The Fate of Two Notable Lore Characters in Dragonflight

Recommended Posts

dS7JFu1.jpg

Datamined broadcast text from the latest Dragonflight Alpha Build 44999 reveals the fate of two notable lore characters in Dragonflight. This post contains spoilers.

The broadcast text is a conversation between Tyrande and Malfurion about Ysera. The Green Dragonflight needs Ysera back, so they will resurrect her… at a cost. Malfurion switches places with Ysera in Ardenweald.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Ysera, your flight needs you.

Tyrande Whisperwind: We need you.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Whatever the price may be for your return to Azeroth, name it.

Malfurion: Tyrande...

Malfurion: Ohn...ahra... I am sorry.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Tell us!

Malfurion: It's me.

Malfurion: I must be the one to stay.

Tyrande Whisperwind: What?

Malfurion: Ysera knows this -- though she would never ask it of me.

Tyrande Whisperwind: No.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Pathetic.

Tyrande Whisperwind: We will find another way.

Malfurion Stormrage: When she gave her life for mine in Val'sharah, it was not her time.

Malfurion Stormrage: And now... the balance may be restored.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Then... then I will stay as well.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Shandris and the others can...

Malfurion Stormrage: Tyrande...

Malfurion Stormrage: Should everything we hope come to pass, the Kaldorei will need you.

Tyrande Whisperwind: I am so tired, Malfurion.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Do not ask this of me.

Tyrande Whisperwind: After everything we have endured...

Malfurion Stormrage: My love.

Malfurion Stormrage: You have always been the strength of our people.

Malfurion Stormrage: They will follow you ever onward, and you will never be alone.

Tyrande Whisperwind: Until I see you again...

Tyrande Whisperwind: I will dream of the night we may truly rest... together.

Death doesn't really mean anything after SL, even less so when you get sent to Ardenweald. Hell, Tyrande could just go visit him whenever she wants to because there is no way in hell that there isn't a mage capable of opening a portal.

Whatever made you think there IS a mage capable of doing it.

Well, how else would they have left?

This implied love fest has no credibility.  Time and again, Tyrande has shown she'll toss Malfurion aside at literally any opportunity where she may feel needed elsewhere, or just to follow her own whims.

Seems weird to have it be Malfurion. Tyrande's just had a massive arc that she came to a resolution of. Malfurion's just been... kicking around?

Well, he's not the only one who goes "missing" for several patches. We can assume leaders are often busy with something, but they will never go into specifics. This seems like easy way to write him out, but do they really need to do this? There are many more leaders who aren't doing anything and it's never addressed.

Yeah, as you say -- why write him out all of a sudden? Why not Tyrande, whose story has come to a decent end and could be satisfyingly laid to rest for at least some time?

...this smells of the same "epic storytelling" as Vol'jin dying in Legion and deciding Sylvannas was the perfect choice because fever voices.

At least he was killed by some nobody demon out of nowhere.      Malfurion just literally gives up living by what we see there?

It also seems hamfisted to the Nth degree.    How does this logic work, how does Malfurion know this, how does it make any sense.    Malfurion was in the general zone area when Xavien used his corrupted crystal, as he fully planned to, on Ysera.    How was Malfurion supposed to be the intended target in that storyline?     How do you even start to logic her "giving her life for him"?    There was a hot pursuit and she was ambushed.    And even if this junk story logic was true, how would Malfurion have the cosmic all knowing knowledge about any of this?     Just stupid as hell.

I agree. I also think there are certain characters in WoW that are pillars, and shouldn't be going anywhere. Examples would be Thrall, Vol'jin, Varian, Garrosh, Malfurion. Even with complete character arcs, I don't see any benefit to killing these characters off, or making them disappear. If or when they do, it's always come, to me, as either shock value, or just in a disrespectful way.

I dont have a problem with these characters dying, but i really want this "death" of furion wont be a total "only to shock thing". I would be very sad, because i really like him, he is married, sleeps most of time, has a emo brother, likes animalz, he is basicly me, joking aside, he deserves a good ending if he is going to die, a high quality cinematic like saurfang, and very very very meaningfully, i always played as a tauren, but it doesnt mean i dont like other faction characters

I'm okay with characters dying too. For instance, I specifically omitted Uther as I felt his death made perfect sense in the storyline of Arthas. I just don't like when they unceremoniously get rocked, like Vol'jin, or low-key get killed like Garrosh in an in-game cutscene at the end of a zone.

I'm the same way with cross-faction characters too. If they're meaningful, I will care about them, regardless of side.

Ah yes that one character that spent 0 time in Shadowlands knows that he must sacrifice himself to ressurect Ysera. Anything to eliminate characters without Mary Sue potential I guess.

Tyrande has been the leader of the Kal'dorei for over 10,000 years already is totally affirmative action for women. Malfurion has only assumed a leadership position during wartime situations, and even then primarily as the head of the druids and not as head of state.

Turalyon is leading Stormwind in Anduin's absence.

Genn Greymane still represents Gilneas.

Council of Three Hammers is 2:1 male:female

Mekkatorque still leads the Gnomes

Velen still leads the Draenei

Tushui Pandaren by Aysa Cloudsinger

Jaina inherited Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras from her mother, who took over after Daelin died during WC3:TFT

Ren'dorei are jointly led by Alleria and Umbric

Lightforged are jointly led by Turalyon and Fareeya

Mechagnomes by Prince Erazmin

Thrall - Orcs of Durotar, Garrosh during Cata/MOP

Rokhan - Darkspear Trolls, previously led by Vol'jin

Baine - Tauren, previously led by Cairne

Forsaken - Desolate Council is 3:2 female:male, previously led by Sylvanas since WC3:TFT

Sin'dorei - Lorthemar Theron, previously Kael'Thas since WC3:TFT

Bilgewater Cartel - Gazlowe, previously Gallywix

Huoshin Pandaren - Ji Firepaw

Shal'dorei - Thalyssra, break away faction of nightborne led by Elisande for past 10,000 years just like Tyrande

Highmountain - Mayla, inherited due to pre-Legion death of father

Zandalari - Talanji inherited from father after death at hands of Alliance

Vulpera - Kiro

Mag'har - Geyarah, Thrall's alternate timeline female version, basically a what-if that escaped a collapsing timeline

TL;DR - You're a putz

That's not even relevant here.    Tyrande has been the leader for millennia.   Malfurion iirc only leads the druids, and has been spending most of his time in the emerald dream for a while.     Doing this "writing him out of the story" bit makes no sense except yet another middle finger to night elf lore.

Big Male Lore Characters that have died (Not including antagonists)

Rhonin

Krasus

Tirion

Varok

Both Black Hands

Medivh

Durotan

Ner'zhul  (briefly used in SL)

Garrosh (briefly used in SL)

Vol'jin (briefly used in SL)

Arthas (briefly used in SL)

Varian

Ursoc (Became Eggsoc for 5 seconds)

Malygos

Cairne

Alt Velen

King Rastakahn

Big Female Lore Characters that have died

Onyxia (Over 17 years ago)

Aegwynn (Death not even in game)

To add to this, the vast majority of negatively represented characters used as villains are male.

Just as a bonus, I find it funny Draka is in Shadowlands and Durotan isn't, i'm not including characters which are active in Shadowlands in this list.

TL;DR Try not to only address half a message, 'must remove men...'

must remove men, only women, must adhere to message.

Reddit user Bonelord911 tried to organize all specializations by their alignment to the cosmology chart and here's the result!
There's just one slight inconsistency as ItisCaleb and Evonyte pointed out. Monks should be at Spirit, close to reality, since the Chi is a Spirit element according to the Chronicles.
