Raid System Adjustments in Wrath Classic

Recommended Posts

To reduce the downtime between boss pulls during progression, long cooldowns will refresh after a raid encounter ends in Wrath Classic.

We’ve been working on getting the raids in Wrath of the Lich King Classic ready in these past weeks and wanted to touch on a few systemic adjustments we plan to make to raids in Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

Buff “Audit” System

One interesting quirk of the Original Wrath of the Lich King Dual Spec system was that certain buffs could be gained or snapshotted at a larger magnitude in one specialization and then in some situations retained after swapping talents to a second saved spec. While in many cases authentic, this has been pointed out to us as a bug multiple times during Beta and we agree that this undoubtedly would have been something we would have tried to fix in 2009. As a result, we are implementing a system that checks all talents and abilities at certain times and will clear or reduce the magnitude of buffs that either should not be present in your current group, or are too powerful based on your current specialization. This is very complicated under the hood, but the general effect is that players can no longer expect to snapshot more powerful buffs when swapping specs around before an encounter, or retaining buffs that their raid group should otherwise not have access to in its current composition. One specific thing to call out with this fix though is this will not interfere with interactions such as buff “high-fives” that happen when, say, a mage and a priest pass each other on the road and give each other Arcane Intellect and Power Word: Fortitude respectively. Single target buffs that don’t require players to be in a group with each other will be unaffected outside of instances to preserve these uniquely Classic interactions.

Long Cooldowns

One of the more arduous things that we’ve gotten feedback on–and indeed many members of our team experienced ourselves during progression in raids such as Sunwell Plateau–was dealing with long cooldowns on certain abilities after wipes. In situations where a wipe would occur early in a fight such as Mu’ru, many raids would often find themselves waiting around for several minutes for buffs such as Bloodlust or Heroism to come off cooldown so it was available for the next attempt. This didn’t feel particularly engaging and could have a very negative effect on motivation and morale during progression raid nights. In later versions of World of Warcraft, this problem was solved with a system that allows long CDs to refresh after an encounter ends, and while we want to take care about any modern features and systems we include in WoW Classic, we also recognize that there’s very little value in having to wait for multiple minutes after your raid has resurrected, run back, and is fully buffed for an arbitrary cooldown on abilities to be confident that you can perform properly. As a result we are going to be implementing a similar system in Wrath of the Lich King Classic where class abilities with a base cooldown of 2 minutes or more (with some exceptions, such as Reincarnation, Ritual of Doom, Astral Recall, and Lay on Hands) will reset when an encounter ends. This is a fairly big change for Wrath Classic, and we didn’t make it lightly, but the downtime between boss pulls during progression can be significant even without considering cooldowns, so this feels like a solid improvement to overall flow and time management within raids.

Along with the adjustment above, we are also going to be implementing a complementary system where the Exhaustion and Sated debuffs caused by Heroism and Bloodlust will persist through death, but then will clear when the encounter ends along with the cooldown on the ability itself. This largely feels like it make sense as part of the adjustment above, and also prevents degenerate behavior where players may intentionally die to clear Exhaustion/Sated and benefit from multiple Heroism or Bloodlust buffs in a single encounter.

We hope you like these adjustments and as always, thank you so much for the feedback you’ve provided on these and other issues during the Wrath of the Lich King Classic Beta!

Honor gear vendor costs have been reduced by 30%. This includes Deadly, Hateful, and Savage gear. The breath meter has been increased to 3 minutes (was previously 1 minute). Death Knight’s Improved Unholy Presence now correctly reduces rune cooldowns when in Unholy Presence. Druid Lifebloom should now correctly scale with Haste when Gift of the Earthmother is talented. Flag carriers in the Warsong Gulch battleground now appear on the map after 45 seconds of carrying the enemy flag. The Wintergrasp auto-queue when entering the zone is now much quicker. Fixed an issue with “The Flesh Giant Champion” where Margrave Dhakar could become permanently stuck if other hostile creatures were pulled into the event area. Incomplete quests will now appear with a gray ‘?’ in gossip windows. Fixed an issue where Culling of Stratholme was not giving tank and healer Northern Adventuring Supplies upon completion. Fixed an issue where players would sometimes not receive Northern Adventuring Supplies if a pet performed the killing blow to the final boss in the dungeon. Friendly, neutral, and enemies tracked on the minimap are now distinguished by color.

Updated Random Battleground rewards to the correct Honor values. The Blessings gained from freeing Webbed Cruaders in the Valley of Echoes, and the Greater Blessing of Might, Prayer of Fortitude, and Battle Shout gained from freeing prisoners during the quest Prisoners of Wyrmskull, are now removed if a player logs out, enters an instance, or travels to another continent. Band of the Kirin Tor, Ring of the Kirin Tor, Signet of the Kirin Tor, and Loop of the Kirin Tor can now be fully refunded at vendors within 2 hours of purchase; similar to the upgraded tiers of these rings. Fixed an issue where some multi-rank talents would not function correctly after changing zones.

Blizzard have announced that Honor gear will be discounted starting this week, due to the very fast honor players were able to get with certain (Wintergrasp-y) activities that have since been shut down, so now payers that leveled more slowly and were not able to take advantage of those will also be able to catch up.

With the first Arena season starting this week, we are reducing the cost of Honor gear by 30%.
During the first week of the expansion there were some very profitable ways of earning Honor which have been resolved. With this change, players who are reaching level 80 this week will be able to acquire Deadly, Hateful, and Savage gear a bit more quickly, to prepare for Arena play.
This update is coming via hotfix soon.

The Battle for Wintergrasp may now only be joined once per 30-minute queue window. The follow player functionality is now disabled in battlegrounds and arenas. Fixed an issue where the player’s name would occasionally appear as “Unknown” in quest descriptions. Fixed an issue where a disconnect could occur when dismounting a flying mount while ascending. "Blinding the Eyes in the Sky" quest: With a recent hotfix, the Skybreaker Recon Fighters should now be present on this quest. "The Storm King's Vengeance" quest: Storm Clouds should no longer fail to buff Gymer when grabbed on “Storm King’s Vengeance”.

Blizzard have detailed a hotfix that addressed the bugged Battle for Undercity quest by adding a bronze dragonflight NPC that can manually toggle the quest phase, and have also reset the progress for players at a certain stage of the quest line.
      Quest Fix (Source)
Just wanted to follow up on this with an update. As of 4:48 p.m. PDT we’ve deployed a hotfix that will add a member of the Bronze Dragonflight “Zidormi” to Tirisfal Glades near the entrance of the Ruins of Loardaeron (for Horde players) or the entrance to the Undercity Sewers (for the Alliance players) that will allow you to manually enable or disable the quest phase that you are placed in for the “The Battle for the Undercity” quest and event.
Horde – Near the entrance to the Ruins of Lordaeron:

Alliance – Near the entrance to Undercity Sewers:

Additionally, when this hotfix was pushed, it will have reset the phase state for all players that are currently on The Battle for the Undercity quest phase. What this means is if you had completed either “Darkness Stirs” (horde) or “Return to Angrathar” (Alliance) or were on any of the ensuing quests up to and including the “The Battle for the Undercity”, you will be restored to the default phase to see the Undercity, Orgrimmar, and the Throne rooms of both Orgrimmar and Stormwind as if you had never started either of those quest chains.
Here’s a full list of the affected quests:
      • Darkness Stirs
      • Herald of War
      • A Life without Regret
      • The Battle for the Undercity
      • Return to Angrathar
      • Reborn from the Ashes
      • Fate, Up Against Your Will
      • A Royal Coup
      • Killing Time
      • The Battle for the Undercity
Again, if you were actively in-progress for any of these quests, you may need to travel to the Tirisfal Glades and speak with Zidormi to return to the correct phase and resume progress on them either now or at a later time when we are able to implement a full fix for the issues that cause the battle to become stuck. Abandoning and re-accepting these quests will not put you back into the correct phase to see the battle-related events.
This should heal situations where players were “stuck” in the Battle for the Undercity phase and could not interact with vendors or trainers in Orgrimmar or Undercity. The goal with this hotfix was to get players stuck in this phase out of it and skip past this event. We will be doing additional work over the coming days and weeks to further harden the Battle for the Undercity event to make it able to be more consistently completed so that players can get the powerful rewards from this quest more reliably.
We again offer our sincere apologies for these issues, and hope to continue working towards a more complete solution to these issues.
