Method to Ban ElvUI for Future Progression

Recommended Posts

Raiding guild Method decided to not use ElvUI for future progression mainly due to the FPS issues it caused in the early raid tiers of Shadowlands.

The news comes from andybrew's stream. The guild decided to not use ElvUI for future progression in Dragonflight. Apparently, the use of the UI resulted in FPS drops in some early Shadowlands raids.

Please note that this is a very niche situation and there's no reason for you to not use ElvUI. It is a great addon, and at the end of the day, the guild is doing it just for the World First Race.

ElvUI is currently overloaded with "Quality of Life" features they stockpiled throughout all expansions and abstracts too much for the sake of sweeping the widest target audience.

Another issue that you can only fix yourself (or "illegally" get a modified ElvUI version, why "illegally" explained in the next paragraph) is the update and status pings that elvui uses through mod channels, I personally run a modified ElvUI version that spams all connected players in guild/party with version updates as I set my version to something like 420.69, just to make life harder for anyone using ElvUI until someone finally notices this intrusive feature.

Their position regarding "intellectual property" is also a brainlet one, Blizzard clearly states they have full rights to any mods, while ElvUI publishers state you cannot distribute a modified version of their addon, that looks like a contradiction to me, either you own it or someone else does.

There's also 0 reverse engineering needed to modify elvui, the source code is non-obfuscated, well commented and the actual developers seem to want to have an open source mod, so the policy of banning distribution of a modified addon is nonsensical.

ElvUI uses substantially more CPU while in combat. It is also quite prone to bugs when the base APIs have gone bigger changes.

While recent processors have gone a big leap on single-core performance on the latest years, even new processors may not be able to run a WoW with unoptimized addons smoothly.

I find it hard to believe that FPS can be degraded so much on a MMORPG in PvE that an addon must be avoided. If you can't play PvE due to FPS issues, graphics settings should be the first thing to address from a "soft" perspective. If addons continue to be an issue after making graphical adjustments, then it comes down to hardware. This just seems like a band-aid for a bigger problem that Method is choosing to not address or, possibly a misdiagnosis and incorrect solution being applied. Either way, an addon, even one as heavy as Elvui, should not be that much of a burden unless your system is either already weak or, it is being taxed elsewhere.

EDIT: Just looked at the tweet from Method and this stands out; "Our decision is mostly based on some of our raiders sucking at addon config." Yeah, poor configs can cause unnecessary resource use. It tells me there is little understanding of the situation all around. This is unfortunate for ElvUI as, regardless of any damage control efforts from Method, people will view this as an indictment of a great addon and it may lose a significant user base.

This absolutely. Been using ElvUI since its inception up to my final days of WoW (end of 2018), and anything I didn't like, I could easily rip out. And have been doing that for many years.

Blizzard just posted another War Within short story. This time, it's about Moria Thaurissan and her son Dagran II, who both play an important role in the upcoming expansion!
      (Source)
Queen Regent Moira Thaurissan is exhausted. Her son, Dagran II, is rapidly coming of age and stands to inherit leadership of both the Dark Iron and Bronzebeard Clans. But Dagran is bookish and odd: He would easily choose the company of his library over leadership. Can Moira inspire her son to take up his birthright, or will her fears for his future—and the future of the clans—prove true?

Here's a video showcasing all the smooth War Within zone transitions! You won't encounter any loading screens while moving between zones!
Suppose you remember the seamless transition between Zaralek Cavern and the Dragon Isles zones. In that case, we'll get something very similar in the upcoming expansion, as the new zones are underground and connected with various pathways without a loading screen.
The following video was created by Fleshtotem, who demonstrated all zone transitions in the War Within. First, we see how to get from Dornogal (Isle of Dorn) to the Ringing Deeps. The second transition is from the Ringing Deeps to Hallowfall, and so forth.
The zones are big, making me wonder how the game would feel without Skyriding.

In our latest story, we follow Solozerro, a player on a quest to solo Mythic Siege of Orgrimmar in MoP Remix!
@solozerro often streams his progress, so  you can catch him on Twitch!
So far, Solozerro has soloed five Siege of Orgrimmar bosses on Mythic difficulty in MoP Remix and released videos documenting every kill.
      Immerseus and Norushen
The first two bosses were the easy ones when looking at pure DPS/HP checks. Solozerro tackled them early with an Item Level of 476 and a cloak with 400k stats. Both fights were long, but the incoming damage wasn't really significant.
      Fallen Protectors
Fallen Protectors were a bit tricky. Solozerro managed to push them in tank spec during berserk at around 10% HP, but the berserk phase was rough due to the double stuns. He had to switch to DPS and figure out a way to phase Rook and Sun first, then stack them up for the He Softfoot phase.
      Galakras
The boss cannot be soloed currently, so the player skipped Galakras.
      Shamans and Iron Juggernaut
When talking about the next couple of bosses, Solozerro said, "here is where the fun begins." The DPS check to beat them before berserk is very high, so he had to min-max cooldown usage for over 20 minutes. One mistake could end in a wipe. For Iron Juggernaut, there was a 20-minute bleed effect or longer.
As for the Shamans, they had the same stacking debuff that had to be kited while keeping track of the Mythic mechanic, according to Solozerro.
      What's Next?
Right now, Solozerro is working on soloing General Nazgrim! He's doable, but you can't miss interrupts and need to constantly move because of the healing the adds provide.
Solozerro's current item level is 476 with all stats capped. His daily routine includes clearing all LFRs, all raids, all dailies, and of course, the Troves Scenario on Isle of Thunder. After that, he farms rares on Timeless Isle!

And for those curious, here are the player's cloak stats!

We wish Solozerro the best of luck, and we'll be covering his progress here at Icy Veins too!
