind the scenes mechanisms, events, and scripts that control how the battle is initiated, how it’s resolved, and how the rewards are given out cannot function properly across layers. We discovered this fact early on in during Wrath Classic development and spent a significant amount of time trying to find a workable solution to allow it to function as it did originally, but ultimately, we weren’t able to land on a solution that we felt would allow the battleground to function in a satisfying way on any realm with layers. We wish there were a way to recreate the original vision of Wintergrasp, but that simply is impossible with the community sizes that Classic has grown to support. So, we had to compromise, and ultimately when weighing alternatives like unacceptable performance vs. a limited-access experience that excluded the overwhelming majority of players vs. instancing the experience vs. somehow entirely redesigning Wintergrasp, we felt that instancing was the change that would cause the least harm and allow the largest number of players who wanted to participate to do so.
      As a result, we’ve had to make a tough choice to rebuild the Battle for Wintergrasp as an epic, large-scale battleground experience instead. As we set about designing what an instanced version would look like, we took note of some of the unique and iconic features of the original Battle for Wintergrasp. We decided to take this opportunity to draw inspiration from some of those features and create something unique in terms of how battlegrounds typically operate.
      Joining the Battle for Wintergrasp
      Every three hours, players in the outdoor Wintergrasp zone or in Dalaran will receive a notification that the Battle for Wintergrasp is about to begin. Players within the outdoor Wintergrasp zone will receive a queue prompt, and players in Dalaran may speak to an NPC within their faction’s area to enter the queue during a short window of time. Once queued, players will be placed into a Wintergrasp battleground, and shortly thereafter, the battle will begin. However, unlike Alterac Valley, the threshold and the minimum number of players on either faction needed to start the battle is significantly lower. This means that you could enter a battle with 40 players on the Horde side and 5 players on the Alliance side. At first glance, this doesn’t seem very fair, but the Battle for Wintergrasp had an important and (what could often be for both sides) incredibly fun mechanic that we are bringing forward into the battleground version: Tenacity.
      Tenacity is a stacking buff that *vastly* increases the power level of players on the underrepresented side. This can stack so high that players could conceivably become raid bosses unto themselves. This was a challenging and fun part of the original version of the Battle for Wintergrasp, and we felt that it was important that we brought this back in some way. We know that it can be frustrating for one faction to have long queues for battlegrounds, such as with Alterac Valley— and with the design of the Battle for Wintergrasp available only during select periods of time— we felt that it was more important to get players in the battle than for the matchmaker to be too picky about the balance of players on each side before starting the battle.
      Embracing the Essence of Wintergrasp
      Another important element of the Battle for Wintergrasp was the buff conveyed to the winning faction– Essence of Wintergrasp. This buff allows you access to additional content, such as being able to fight the Elemental enemies in the Wintergrasp zone after the battle, as well as access to Stone Keeper Shards; a special currency that players could use to purchase powerful items such as mounts, item enchantments, and recipes. Lastly and perhaps most important, this buff also conveys access to the raid zone— the Vault of Archavon.
       In Wrath of the Lich King Classic, this works in a fairly simple way, if anyone on your faction participates in and wins a Battle for Wintergrasp, your entire faction is granted the Essence of Wintergrasp and the buff will last until the next time the battle is initiated.  
       While this isn’t a perfect solution, one silver lining of this approach to the Battle for Wintergrasp is that this will allow more people to participate when the battle begins. As of patch 3.2 in the original release of Wrath of the Lich King, the battle was capped to a certain number of participants, and many servers in WoW Classic have populations much higher than the average realm in the original Wrath of the Lich King, which means it could be difficult to be selected for the battle if you wanted to participate. Conversely, if you are on a smaller realm, you may have issues spinning up a meaningful battle at all. With the Battle for Wintergrasp being an epic battleground in Wrath Classic, it enables anyone who wants to participate to do so and consistently have the battle experience they want out of it.
      Wintergrasp as an Outdoor Zone
      Wintergrasp will still exist as an outdoor PvP zone in Wrath of the Lich King Classic and will largely function just as it did outside of the times when battles were underway. Players with the Essence of Wintergrasp gain access to the Elemental Revenant Enemies in the zone, and faction NPCs will still be present. Of course, PvP flagging is always enabled too.
      We know you may have questions about this, but we are pleased to say that the new version of the Battle for Wintergrasp should be available on the Wrath of the Lich King Classic Beta sometime in the next few weeks, and more information will be available when we get to that point. We want to express our sincere regret for not being able to find a solution to allow the original version of the Battle for Wintergrasp to function in WoW Classic as it was. While we are disappointed ourselves, we feel it is more important to deliver an experience that is as close as it can be to the look and feel of the original Battle for Wintergrasp. We also want to allow as many people to participate in this content as possible while avoiding any delays on getting Wrath of the Lich King Classic in your hands. We hope that we are successful in bringing the best experience possible to you, and we’d love to hear from you once you get a chance to play it in Beta in the coming weeks.
